My kids are 3 and 6 now. They are a little cramped back there with car sears. Infant seats SUCKED with a DC. I wouldn’t do it again if i could.

The door is almost more of a choke point than the legroom. Not easy to get kids in or out

We completed a trip to Wyoming with a family of 4 - the two lads coming in at 6'1" and 6'3". Probably 25 total hours of driving over a week and the CM was key for success. Honestly, they could shorten the CM by an inch or two and give it back to the bed and it'd still be fine - it's actually probably too much room.

I have had both and the crew max is my vote. And the back window rolls down can’t beat it.

Just arrived in Angel Fire, NM from DFW, TX with my CM. Wife up front with me and 3 girls ages 11 - 7 in the back. No complaints. Didn’t want to put the miles in my wife’s 3 row Acadia. 2 big coolers and 3 totes with luggage in the bed, plenty of room for girls with phones / DVD players and bags of crafts (that immediately go all I’ve the back seat). Love my CM.

Foot well led's, and interior LED buld replacement. (warm) Broke the front shock of the 3" spacer lift, so replaced with 6112/5160 and 1' block rear. KO 2's. Speaker replacement, added amp and (2) 10's under seat. Weathertech floor mats. Salex organizers. Ziebart undercoating. RCI front, transmission/diff, and gas tank skids received, waiting for spring install. Compustar remote starter. front/rear dash cam.
I have a DC. Get a CM. DC is just a better extended cab. The rear passenger room, and roll down rear window are nice.

Get the crewmax. You won't regret it. Everytime someone asks for an opinion about towing, the first thing people yell out is "YOU NEED THE 5.7L GET THE 5.7L". The funny thing is the guy only wants to tow a row boat but they still yelling 5.7L . When it comes to room for family Crewmax all day. No such thing as "oh one has complained riding 2hr+ in my truck". Most people won't complain but wishing they could stretch their legs.

I've had both and would say that the Crewmax would be a better choice for two teenage boys. Your family will appreciate the extra room. My wife loves how the back window rolls down.

Two teenage boys of my own - one already a big farm boy (6’4” / 240lbs) the other still lanky but just keeps growing and filling out... he’s coming up on 6’ / 180 quickly and I’m sure he will end up 6’3” or 6’4” too. I couldn’t imagine life without the CM. The wife loves her 4 Runner and so do I but we literally never even think about driving it anywhere if we need a back seat. My older son, even at 6’4” can stretch his legs out almost straight without his feet touching the front seat. It’s the best gift you’ll ever give your kids, your wife and yourself IMO.

I think a lot of you guys in the front like sliding the seat all the way back to where you can barely reach the pedals.

That sounds like a comment for a short person. There are people that are over 6 feet tall such as myself that need to slide the seat back so keep your booster seat in there guy.

No friend. Ive been a lot cars with people shorter than me and very often I have to reach out far for the pedals and steering wheel. I'm 6ft btw.

I love the sheet metal on the DC; it's what got me looking at the truck to begin with. Those rear doors are a classic look compared to other offerings.

.....then I discovered the rolldown rear window with the sunroof..........Crewmax all the way.

    Agreed.

Maybe you have short legs? I have to slide my seat all the way back in every vehicle that I am in - I have yet to find one where I don't have to. I'm a bit out of the ordinary on the height scale, though. So, if you are in a car behind me - sucks to be you. Unless we are in the CrewMax. Still plenty of legroom behind me in the CrewMax.

Everyone will try to convince you that their setup is the best. Including myself. I’ve had both, CM for 75k miles, and now a DC for 30k miles. Both are great trucks, both have ample room, but in different areas obviously. I have three sons, all very tall. 6’+. Personally I was not a fan of the CM. Sure the cab was huge, but the bed was stupid. Also the CM is a heavier truck, something to consider if you live in the mountains. The DC does feel more spry on twisty roads and more composed on 4x4 roads. I’m personally much happier with the DC. My kids are plenty comfortable.

If it’s important to you, DC has better Crash safety ratings than the CM...and I think better towing capacity.

I’ve had an assortment of tundra cabs

    05 DC
    10 DC
    17 CMAX

The 05 was a mini CMAX with the sliding rear window and ample leg room.

The 10 DC was great as a single guy and newly married.

17 CMAX fits the bill. Hauls all the people, to all the places, with everyone’s things.

You can get more utility out of a 5.5 foot bed using a bed extender but you can never extend the cab. On a road trip people can sit in the back and my wife can recline her seat and slide it back far enough to cross her legs in front of her. You can't truly appreciate the Crewmax until you've done a marathon road trip with full sized adults or car seats in the back. And I can haul sheetrock or 8 feet worth of 2x4 just fine. For sheet rock I fold out the bed extender then but a piece of plywood down, then stack the sheetrock over that so the bed extender posts don't damage it. The extra comfort to my family easily outweighs being able to brag that I can close the tailgate the handful of times while I own the truck that I will ever transport anything 8 feet long.

CM all the way. I sat in the back during our test drive, I didn't care for how small the back window (door) was. And no doubt for long drives and travel, the CM has WAY more room!
