I think we are going to see the 450 and the 250 get to within just a couple of lbs of each other

the 2020 Yamaha YZ250F is only 233.9 and the 2020 YZ 450F is 244.9. that is just 11 lbs off already. I think they are just going to keep getting lighter. In comparison the wet weight of a 2 stroke YZ 250 is 227lbs.

Whoa, Sweet! Is that a '21?
My Son is trying to buy one out West and cannot find a 2021 YZ250F. He was told it would be December.

Thanks! It is a ‘21. This monster edition came in last week so I snatched it up quickly....wasn’t necessarily looking for the monster edition, but it’s all I could find so i splurged. They said they wouldn’t get another 250f til Dec/Jan.

My first time on a dirtbike was a couple years ago. It was an RMZ450. I had never ridden a motorcycle of any kind at that point. I by no means expected it to be easy or to be comfortable on it in any way, but I didn't expect it to be so big and heavy. On TV they look light and easy to manipulate. It always seemed like those guys just manhandled the things into doing what they wanted, but I found out pretty quickly that when you ride a dirtbike you RIDE it. You don't make it do what you want. You convince it to do it and let you come along for the ride. You just point it in the right direction and use mostly your body position to finesse it or balance it out. In my opinion, to see people jumping them, or coming out of holes like that with something that cumbersome is an art form and an exhaustingly difficult physical experience. After the two times I've been on a bike like that, it was pretty obvious why dirtbikes are mostly a young man's activity.

I've ridden twice, and my friend with the bike moved away. I still very much would like to get one and do some trail riding when the time is right. I'm 41 so maybe it's a bit late to get into something like that, but I think riding a motorcycle is an essential life skill.

Professional motocross riders are about the most fit athletes in any sport. Some say they are the fittest. Most can't wrap their head around that and think, "oh it's got a motor and is easy". Nope, probably the most physically demanding sport you can do on a professional level. YMMV.

Definitely not too late. Find a cheap used crf230 or something comparable. An entry level bike will help you get comfortable and confident. It will be slow and the suspension will suck, but if you can fit it in your budget a learner is a good move in my opinion. If you like the sport and want to move up, get a bike that suits your needs. Sell the learner, you may only lose a couple bucks.

I wouldn't argue with that for a second. Just in that short time it was obvious to me how physically demanding it is. Just the little things like impact on the wrists and the grip and all, not to mention arms, legs and back. My friend is a very experienced sport bike rider and was getting more comfortable on the RMZ, but one slip-up where he came off the ground just a tiny bit sent him out of control just enough that he grazed a tree and snapped his shin bone. Just was taking it for a quick spin around the yard and wasn't wearing his boots. Four months in a cast from toes to mid thigh. He got back on there, but never again without wearing every piece of his gear.

That's exactly the bike I was looking at when I first got interested. We just sold our house and the new one will have a garage and even a place I can ride back and forth some when the time comes. The mortgage just went up 50% though..haha. My wife wants a side-by-side so maybe I'll work a used bike into the deal. We have a really nice offroad park nearby, and someone even built a motorcross track at the fairgrounds. Benefits of living in rural america.

Definitely not too old. My 12 year old son has been riding a few years, getting more serious in the sport by the day. He entered his first MX race this summer and he’s bit by the bug...bad. I’m 44 and never ridden until this past spring, but I got tired of taking him to tracks and twiddling my thumbs. So, I picked up a KTM 125 to “play around on”. I ended up riding that thing a ton this summer, all MX track stuff, no trails. Sure, I was bucked off a few times and usually wake up sore after a day of riding, but I love it. Sure wish I’d have picked up the sport 20-30 yrs ago. If you start slow, you’ll be fine. You just need to decide what kind of riding you want to do...trail vs Mx and match the bike to the application.

Congrats on the new house. Rural America rocks. If the wife has any interest, it can be a learner for both of you, maybe a keeper for her.

I just spent the day at a track in the country. Took it easy, didn't break anything... All in all, a good day!
