Just bought a used 2009 Tundra with about 120,000 miles.

Noticed I was losing some coolant after long trips.

Got underneath and saw the pink buildup. (Pic below)

What am I looking at here? This is directly under the engine. I’ve had the truck for about a week and still finding my way around.

What’s the labor like for DIY water pump replacement??

    Worth the effort?

What engine? If it’s a 4.7 you might as well change your timing belt. No idea about the 5.7.

A failed water pump isn't particularly shocking on the 5.7, especially at that age. I'm considering replacing the pump on my 2008 that's original and not leaking so I get to choose when to deal with it.

It's not a particularly easy job, but certainly not impossible to DIY.

I guess that all depends on your mechanical abilities.
I work on broken shit all the time like a lot of other folks on here. So it's nothing but a thing.
The 5.7wp is buried under some shit on the front of the engine driven by the serpentine belt, but,I think if you can find it you should be able to change it. Not sure how much it would cost to take it to a shop.

It's definitely a coolant leak , I would try and find out where its coming from , clean every thing real good and top off coolant and start up the rig , start looking for new wet spots. (obliviously don't stick things in the rotating mass) but locating the source of leak is important.

as for water pump replacement its real fun not to hard after you get in it , but a lot of things have to come off and be moved even the radiator. I did mine cause of one of the free MultiPoint's and noticing coolant loss , change out my thermostat also (old habit) also changed out radiator. "one thing I found out while going in was the service tech missed that radiator had hole and leak in it an the spot on the water pump that was leaking was a bolt that goes into to the water jacket  but all ready had the parts so I change em any way's.

AllData says about 5-6 hours for a water pump replacement, but you'll want to make sure its the water pump in the first place. Clean everything and refill like @NueveTundra said, and check for the active leak. Rubber hoses, plastic coolant lines, and the radiator itself are also common failures.

Not to totally derail the thread but I just noticed my coolant level is super low. Well below the LOW line but I can still see fluid. Can I just add coolant and top it off? Or do I have to drain & fill with new?

Always can just add more , just make sure its the same type (Tundras should be using Asian red "looks pink") but if some reason you have had it serviced at general lube and they put universal green in it then use that. (Or flush the system if it's universal green and refill with the Toyota pink stuff. :);)

Water pump is easy, no need to remove the radiator, just put some thick cardboard in between the fan and radiator to keep from damaging it. Should only take a couple hours not including coolant drain and refill if you're handy. Use your new waterpump and outline it on a piece of cardboard along with the mounting holes, as you remove the bolts, stick them in the appropriate holes in your cardboard template, some bolts are different lengths. Replace the thermostat, tensioner, idler puller and belt while your at it. Aisin makes the pump, thermostat, and pulley, which is exactly the same as the Toyota parts, but cheaper. Dayco makes the belt.

Get yourself a pressure tester and don't guess. Pump it up and you will find the culprit quickly.

If it’s running down the back of the engine and down the transmission bell housing, it could also be the valley plate. That’s Reallllly fun.
