Diff service

I have read all the posts on doing the Diff service and it looks pretty straight forward. My question is, is this fairly easy to do? I do my own oil but I’m a bit nervous doing this for some reason. Thanks

 

Don't be nervous, lots of vids on YouTube will guide you right through it if you need help. I think the most important part is using the right gear oil, and making sure you can remove the filler plugs before you attempt to drain the oil. Good luck.

 

Yes, it's as easy as you think it is. I use 85W-140 in the rear because I spend large amounts of time in hot environments. Unless you forget to put oil in it you'll be fine.

 

Easy peasy. You'll want the truck level. Make sure you get the fill plug out BEFORE you pull the drain plug. Reusing the crush washers is fine. And get the ole summer pool nose plug---used gear oil is worse than fresh horse shit.

 

As stated above, this is way simpler than an oil change. I did change out the crush washers for peace of mind. They are like $1 at the dealer. The front is a little more difficult to access but still super simple. One of the from plugs takes a copper washer if I recal correctly. (Assuming you’re 4WD)

Yes it's super easy. I also replace my crush washers.

 

You can order the crush washers off Amazon, way cheaper. just make sure you have correct part number. it's very easy, just get a decent fluid transfer pump to fill the diffs. and make sure you're using correct oil for the t-case (75w). ravenol (about $20) or OEM (about $80) per bottle. you'll need two for t-case. I think about 5-6 bottles of the diff fluid for both diffs.

 

As stated, before you drain, make sure you can remove filler plugs.
If you can change your oil, you can change diff fluid. It's a cinch.

To help you out a bit:

Rear diff drain/fill plug 36 ft. lbs. torque
Front diff drain/fill plug 29 ft. lbs. torque
Front differential -

75w-90 - 2.2qt (2.08L)
Rear differential - 75w-90 - 3.8qt (3.59L)
I used Ravenol J1C1109 SAE 75W-90 Gear Oil.

And should you decide to do the transfer case fluid as well (same change interval as diffs & extremely easy, too):

Transfer case 27 ft. lbs. torque
75w - 1.6qt (1.51L)
I used Ravenol J1C1003 SAE 75W Manual Transmission Fluid

Seriously, this fluid change is a piece of cake as is the transfer case. I think the diff change is easier than doing the oil actually...
No skid plate to remove. (Rear)

Get a Allen wrench with 3/8" or 1/2" socket fitting for the front. Make sure it is fully seated before trying to loosen.

 

FIRST, MAKE SURE that you LOOSEN the FILLER PLUG BEFORE removing the drain plugs.And all of them are crazy tight.Other than that its a fairly easy job.Front is just tight on space especially if your doing it in your driveway on your back. Just did mine last weekend.

Did mine at 30k, washers still looked new so I won’t replace them until next time. Will probably replace my rear diff fill plug next time as well, it got a little bit stripped as it’s quite shallow.

I just did mine over the weekend. Kinda disappointing / relieved at the same time.
All the fluid I drained out was clear and looked new. Drain plugs were sludge-y with micro shavings , but the oil looked great.

75W-90 in all three and drove around the hood , then on the lawn in 4wd.
Did the oil change too.

Has any one used this? it it any easier to fill?

 

Works awesome for the rear diff.....front diff not so much..pain in the ass to get it in the right spot without spilling

Same. 75w90 synthetic in both diffs and the transfer case

 

Just serviced mine about two weeks ago. Simple to do.

 

Mobil Delvac 1 75w90 front and rear and Toyota 75W in T case.That 75W is like water compared to 75-90.Front was very clean ,rear was dark and t case looked like new.Its done for a long time now.

 

How many miles on it when you changed the fluids? I did front and rear diffs at 34k and had the same experience re fluid color. I didn't do the T case because 1) cost and 2)I'm still waiting for someone to say they changed it and it didn't look perfect.

 

I used these on my truck. I get things at cost if you ever need anything.
