Im' OCD about keeping track of expenses related to my truck. Today I finished categorizing everything, so I could know how much I've spent on my truck by category, especially mods.

I was pretty shocked at two things: how much I've spent on mods, and how little I've spent on repairs.

    upload_2021-5-20_14-52-24.jpg

    For reference...I have a '15 SR5 Crewmax 4x4 that I purchased used in June 2016 w-15k miles.

I'm curious if anyone tracks expenses too...if so, how do you do it? how much have you spent?

Looking at $13K Mods. Here we thought the cost of being a member of this forum was free.

I keep track too, in excel. I even have formulas that calculate how much the truck costs me on a daily basis (including gas!) as I keep adding mods/accessories. So far, I'm up to $7,214 in mods and $588 in accessories (interior stuff mainly). Got stuff from Rago Fabrication, Cali-raised lighting, ARB, etc.. lol... it's insane how much MORE I could spend.

I started a list of mods I've done and mods that I'd like to do. I feel like I've hardly done anything to my truck, yet I have already dropped $2,500. I could probably spend $8K in a heartbeat if I did all the things on the to-do list right now.

I'm showing good restraint so far, (though admittedly spent more than I thought already)
    but with this truck here:
    IMG_20190502_161900.jpg
After I traded it in I sat down and added up all the money I spent on it and was absolutely horrified. Especially since I live in the middle of the woods and trying to sell truck parts (or anything) requires more effort than I feel like giving so I traded it in the way it was.

Just think, in June of this year, that depreciating asset has cost you ~1100.00 per month on average. :anonymous:

You forgot to include your time cost in your report. Plus insurance, tags, annual fuel, and maybe traffic citations. Sorry to inflate your figures.

Yep, sucks to drop fifty grand on a truck and find out it needs thousands more to make it functional.

I added 10K in depreciation in my figures of his Tundra. Crazy what it costs to own vehicles...LOL

I'm at 966.00 per month on my truck at 5 years old, been paid off since day one. If I keep for 120 months it drops to 483.00...

Didn't drop 50 grand, and truck was fully functional the day I drove it off the lot. All the stuff I've added has been cosmetic or an abundance of caution.

yeah true. my spreadsheet does not include:
    1. interest paid on the loan,
    2. fuel, and
    3. insurance.

all significant costs. depreciation is also significant, but I don't consider it as it's not "realized" (doesn't affect my bank account) until i sell.

Weak suspension for a truck, no tranny cooler, seat covers and sun shield are a must have to retain value, etc.

Meets the payload on the sticker. Fully functional. If more payload is required, so is a bigger truck.

*Smart ass response* Pretty sure my AC would work just as well on Bruce Jenner as anyone else.

*Real response* That one I'll give to ya. I may add a cooler, but I don't tow anything super heavy. It might wait a while.

That's true for any vehicle, so it's not like the Tundra is letting anyone down. Also, as I plan to drive this truck until it dies (or I do) the value retention is less concerning. Toyotas, even in rough shape, hold value well.

your not alone in that department - think I have like 3 grand in accessories/parts on order - hoping they get here ahead of/along with my Pro.

Trying to ensure don’t have a truck and waiting on stuff for months - then making 3 trips to shop.

You guys counting pennies could never handle boat ownership.

Life is too short to count pennies. I have no intentions of dying rich.

True statement - wanna be a millionaire with a boat - start out with 10 million and buy a small boat - you will be down to a million in no time.

    This^^^...

I'm 61 and the last truck I owned was a '95 (Pre-Tacoma) with the 2.4L 22RE...Fantastic engine, btw...So I put 335,000 on it, gave it to my oldest son and he drove it for another 15k before we sold it. I have been driving my wife's hand-me-down 4Runner's (technically trucks) ever since....ANYWAY....after seeing numerous friends and family pass over the past two years, I have since bought a boat, a condo at Pawley's Island, and FINALLY...my beloved Inferno Tundra...I'd never discourage anyone from saving for rainy days...but we better enjoy it, fellas...otherwise, why did we save for it in the first place???

I have a spreadsheet that started as a way to keep track of current and future mods. It color coded so I just change the color once I add them. Bought the truck for 34k with 12 miles brand new in 17. 15k in mods later it is still the best money I have ever spent, and there is about 8k left on my list.
