I just pull my tranny dipstick on my 2000. So many things simpler and better in the early Tundra days!

to be fair if you somehow don’t notice the oil which has a dipstick is about 4 quarts over…..

Yeah, had OP checked the oil after the oil change, probably would have noticed the overfilled oil. Could have deduced the mistake prior to driving.

This is what I did wrong. I did a spill and fill, and didn't check real well when I refilled. My first gear was acting very strange, then just disappeared. After adding more and cycling through the gears while checking fluid levels it came back. Granted I'm a lowly 4spd but it may have some bearing on the situation.

Yeah, hydraulic system at play, both with power steering and with transmissions. You really HAVE to cycle the fluid thru to push air bubbles and such around. With power steering, you cycle lock-to-lock a few times with the wheels in the air to help push air bubbles thru the system, and free them up into the reservoir. With transmission, you shift through the gears to help push fluid thru all the passages to help just the same, shifting from P to 1st or 2nd gear, back and forth a few times.

Granted, it's not always the solve. But a transmission uses hydraulic fluid just like brakes and power steering. It will fail to function properly if there's air anywhere in the system. Do I think it's causing his D-solenoind issue, or missing gear? Possibly. It could also be too-little fluid, if he's not following the procedure correctly, at least getting in the ballpark. Or it could be he's totally fucked that solenoid, but I'm having a hard time believing it if it was truly only a block of driving.
