    I wouldn't want a 1 y/o truck with extensive repair/paint. If I was offered a reasonable financial alternative for a truck I wanted I'd take it.

That said, in order to evaluate the alternative I'd be looking at the real dollars involved between the 2021 and 2022. "Payments about the same" can be less than revealing of the actual cost.

Tell them to give you an allocation of a 22 TRD Pro at MSRP and you keep your truck until it arrives.

Then tell them to give you a Platinum at invoice, you should get something for what you went through.

I like that the dealer is "helping" you. But the only way they would be helping you, is if there is $$$ in it for them. If they give you what you paid for it ( 100% of your otd price right?) they're still going to profit when they sell that for more than they are giving you (given the market for the venerable V8). Then, when they sell you a 22 at full MSRP, they will profit again, but MASSIVELY!!! the ole double dip! Fortunately you have options with this dealership that both Corporate, and the purchased dealership refused to do anything about.
Now it's up to what you actually want as a vehicle. Decide that, THEN negotiate the best you can for what you know you want. Otherwise it's a guessing game and you'll go around in circles and end up with a mistake, a repaired debacle, or an overpriced "only option left" scenario. There's definitely more you can do but if you push the one dealership helping you too far, do you risk losing all options with them? Good luck my friend.

Very helpful perspective. And yes. The dealer makes bank both sides. I have relegated myself to this. They got me out of the problem truck, but it didn’t sting them at all (nor should it). The onus now stands with Toyota. Will they come through? I have a case still open a call and email in and am waiting for a response. I have asked them to help rectify. I suggested 0% financing and some warranty. 2 things that don’t actually cost them on the books in the same way. Unsure if they will even call me back tho.

I would lobby for a loaded SR5 and limited at your current trucks payment and term, just extended starting with the new date. You have been paying for this truck, its been in the shop for how many days total, and its jacked. They lose a little bit, you gain a lot.

the problem is, the dealer is not not he line - they didn't even sell me this 21. the issue truly is on Toyota Canada, not the independent dealership, they have done what they can to help, but to expect them to eat 10-12k in an upgrade is not realistic.

    Just as an update.

I have made the deal and bought a new AWD sienna as well.

the 2022 tundra comes in 3 weeks. Blueprint Sr5 TRD off road. Coming with Full front end 3m and 24inch hood and fenders etc. as well as TRD cast aluminum side steps.

dealer giving me 52,500 for the 21 (same as what I paid out the door) and I am paying msrp (58,700 plus the accessories). My payment goes up by 30$ B/w but I get out of the problem truck. Toyota Canada in good faith has also given a 60 month 120,000 platinum warranty on the new truck (2500msrp) for free as a courtesy for all this.

I am happy with the outcome. Grateful for an upgrade across at low cost. And happy enough to get my wife the new sienna as well.

You made the right decision OP. Non factory body work never holds up the same as factory. Once it’s touched, no matter the quality, it’s never the same IMHO. I walked away from a purchased new/no accident 2 year old 5th gen 4Runner that was severely rusting everywhere. The dealership basically made it where I leased a Corolla “price” 2 years with no over mileage surcharge (47k when they bought it back). Toyota was going to fix it all but it was going to a require a body off frame restoration…and I was like NOPE, NOPE, and NOPE…

I felt a little screwed by Toyota because the truck simply shouldn’t have rusted that badly. But the dealership did very right by me. After seeing the numbers I realized I wouldn’t even been able too lease a bare bone RAV4 for 10k mileage for 3 years for what that 4Runner cost me.

Thanks, and I fully agree, I would have never accepted the repair, I would have just lived with he defect. Though they make another 2 sales, I feel they did very right by me as well. could it have been better? yup, but it also is happening during a worldwide shortage!

    How did this turn out?
I would certainly check not only what this would do to Ur CarFax report but also whether Ur truck would have a salvage title. It probably varies by state, however, sometimes it doesn't take that much work to force a salvage title. A salvage title would trash Ur truck's value.

    Turned out well.
In fact, was able to press the dealer go give me more value on my trade in - and so they agreed to install oem tri fold tonneau and TRD skid plate at no cost to me to keep my trade in coming their way. So between those and the warranty I feel like I finally did well in the ordeal.

crazy world for used. I’m sure they still make bank on it.
