Looking at buying the DiamondBack HD tonneau cover for my 25' Tundra 1794.

For those that own the HD, can anyone tell me what the added height at the tailgate is with the cover on?

I’m guessing + 3-4” but trying to find out exactly if I can (DB site doesn’t seem to list the height) as I am putting in some shelving in my garage but will need to of course place the shelf higher than what the truck bed and cover are.

    Thanks all!

EDIT/UPDATE to my own question: per a DiamondBack customer experience manager: Thanks for reaching out! The DiamondBack has a 2" profile.

I measure over 4” from the bed rail, including the latch/lock assembly.

the thickness of the metal cover may be 2”, but once you add the gasket and latch, it’s well over 2”.

As Bulldog 6 is saying... It is just under 4" with the latch. You wont find a better cover. 4 years now on my PRO.... not 1 issue.

Thank you both! Appreciate the help and the measurement pic!

I put in a floating shelf across the back of my garage wall where the Tundra will be parked (backed in) and made sure to leave some extra wiggle room just in case.

    thanks again all!

I'm purchasing a Diamondback cover for my 22 tundra and will be installing a rack that attaches to the cleats. I'm having the factory install the cleats and am wondering if anyone can tell me the distance between the side cleats front to back. Total distance as well as the distance between each cleat. Thanks in advance!

Is your truck bed 5.5’ or 6.5’?

    Hello Forum,
I have a 2016 Tundra Quicksand TRD Pro and just picked up a used Diamondback SE for a Gen 2.5 Tundra.
It was cheap ($450), but needs some TLC.
I believe it was originally shiny aluminum, then painted flat black.

I plan on using Raptor bed liner to coat it (after proper prep...).
Anyone know how the standard Black Raptor bed liner will match my TRD Pro Black trim?
Per the Raptor website, the gloss level of Black Raptor is approximately 10 gloss units, or a satin finish.

Anyone color match their Diamondback Bed Cover?
If so, can you post or send me a picture of the Cover on your Tundra.
It would add about $100 to the project cost, but if it's going to look awesome color matched, then it would be $100 well spent.

    Thank you.
    Tom

I cant help with the Raptor bed liner question.
I think the color matched comes down to personal preference, however the raptor lining may be more durable than just a painted cover.
I attached a couple examples of color matched tonneau covers that may be able to help you make your decision.

    Thank you for the pics.
I forgot that those 1 piece fiberglass covers are typically color matched.
I'm thinking black would look better...

Loaded up to take the family 4+dog to the campground for summer vaca. Last year we had a 4R with a hitch carrier and a Yakima skybox on top and it was playing Tetris to get it all in there.
Much simpler this year with the Crewmax, DB and a few bins strapped to the top.
Looked like the Klampits but load didn’t budge on the 300 mile trip and we had plenty of space for a load of groceries in the bed when we got close.
Still in the honeymoon phase but really enjoying the DB SE so far.
Hoping I can score a rack system down the line for that skybox and a kayak next trip.

    Hi all!

I have a couple of questions for 3rd gen owners with the HD and the 6.5 foot bed.

Would it be possible to slide the cover an inch or two rearwards? Would the tailgate still open? And would the locking rods still be in the rails?

I really want to have an independent headache rack so that when I remove the front panel or if I remove the cover, I still have the headache rack mounted to the truck to strap stuff like propane tanks, 45 gallons drum, etc. I came up with my own, but it’s made out of wood and is extremely heavy and ressembles more a sled deck than a cover.

    Thank you very much!

I think you could move the HD cover back and the rods are forward enough that they would still hit the side rails.

When I had my cover on the Tundra. I would release the lever and push the rear of the cover up a bit (just enough to clear the gasket) when closing the tailgate. Then re-latch the lever. I would do this with the tent and racks still attached to the cover. If you can do this with your quad on the back, then I would say that it could work.

Another thing to consider is when you pull the cover back you will eventually move the leading edge of the cover off the seal at the front of the bed. I think you might not have 2" before this happens (maybe 1" if that).

    Thank you for your response.

Yes I will need to bolt on a metal L to the tundra front track to make the front of the cover rest on something. As for the tailgate, I’m thinking of a scenario where I have something really heavy on it, like an ATV, the would prevent me from opening the rear panel a bit to let it close.

Toyota Online Parts has the 20% off sale until tomorrow 1/20. You can get the Diamondback HD for 20% off directly from Toyota with pickup location at a participating dealer. I plan to get one.... just have been waiting for the right price.

I installed my cover on Friday. A little cumbersome when alone but not too bad.
Does anybody go through the carwash with the cleats on or do the places not let you in with them?

I’ve been through some. Nobody has said anything but from one place (Tommy’s Express) I have pulled off the strips of cloth that they use with my cleats on my DB HD. Thank goodness they were Velcro - so they just detached themselves :)

Did you put a seal by the tailgate? My Dback HD is on order. I am researching seals to put on the back where the tailgate closes.

This is how I plan to do my future camping. On one hand, I want to get waterproof/durable totes and cooler to put on top. However, I don't want to get too nice of stuff in case of theft.

Alright so I was able to make a diamondback fit while retaining a permanent and separate headache rack!

I ordered a diamondback HD for a 2019+ Ram 1500 with a 6.4 foot bed. This gave me the 3 inches that I needed to move the cover back to allow it to articulate upfront while still allowing me to open the tailgate.

I had to grind the mounting plates for the backrack, the edge of the diamondback mounting clamps, and bolt 2 2x4 to the front track for support. IMG_9463.jpg IMG_9464.jpg IMG_9465.jpg

This is an example of "making it work"! :)

For a longer term solution to the gap in the front, you could fab up an angle (something like a 4"x4" angle) and connect it to the headache rack and 2 sided foam tape to the forward bed. This would replace the wood that is not a great long term solution.

I noticed that the rear cover is sitting a bit high. You can tighten that up by adjusting the latch pins. I used some silicone spray on the ends to help the latch pins slide into the bed rails.

I found that I needed to open the rear cover to close the tailgate and then latch it last. I did this to prevent wear on the rear cover seal over the tailgate.

Interesting idea for the 4x4 attached to the rack. I was thinking of fabbing something up in metal and bolting it again to the rail, but this could be interesting. Thanks!

Yeah the wood was only to see how it fits and how much support it offers when only attached to the rail.

As for the rear of the cover, it has to be the angle I took the picture, I can’t close it right now unless I stand on it lol. I’m trying to compress the seal for the first week or so, but it’s so cold out that I’m not sure it’s working. It’s suppose to go from -30C (-22F) to -5C (23F) for a couple of days so that should help.

Unrelated, but it’s been between -30 to -40 the past 3 weeks and I’m just looking forward to be able to go ice fishing without the holes freezing over in a couple of minutes lol.

I finally put Diamondback HD a few days ago.... have left cover closed to have gaskets seal/conform.

Just have a few questions for DB HD owners:

    1) When you open the tailgate, do you always open the the rear panel first? I am thinking that this makes sense because the constant friction of top edge of tailgate rubbing against rubber seal of rear panel will degrade the rubber seal and lead to leak issues.

    2) I guess Diamondback sells "Toughcoat Renew" to help restore coating on cover. I am curious if any of you have used any products like 303 protectant on the cover for long-term protection for a truck that isn't kept in garage.... just want cover to last as long as my truck.

I do not open the rear hatch to close the tailgate. I juts open and close with the diamondback closed. Might degrade the seal over time (I have replaced it once in like 5 years).

I don’t use any protectant - I juts use the pressure washer with soap and rinse thoroughly
