I finally got around to replacing my leaking rack, and opted for an $630 OEM reman straight from the dealership. I should have checked all this more thoroughly before starting the job, but here I am, completely torn down ready for install, and notice the hard lines on the new unit are all dented up. Seems like shipping damage since the paint is chipping off and there are marks on the lines.

Any thoughts on what I should do here? If I go demand a replacement, I'll probably be another week+ out. What are the odds the next one's any better?

Photos of my current lines and the same sections on the new one for comparison:

I guess there's a chance the routing isn't supposed to be identical on the new one but it looks like dents to me.

That's definitely a flow restrictions, and now a new weak point in the line

I'd replace it or see if they have that line in stock and replace just that line on the rebuild.

The kink in the bend area makes it look pretty restrictive, which isn't the base case scenario in a hydro system.

Are any of the lines actually smooshed, other than the narrow sections where the bends are that are already in the rack lines? (I don't think they use mandrel bends)

If no, then I'd send it dude. You have no recourse now anyway.

Flow restrictions in pipes are measured by the foot, meaning that the restriction will only affect that small area. My guess is that you would never notice it driving. If I'm wrong, you can do as BeauDacious suggested.
As far as weak spot is concerned, as long as it wasn't bent back and forth several times, it will likely hold until the next ice age.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I ended up just racing over to the dealership before they closed since I figured showing up all greasy and annoyed would be more useful than a phone call.

I explained the situation and after 15 minutes or so they agreed to expedite me a new one and said it should be here by Friday. It escalated through a few rankings of people over there, but nobody was very argumentative about it.

I was worried about flow restrictions as well, though if I had to guess I'd say there's a good chance it would have functioned normally. Was mostly an issue of splurging for an expensive dealer part only to end up with something that was obviously maimed in shipping.

I'll update this thread when I get the new one and keep some tabs on how it's workin. I know people have had some mixed results with the reman's, it took a lot of research and coin-flipping to go with this option in the first place.

This is exactly why I’m hesitant about ordering a new rack from down South for a 25% discount + free shipping.

I have a new steering rack in my closet that I ordered some years ago during a sale and I never got around to putting it on. Life got busy.

It arrived perfectly fine for me from "down south."
