I am considering buying a new complete AR and I was wondering if anyone had had any experience with any Daniel Defense rifles. The DDM4 V5 S (14.5" barrel, mid gas system, 12" quad rail) seems to fit my needs the most. It's between that or the Colt LE6940 (16" barrel, carbine gas system, 7" monolithic quad rail), which will fit my needs, but not as much as the DD.

I have a Colt now and I love it, but need a different setup (flat top with no fixed front sight).

I haven't heard a bad thing about DD, I love Colt, but the rail system is limiting on the 6940 as it is one piece with the barrel. If the rail was a bit longer it wouldn't be a problem, but I like spreading the sights out farther and having a bit more room on the hand guard. I don't care about the extra weight.

    Any thoughts?

I can't say anything negative about either.
I have owned DD and know several who have the 6940.
Uncle Sam allowed me to play with his Colts and several others.
You can't go wrong with either....heck just buy both lol.
What are you planning on doing with it?
Jump in the car and come on down...DD is like 10 minutes from here. I'll get us a tour.

Thanks for the response. I wish I could buy both but that's not in the budget. I think I will have a bit more flexibility with the DD, it is the pricier route but I think it will be worth it.

I will be mounting everything from my current setup. Aimpoint PRO on the top, MagPul flip up BUS (if I go with DD), maybe my Sig post/tac light/laser from my current setup or I may find a new, smaller, lighter light setup.
One point sling mount, think that's about it.

I would love a tour haha! It would be quite the drive from PA though!

Also I forgot about Windham weaponry. The guy that owns and runs it used to work for bushmaster before they became shit.

The less that is mounted on the barrel, the better IMO.

I've never heard anything bad about DD, I believe they rank just below colt. I have an LWRC M6A2 and love it. That guns a tank. My only complaint is that it's heavy. Piston setup is nice but adds weight not including the Leupold I put on it.

The DD has a FF barrel. Definitely a plus.

I get cold feet swapping stuff like that, too worried something won't he done right. Which Colt do you mean though? The 6920 and replace the HG with a longer one? The HGs on the 6940 can't be swapped, they are part of the barrel.

I have heard great things about LWRC, but trying to stay with direct gas.

Yep, go with the 9620. You can order the weapon with the lower gas block already installed. They can be had without furniture for about 750.00.

What are the plans for the weapon? Range queen, zombie killer, completion, or grab and go?

    I agree with @TheBeast

Bravo Co. makes some really quality weapons....if you have the coin. I have been looking at some of there parts to add on mine.

@ColoradoTJ Thanks I will have to look into the 6920 with the low gas block, I didn't know that was an option. Without furniture would probably be best, I will have to make another trip to my local gun shop, or a different one, as they didn't make that suggestion.

I guess you can say grab and go.

@TheBeast I will have to check out BCM, thanks.

When you order your weapon, you want the OEM2. This comes without the front sight block. I have the OEM1

Grab and go weapons, in my opinion should be MIL spec, no proprietary parts, easy to swap out parts kind of weapon.

I don't mind the front gas block sight and can be used for other things as well. However, for quick sight acquisition, the further the front and rear sights are the better.

    Some parts to concider:

-Ergo grip. I have never had anyone that has shot or handled my weapon not say something about the grip. It is just so comfortable. I like keeping some lube in the grip as well to ensure I have a wet BCG.

    - get a good muzzle device. Mine is shit and nobody will shoot with me if it is on...and I don't blame them. It works for muzzle lift, but is just so loud.

    - If you want optics, don't go cheap. Nuff said.

This was mine before my horrific boating accident.

I love the idea of the OEM2. I am shocked my local gun shop didn't suggest this, as it totally fits the bill for what I am looking for and what I described to them. You are the man!

I still have a bit of a hard on for the DD, but my wallet would like the OEM2 much better, and I have owned my current Colt for 10 years and I trust it with my life. I never worry about reliability with my Colt, and I would expect the same with the 6920, I just had no idea they offered a low profile gas block. Looks like I would be able to run whatever handgaurds I want out as far forward as I want.

I have to say because I have been out of the AR market for so long, a lot has changed and I haven't been staying up on all the small changes, models, etc. I'm glad I reached out on here!

As far as optics, I have had my Aimpoint PRO for a few years (maybe 5, whenever they came out I picked it up), same deal, reliable, trustworthy, I love it. That will be going on the new rifle unless I keep my old one, then I will be buying a new PRO for the new one.

Looks like I will be checking availability on the OEM2 and pricing and picking my setup in the meantime.

    Vortex optics.

I'd also go with the DD. More battle, less rattle.

I have never had an issue with my Colts either. However, I have had some good friends with high end weapons that wouldn't run.

AimPoint for me as well. Never had an issue with Eotech either.

I have been looking into different light/switch setups. Already made my purchase but still looking at them. Lots of different holds and options based on your hold. Are you running a tape switch? Kinda looks like a tail cap switch, if so, how do you activate it? Slide your hand forward and press it with the front of your hand/knuckle?

Yea, you can click the tail cap with your forehand. I had the tapeswitch, but the coil cord drove me nuts interfering with my grip on the HG, and awkward feeling on the grip as well
