If they do total it.... take the check...buy it back....fix it yourself...pocket leftovers... leftovers are always best. There are folks here that can help you fix your Tunny for half that. That's if you still want it...

Lol. They are really bending the insurance company over. Billing for scanning for codes, before and after.

The valence pieces are $28, they want $119. I guess they got to charge to paint them.

I was surprised to see they are changing the apron.

Regardless. I love this thread. It only reassures how much can be saved doing it yourself.

I really do hope they total it and you buy it back.

I got started rebuilding wrecks by being forced to do it. My dad purchased 2 cars of the same make. One hit in the front, one hit in the back. He told me to make them into 1 good car. I had to think which one was gonna be the easier fix. I'm not sure if I chose correctly, but I did have a good running car when I turned 16. Thanks Dad.

With the aid of the internet, rebuilding cars is 10 times easier. Cars are only 5 times as complex.

    Sorry to bogart the thread.

    Carry on.

I didn't note a battery on the list. Looked squeezed to me, but maybe not.
Personal prejudice, but I hate the clean & re-apply body badges. I've never had them stay on when the body shop did that, always start coming off 1 year down the line. I'd rather de-badge the vehicle, toss the removed badges into the bottom of the glove box for the next owner.

Since you are so close to being totaled - start your research now. If they total the car they will offer you a settlement amount.
    The amount is an OFFER!
If you have receipts for any recent work on the truck, if you have listings of vehicles comparable to yours which are selling for more than they offer you, if you can document that your vehicle is worth more than some national average value, then you can negotiate your settlement up.
You might get lucky & have an average truck & they offer you average value that is a match, but really - insurance companies are in business to take in as much money as they can & to pay out as little money as they can. Start your homework, be ready to prove it's worth, and hope it won't be necessary.

Good luck, this whole thing is a whole big lot of learning you never wanted. Adulting!

Take the money and run, no matter what happens, total or not. Take the money, you can scrap parts on here and rebuild it yourself at 1/4 of the price of that quote.

Also do your home work on owner retention I know n Cali they like to offer retention for high prices
When in fact there is law for max price for salvage vehicle owner retention it used to be 1500 in California
I have never seen the insurance company’s not try for more check the law in your state

If they choose to total it, i'd buy it back from the insturance company and fix it for less then 1/4 the price. However this all depends on you. If you're into DIY, if you have the time and if you're ok for the truck not working for next 2 to 3 weeks because it will definately take you sometime search and source parts for cheap from everywhere.

Don't recall the O.P. saying if vehicle DIY is even possible where he lives. Street parking, community bylaws, lease restrictions, etc.

If they total it, never accept the first offer. My old 2004 Tacoma, 2wd, 5 speed, reg cab stripper truck, it was totaled out in a wreck, hydroplaned on the interstate. Truck had 190k on it, but it was stupid clean, no rust, no body damage, 100% original paint, interior looked new, it was a really nice, very straight truck, ran/drove like a new truck, had all the documents/maintenance records from the original owner(my dad). They insulted me with a $4000 offer originally. I told them it was worth $6500, provided a bunch of comps of similar trucks for sale over the internets.

They upped their offer to $5900 the second time, I thought the truck was worth about $6000, shook the insurance adjuster's hand for $5900. If you respect the guys working at the insurance company, you will get what you want. I didn't throw a fit, just told them their offer was too low and provided some evidence to back up my claim.

Insurance doesn't have to be adversarial, just treat the guy on the other end of the phone as you want to be treated, at least Geico believed in that principle when I filed a claim. Yeah they low-balled me, but after 15 minutes of looking up values for my truck and emailing it to the claims guy, they gave me what I wanted for the total loss on my 2004 Tacoma. FYI, $5900 for a 2004 Tacoma, 2wd, 5 speed, reg cab, stripper truck, 190k miles, they paid out $5900 in 2018. That truck was bought by my dad for $12,000 out the door in 2004. 14 years and 190,000 miles later, the insurance paid out almost half the value of that truck. That is just stupid resale right there IMO.

I would also suggest that is the man is diy inclined but circumstances of his community prevents
It to go down to the local storage locker area or industrial zone and find space. I have rented space in workshops before short term. I am sure he could find a space if he is interested.

Yeah what's going on with the truck? I wouldn't want to drive it after an accident this bad, push for it to get totaled.

Hello all! I know it has been a bit, but I owe someone a 6 pack :) Insurance ended up giving me 15k for my truck so I took it and let them deal with the old truck. Upgraded to a 2016 Crewmax limited with offroad package.

Really not bad and superficial. I'm guessing $6,500 most of which is labor and paint. It's an older truck, parts are cheap with the most expensive being the hood. Given the age, the insurance company will use used/aftermarket parts.

I think it's really weird the running boards are on there. The impact was above the bumper, how did they get damaged?
