Very nice! When I first saw the pic and all the blanks to the right I was surprised you didn't go with the 12 spot fuse block. But it all makes sense after reading your plans. It's a lot of work to do what you are doing but it looks like it's gonna be so worth it.

ok, so, everything is in. obviously there is some clean up that needs to happen. i'll get to that tomorrow along with getting the switches and sockets wired. the empty switch on top will power 2 USB ports and 2 12v sockets. one of the bottom switches will turn on the LED strips in the bed and the other will turn on the camp lights that will be mounted on the rack.

i do need to shorten the red cable going from the mppt to the circuit breaker. also need some velcro to secure the solar panel cables coming through the roof.

    couple of things.

first, the little hex nut on the negative battery terminal is somehow stripped so i can't get it tight on the post. no idea how that happened but new terminals have been ordered. so the truck is going to sit for a bit longer as i wouldn't want the negative terminal coming off and bouncing off the engine as i was driving. would probably be bad.

second, the xfaktr dual battery setup now annoys the f*** out of me but, i'm going to have to make it work. i can't imagine the cost of replacing it all right now. something isn't totally right when i plugged it all back in as the LEDs on the battery selector switch now make two rapid blinks. i may need to reset the switch but i'll get to that tomorrow too.

in the back of the above pic is a 170Ah lithium battery. needs a longer strap, and probably a second one, to fully secure it. i may need to come up with a better idea.

the box with the 3 lights is the renogy dc-dc mppt. the amber light means the solar panels are active. going to go check it once it gets dark to see if it shuts off. there's one green light for the secondary odyssey up front and the other green light is for the lithium battery. a fourth light should come on when the truck is running as it will accept a charge from the main batteries. not totally sure how that will work since the secondary is the only one connected but we shall see.

battery monitor should be here later this week. i've been trying not to buy anything but that was the last piece that i hadn't purchased yet.

the switch with the renogy label in the bottom right is the remote on/off for the inverter. it is currently not mounted but has a home near the battery. i've got to put together some 1/0 cables and get some sheet metal screws or something to attach it to the decked system.

i'll be adding some angle brackets at the bottom to attach the panels to the decked system. right now they're just kind of flopping around. i'm also going to pull everything out and spray the wood with some rattle can bed liner.

been digging around trying to find the meaning of the blinking LEDs on the blue sea 2146 switch. it controls the ACR for the dual batteries. finally found it buried in the ACR manual.

    Screen Shot 2020-05-03 at 9.23.23 AM.jpg

if you're using an ACR for your dual batteries, keep that thing handy. when i plugged everything back in last night, i was getting the double blink. flipped the ACR switch a couple of times, started the truck and it kicked back in. whew.

full sun today. so, i'm going to check on the volt meter for the secondary odyssey periodically and see if it charges from the solar. the LED indicating alternator charging on the mppt is not illuminating when the truck is running so i need to track that down.

next item knocked off the list.

    AF2DF78D-E777-4B0D-997B-5057275B08F9.jpg

all lights on. so now, when the truck is running, it will be sending a charge to the solar battery. wasn’t working last night because the circuit breaker to the left of the mppt, which connects to the secondary odyssey, was tripped.

    on to the next item...

    learned a few things.

once i attached the battery voltage sensor from the solar battery to the mppt, it stopped charging the solar battery and kicked over to the odyssey. the alternator signal light on the mppt now blinks. the blue sea controller kicked into charge mode and linked the batteries.

    ED8F565A-100C-41FC-B7E6-C5D4C29B1916.jpg

volt meter goes up to about 13.75 then cycles back down before climbing again. mppt just trickle charges the odyssey since the solar battery is full. need to take a closer look but i’m assuming that since the ACR kicked in, both odyssey batteries are getting a charge. if so, that’s pretty cool.

this is working out to be a great setup. really impressed with how easy the box is. kudos to renogy.

bed lights are wired up now too. need some more velcro.

will be pulling it all down for paint later this week and mounting the inverter.

took a volt meter to the primary odyssey. secondary has been hovering around 13.42ish (according to the dash meter) all afternoon. volt meter on the primary showed 13.35ish. so, it does appear that both odysseys are trickle charging off the solar.

most definitely. we'll make something happen.

spent the day tearing things down, painting and putting it all back together.

    2E067428-9705-4005-80DB-658B03FD3102.jpg

covered the boards with a few coats of bed liner and one coat of flat black. as i was putting everything back together, i decide it would better to have a separate breaker dedicated to the inverter. all the cables are run but final connection will have to wait for the breaker.

camp lights are mounted to the rack and the wiring is all run. pretty stoked on how they’re mounted to the rack. kept it stealthy. just need to make the final connection to the switch.

i love the renogy gear however, the shunt that came with the battery monitor doesn’t have anyway to mount it. grabbed a low profile trailer junction box to put the shunt into and it will be held to the box by some cable clamps.

i do wish i could have used a single piece of wood but, rockler was only selling baltic birch in 30” long pieces. not a big deal. just more of an ocd thing.

breaker will be here in a few days and then i can call this done.

now, if i was only as good at finding clients for the studio as i am working on the truck...

Honestly I think it is better to have it more modular like you have it. Can remove one half of it if you have to for any reason and not have to deal with a 6 foot or whatever piece of wood.

I'm very new to solar and electric work in general. Don't think I would have the knowledge to do this set up. What are your feelings on the Front Runner battery box?Screenshot_20200511-145543.jpg Screenshot_20200511-145546.jpg

depending on what you want to power, you could totally do something like that but, you might be better off with a kit from either goal zero or jackery. set the panels up and plug them in while you're sitting around camp during the day to charge the power pack. i know the goal zero yeti has an optional 12v cable that you can use to charge it while driving around. nothing to wire or mount on your truck.

the power packs are roughly 40Ah and they do have bigger options. either one would be able to power a fridge through the night. both power packs have AC, 12v and USB outlets.

Honestly the longest I would be out is a week at a time. Want to be able to charge some gadgets up as well. I would like to mount a 100w solar panel to the RTT and maybe have a suitcase style one if I'm parked in the shade and to help charge the battery bank fast. Still just really milling it over. It's not at the top of my list as of now.

Thanks for all the help! I'm sure I will have more questions.

ok, if you want a panel on the roof, something to look at would be this 100w kit from renogy. it's simple to wire up. panels go to mppt then you go from the mppt to the battery. the hardest part will be drilling the hole in your roof. :D

if you go with the battery box, i'd recommend dropping a lithium battery into it. they are a bit pricey but their longevity makes up for it. a 100Ah battery would probably serve your needs just fine. you could grab one from renogy or battle born would be my other recommendation.

if you want the briefcase setup as well, you'll need some mc4 branch connectors on the roof panel then verify the input voltage on whatever mppt controller you buy. that will determine whether you can put the panels in series or parallel. i had to put mine in parallel as the input voltage on the dc-dc mppt i'm using is maxed at 25v. i do not know the ramifications of plugging and unplugging additional panels will the system has power. you may have to disconnect the panel from the mppt every time you do it.

hope that doesn't muddy the waters any.

got the shunt mounted for the battery monitor. did not grab a pic but will get one.

just waiting on the 150a breaker for the inverter. usps was supposed to deliver this afternoon but it didn't show up with the regular mail drop so i'm not sure what happened. tracking says late delivery. :notsure: if it shows up tonight, i can mount it in the morning, get the inverter in place and turn it all back on.
