Hey I’ve got a few questions. How come the Tundra with crew max 4x4 and 5.5ft bed can only haul 9500lbs. My soon to be gone (hallelujah)Chevy Silverado 4x4 with 5.3 can haul 11000. Its got 3.55 gears and less horse power and torque then the Tundra?? Thank y’all.

Toyota is very conservative when it comes to performance ratings. I’d bet your Tundra will tow the same weight better than the Silverado.

Your chevy came with the max tow package didnt it? Toyota doesn't have that option. But if you compare models without that option tundra tows slightly more.

The rear suspension in the tundra is its weak point. If they beefed that up it could compete in the 11k-12k range

This is exactly right. The Big 3 tend to slightly overrate the capabilities of their trucks. Toyota does the opposite.

Neither truck can haul 9000+ pounds. However, they may be able to TOW that amount, depending on the tongue weight of the trailer. Haul and tow are two completely different things.

For 1/2 ton trucks, tow weight really means nothing. Focus on the "payload" or hitch weight- if you are within your available payload, your truck can safely tow it. You will run out of payload before getting close to max tow weight.

Frankly, I think Chevy overstates their tow ratings. I have know folks that have traded brand new Chevy half tons because they felt unsafe towing a 6k lb camper when Chevy said the truck could tow almost 2x that.

Shawn.roe24, it down not have the max trailering package just the Z71 off-road package, and also my salesman could have gave me the wrong information when I got the truck. I have towed a dump trailer with it with 4.5tons of stone and it went just fine lol. Way underpowered though.

So you pulled a dump trailer, probably 3500lbs filled with 9000lbs of stone with a half ton Chevy?

Towing capacity = GCWR - curb weight

Your Tundra is probably way heavier than your Chevy. The GCWR may also be lower due to weaker rear leaf springs or some other factor.

Does it really matter? If you considering reaching the limit then going over it by 1000lbs is probably not a big deal. Such 'hauling' is usually from the local stone/gravel shop to your back yard, you're not going cross country @ 70 MPH. Nothing will break.

    A bunch
The engine and drivetrain have a lot less to do with ratings - frame, suspension, brakes are far more important. HD gassers used to have less power than half ton engines and they could tow twice as much, and haul 3 times as much as half tons. And as others have said the Tundra suspension leaves a lot to be desired when it comes down to payload. Have to wonder if they re-did the rear frame to allow for 3" leafs if the payload could jump 3-500 lbs.
