I just had one at my dealer come in with a whining noise. Had no power steering fluid in reservoir. All fluid leaked into the rack boot. Toyota didn't want to take chances and replaced the whole power steering system. Lines, rack, pump, cooler n reservoir. almost 5k in warranty work. Worst part is i ran the guys vin and it is not affected under the recall for the rack. His is a 21 with only 12k on the odometer.

My 21 had a build date of 5/21 and no recall

As far as the recall goes its like a 6 month production span. Warranty pays the tech 9.4 hours to R&R. It is a pain in the A** to pull the rack

I'm hoping Toyota comes up with a rather non invasive method of verifying the offending racks instead of just changing them all. Maybe slide the boot back and borescope the junction of the circlip/groove? I've found my borescope very handy for more than just checking copper fouling.

Dealer had the truck for 4 days. They diagnosed it in a day, then two days to get the part(s), then I think a whole day to fix it.

2000 miles now, and everything seems to be good. Not the most confidence inspiring event when you just dropped $50k on a new vehicle and two days later its on a tow truck.

Don't get me started on Toyota roadside...:frusty:

I think mine might have been one of the early repairs/hold at port victims.

I see you have a 17 Limited. I sold my 15 Limited to Carvana and bought a 21 TRD Pro at MSRP early November. I can't believe the ride difference. My 15 was very clean and low mileage, so the truck was nowhere near worn out. I can't speak to a 22 but I'm really liking the 21, got rid of the excessive chrome and the exhaust note is just right for me. Didn't need a new truck but wanted the last year V8 and I could not turn down the offer on my 15. Not on the recall list BTW.

Yeah really nice...so I got my Pro in my garage...making payments...can't let the wife drive it doubt she could manage the steering when and if it catastrophically fails...
On one hand they tell you it's ok to drive it? then tell you it's pretty risky? and they have no fix but will maybe let us know sometime in January...meanwhile what?

Toyota estimated that 25 percent of the involved vehicles may contain a groove of an incorrect shape in the assembly. The problem resulted from damaged teeth on the cutting tool that shapes the grove. That could create a leak that causes a sudden loss of power steering assist under some driving conditions.

Toyota learned of the problem after seeing an increase in field reports and warranty claims for power steering fluid leaks in late September involving the models. It investigated the problem and found that it appeared in trucks and SUVs assembled in August and September.

The automaker plans to mail letters to customers in late January instructing them to take the vehicles to a dealer. Technicians will replace the power steering gear assembly as necessary, without charge. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at (800) 331-4331 if they have questions. Toyota’s numbers for this recall are 21TB10 and 21TA10.

If there are still 2021 Tundras on dealers lots that can't be released tell me Toyota doesn't have a fix yet. Those will be the first to be fixed. Does rub me the wrong way that the problem is serious enough to halt delivery but not serious enough we are told to park our new trucks.

There replacing racks on the ones they held back on delivery to dealers first , then the new ones on dealer lots
That have a hold on ,think the only fix will be new rack, 1500 miles on mine TRD OR built mid September no issues yet,
most ones I’ve seen on here that went out were less than 1k miles ,

Would be nice to have them worry about those of us who use ours as daily drivers to work and back first rather than unsold ones sitting on lots...either this is dangerous or it is not...according to Toyota
it's a dangerous situation on one hand but not enough to really get on the ball here and take care of customers first...

    IMO

The amount of fluid and associated high volume pumping equipment would surely exceed payload.:)

All joking aside, driving with a dry PS pump can't be good for the system.

I think that's toyotas problem if the person needs to get home, since we supposedly bought a functional truck.

An oil leak may cause a sudden loss of power steering assist, increasing the risk of a crash.

    Summary:
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2021-2022 Sequoia and 2021 Tundra vehicles. The power steering gear assembly may have been manufactured incorrectly, which can result in an oil leak.
    What should you do:
Dealers will inspect and replace the power steering gear assembly as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed January 22, 2022. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's numbers for this recall are 21TB10 and 21TA10.
    For more information:
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.

Toyota Power Steering Recall Includes Sequoia and Tundra
Toyota recalls about 23,000 Sequoia and Tundra vehicles due to leaking power steering fluid.
    By David A. Wood, CarComplaints.com

    Posted in Recalls

November 24, 2021 — A Toyota power steering recall involves 2021 Toyota Tundra and 2021-2022 Toyota Sequoia vehicles to prevent power steering fluid leaks.

The Toyota Sequoia and Tundra recall includes about 22,000 vehicles in the U.S. and about 1,194 vehicles in Canada.

The Tundra and Sequoia vehicles may have manufacturing errors with the power steering gear assemblies that can cause a loss of power steering fluid.

Power steering will be suddenly lost if enough power steering fluid leaks out, but manual steering will remain.

The Toyota steering wheels will become more difficult to turn if power steering fails, a problem that is more dangerous when driving slow speeds.

The Toyota Tundras were built August 5 through October 18, 2021, and the Sequoias were manufactured from July 28 to October 25, 2021.

Model year 2021 Toyota Tundra and 2021-2022 Toyota Sequoia owners will be contacted toward the end of January 2022 about the recall.

Toyota dealerships will inspect and possibly replace the power steering gear assemblies.

Toyota owners with questions should call 800-331-4331 and use recall number 21TB10 or recall number 21TA10.

Remember, only one in four of the vehicles manufactured during the listed timeframe will need steering rack replacement. However all need to be inspected because that’s the only way to find the bad ones. The rest are good to go after the required inspection.

While I agree on principle, it IS your problem when they won't try to get you home, and you're stranded.

"That's between you and the tow truck driver to figure out." - Toyota roadside.

All Toyota cared about was getting my truck to the closest dealership, and not getting me and the wife 35 miles home... where there is a dealer 2 miles from the house. Taking the truck there wasn't "covered" and would be on me out-of-pocket. After 10 minutes of arguing, I hung up and called AAA, who were marginally better. I still had to Uber home.
