John Prine has some "new" stuff out? Probably my favorite artist ever. We were fortunate to see him on his last US tour. I've saw him 10 or 15 times, going back to high school. In an interview Roger Waters was asked about his songwriting inspiration and he said I wish I could write like John Prine.

    Cross Canadian Ragweed
    Dwight Yoakum
    Eddie Rabbit
    Eli Young Band
    John Conley
    John Anderson
    Kyle Park
    Mark Chestnut

and like most others said, Turnpike! Oh, you can’t forget King George!

yeah, but we all know how that turned out as in legendary...... June Carter didn't exactly suck suck either. Quite frankly I prefer the old "West" sound as in Marty Robbins et al........Charlie Pride, Glen Campbell.
My dad's favorite country artist was and mine to this day is Ray Price. Especially "For the good times" written by Kris Kristofferson......this new rock country is simply that ...country music with a rock twang.......but mostly rock with the twang voice....meh.... there is not a women alive that wouldn't mind her husband, boy friend, or significant other to play this song from time to time....."Who is that? Dang that sounds good." The last of the breed........
True talent lasts and is unforgettable.

Saw John Prine about 11 or 12 years ago at Paramount Theater here in Denver. More folk than country. #1 in my book and quite frankly Allison Kraus needs to be mentioned in that category. Bob Dylan is a no brainer.

When I was a kid, my grandfather would sing this song and many others while working in his shop. I had forgotten about it until Jamey Johnson covered it. It brought back a lot of memories.

Since your driving through NC and talking country music - why not give a listen to a Charlie Poole song or 2.

I’ll be honest - I’m not highly familiar with him…but knew the name and reputation he had. Interesting guy for sure - everyone associates guys like Earl Scruggs with banjo music - Poole was the original.

Didn’t have a long career - but think of him as the Tony Iommi of the banjo. An accident caused issues with his hand that he more than overcame. Died at 39 of alcohol - if that ain’t country music.

Yeah. Didn't think about Alison Krauss. Her collaborations with Robert Plant are epic.
Kind of a who would've thunk. But really good.

Mentioned above Alison Krauss, together with Jerry Douglas and his dobro. Personally know his son Grant and old buddy Billy Perry, man the groupie stories they can tell! Love me some Reba, Willie, Hank, Merle, Judds, Toby, Kenny, Conway, Mel, I could literally go on and on. Just can't get enough classic country on the road! Beef jerky, fresh veggies, ice cold coca cola, and lots of gasoline. Safe travels!!

Man, I'm gonna get roasted I think but try the Outsiders album by Eric church. And his newer ones. It's got some blues to it at times, I don't consider it pop country like the rest of the new shit. It ain't Cash but he ain't tryin to be either. There are a lot of new singles from a new split album or some shit.
