Double cab is common, so is 4x4, TRD Sport is as well, along with the tow. Mud flaps are an accessory that is easy to choose. What color was it? How big was the dealership you bought from? Unless it was a rare or low volume color, I'd bet money that it was an allotment that happened to fit and they just tailored the accessories.

The dealership matters a lot. A local dealership would sell me any they had coming and let me choose accessories if they were still in that stage, but they couldn't promise a Pro in Solar Octane. Low volume dealer. So I wound up going with a Texas dealership that is higher volume, because they knew they'd get the Pro in the color and transmission I wanted. Then I just told them the accessories I wanted and what ones I didn't want. It worked just like a custom order, except that I had to travel for it.

Yeah, preselling an allotment is always good for a dealership. The fact that he's talking about allotments shows that it's not a special order. They had a silver sport 4x4 allotted and you wanted that truck. Worked for both, but it wasn't a custom order.

Yeah, but that's not Toyota doing it. That's the Dealerships and the systems. Dealerships are are privately owned and generally sleazy, regardless of brand. Or, if the laws that prevent direct to customer selling of vehicles were changed, we could all kiss the dealership model good bye.

The guys in this video are idiots saying that it's Toyota inventing new stuff. That's all the dealerships, not the manufacturer.

You can't custom order vehicles from the factory.

allocation reserve request is the same thing as ordering a specific configuration. all it does is when a specific configuration is built, then its allocated to a dealer/customer reserve request.

your definition of custom order by toyota is if an option is selectable it can be ordered via a reserve request. what you see on the toyota website is pretty much all the packages/options you can select in the reserve request for that model/trim. i am guessing you havent even looked at the reserve request screen to see what you can actually select for a mode/trim.

i am going to guess you havent even gone to my old post, so i am just going to repost my printout from the dealerdaily allocation reserve request screen.

now this only applied to a platinum 2022-2023. the 2024 will have another factory package to select call the TRD OR package since it will be new for 2024.

this was my allocation reserve request on our 2022, but since it took forever it was pushed to 2023 model year.

its to streamline building vehicles. if you have to only build 40-50 different configs and then customer only has to pick from them its easier. if you have to randomly build 100-150+ different odd ball configs (big 3), there is more room for errors either in production or software bugs.

just to add to my other pic post. i worked with my toyota sales manager to select which option(s) on the dealerdaily screen i wanted. so all those check boxes i asked to be checked on the screen. normal salespeople do not have access to this screen, you have to find someone higher up the chain and have a relationship with them that they will let you have knowledge or access to these screen.

trust me 99% of dealers will not let your average customer even know you can do this or let you even see these screens.

edit: i blanked out personal info and dealer info to protect parties.

That's why my default choice will likely end up being a custom ordered 2024 F150 4x4 Platinum SuperCrew 6.5 ft bed. In the past, we've custom ordered our BMWs and waited 3-6 months for delivery. We're simply not going to accept not getting exactly what we want for a $50+k purchase.

Also, once you're on a platform (ie. Ford), it steers subsequent purchases. For example, we liked the 2023 Ford Expedition Max Limited that we had for about a week as a rental and that will likely follow our F150 purchase after 2-3 years.

I mentioned Toyo and old IT as evidenced by the 2 day shutdown of Japanese production and likely the source of them bring unable to do custom orders. Winner winner chicken dinner. The prod problem they deleted some data by accident and the database restore filled all available disk space taking systems down. So they are legacy hosted and not in the cloud = old IT. Company was also running production and COOP (backup application instance) on the same server which is stupid IT. They lack the IT infrastructure to do custom orders if their NA ops is like the mother country

I have waited for 7 months for a 23 lunar rock limited. In July I was told the dealer I am going through they had one on allocation. It is currently for some reason and built in San Antonio. I have the Vin pre it being built. Would like to know the status. They say it and 800 other 2023 are there waiting but don't know the details.

    Ahhhh.

I think I posted about this on another thread but I had a similar experience. I've ordered (and received as ordered) multiple 911s and a couple Boxsters over the years, so when my local dealer told me he had "an allocation", we agreed on a trade value for my '08 Tundra purchased new there (at MSRP) and I "ordered" a Lunar Rock Premium with TRD, tow mirrors and bed step.

A couple weeks later he told me the truck was being built that week - white with a 3" factory lift. I would say I wasted a month of my time (and maybe I did) but the Smoked Mesquite 1794 with TRD and tow mirrors didn't arrive at the dealer I found it at until a day or two before I bought it over the phone. It had some fluff I would never "order" (terrible and overpriced factory PPF, chrome BS, etc) but I was willing to get $1K of stuff I didn't want to be done with the process. I like colors a lot of people don't and I think that is one lovely brown. Actually much prefer it to the Lunar Rock but was planning on getting a Premium at first as I thought (and think) the 1794 logos are a bit much.

I guess there's no way to figure out what if any lost opportunity this bizarre process creates, but if custom orders lost money, Porsche wouldn't offer it. I believe they are the most profitable car company in the world.

the video missed the 4th contributor to this “delima” and that’s the consumer that actually pays the asking price.

honestly since Covid, dealerships are now exposed as not needed. They were simply “ordering” a car off the internet. Something anyone can do.

time to abolish the dealership model.

The auto group/dealership lobby is still dug in way too deep at the state government level in many places. Good luck with any changes in the “dealership” model any time soon

Never say never. Covid happened and the world changed. At least in the past the dealers had millions of dollars of inventory. You could test drive, check out features, colors, etc. cost of doing business.

my recent tundra purchase there was absolutely zero value added from the dealer. None. Things can and will change.

I did the same thing the OP did and went to several dealers and called others. I wanted a Limited in a certain color with JBL, PVM, and a couple of dealer options. I was told by most that Toyota doesn't manufacture a Limited without a sunroof or JBL even though you can figure one online. I was also told because of the back ordered no dealer will sell without catalytic theft protection. At the time 3 months if for the 4 catalytic converts the 2023s have.

So fricken dumb, but I got what I wanted except with a sunroof and I got it 6 months ago at MRSP minus 1000 and zero pressure for stuff. But it was a lot of work to track one down. In the end I spent I think 3500 more than I wanted because of the sunroof. But I got 6000 more using Craigslist. I spent the months it took finding a 2023 getting my 2016 ready to sell. Had they had one on the lot I would lost 6000 trading it in. So overall pretty pleased about the upgrade.

Is there anyone here if I gave them a pre production VIN could find out what the new vin is and know the status of it?

    Many Thanks!
