Long time Toyota guy here because Toyota owns their problems unlike alot of other manufactures.

That said, I do have some gripes on my 23 Platinum with 13k on it that make me really like, but not love the truck in no particular order.

    1. Grill is hideous and I'm reconsidering an aftermarket TRD grill for better looks alone.

    2. Tow hooks? Laughable.....a complete whiff IMO so shame on Toyota for that decision.

    3. Radio navigation is far too complicated with too many clicks.......I mean when it takes 6 presses just to begin a station selection that's not just inconvenient but a safety issue.

    4. I had to buy a Carista device to tweak alarms that are obnoxious and sometimes unnecessary. Why have an option to turn off lights automatically when you can't silence the "lights on" alert which was incredibly loud and annoying.

    5. Morning dew water pours in from the windows if you open them before its had a chance to stream off at speed.

    6. Cab and bed LED's are uselessly underpowered.

    7. Factory tires are a complete joke and have no business on a $70k+ "truck".

I want to love the truck but I'm just not there yet. Maybe with some proven reliability it'll move up to the next level, but out of the box I have to wonder who Toyota pays to test these vehicles.

I'd love to get the advanced package but I don't know if I can pass this one up for only $62,853... Doubt I'll find a deal this good on a truck of this spec again.

Also learned that it was built in June of 2023 so it's a later build which sounds like it's a good thing.

To get the same features from Ford, chevy or gmc, add $20000

It's a sweet truck, especially in the platinum or 1794 range. If your not going off road, skip trd pro or package. Just not worth it. Also, the platinum and above have features not included in the pro.

OP, I’m having a hard time deciding what to do as well. I keep looking at this F150. I need more towing and I’m attracted to the higher payload capacity and the 36 gallon fuel tank. But none of that matters if it’s sitting in the back lot at the Ford dealer waiting for some random electrical repair. I guess I’m less confident about taking a chance on a Ford. I also like the folding rear seat and the floor space back there.

The Platinum Tundra is the way I will probably go. The glossy black trim on those is weird IMO — like on the top of the tail gate. To counter that guess I’d go with MGM for less contrast. Here is the F150 that I thought was nice.

a body shop can paint those glossy parts color match easy, that’s what I did , looks a ton better

Not the best pics but you get the idea, I didn’t like the glossy black either, plus makes the wheel and tire combo look better

Thanks! That looks amazing. I saw your earlier post, much appreciated. What you have is what Toyota should be doing. With the stock gloss black and trim “accents”, I feel like I should have some gold chains and a backwards hat.

    Keep in mind:
Interest rates are high so sales are slowing down

Supply of tundras is getting better and dealers are getting more and more trucks on the lots.

Dealers are getting more desperate to move the inventory, so you should be able to get a good deal anywhere now

if shopping, remember there are 1000+ '23s on stop sale due to fuel line recall. Suspect those will be heavily discounted (fire sale?) once released

They’re such nice looking trucks! They’re just hit and miss… Some are great, some are dumpster fires.

After owning a couple of those and driving an Tundra Platinum today, I’d recommend the Tundra!

Valid point… The dealership that has this one has another identical one that’s held up due to the recall.

I was in the same situation as the OP. I had a 22 F150 with multiple issues including a drivetrain shudder that I learned could be reduced (but not eliminated) by using premium fuel, a transmission problem that caused the tranny to slam like someone had hit the rear of the truck from time to time, occasional temporary failures of the main screen, repeated false "tailgate down" warnings, and an electrical draw that would completely drain the battery in less than a day on rare occasions. I was just one of the unlucky guys that got a bad F150.

I traded for a 24 Tundra recently and after 2,000 miles, I couldn't be happier. After my experience with the F150, I smile every time I drive the Tundra. It's smooth, it drives very well, and so far, everything works like it should. I know there are folks out there who have had problems with their Tundra, but so far, my 24 is nearly perfect.

One thing that worried me was the turning diameter of the Tundra. On paper, my F150 turned sharper than the Tundra. In practice, the Tundra turns noticeably sharper than the F150 I had. It makes me wonder if my F150 had a steering issue that I never recognized.

Cheers buddy! I feel every bit of your pain from the F-150 experience… Had pretty much all of the same issues.

That Platinum I drove today felt like a rock solid luxury SUV by comparison. The rear coil springs vs leafs are a game changer. And even though it isn’t as tech forward as the F-150, I feel like it’s just better conceived. Also, something that hasn’t been mentioned yet, the stereo is 5X better than the B&O “Unleashed” system in the Ford… That system was such a joke.

The only real quality concern with the new 3rd Gen is bearing failures from an as yet unspecified cause. This is affecting a small percentage of trucks from what we can see, and in and of itself isn’t majorly concerning to me.

What is concerning are the lead times to repair these trucks when this happens, and Toyota’s lack of communication, or assistance to affected owners. A quick glance at the Tundra engine failure thread shows consistent piss poor customer service dealing with bad ordered Tundras, this owners frequently needing to fight with Toyota and dealers for information and rental reimbursement etc. This should be very basic stuff to take care of but Toyota seems to be falling short of expectations.

Products can fail, it happens. How the manufacturer takes care of the situation is important, Toyota seems to be doing a poor job of that.

I had almost all of those issues plus the BANG about every 1/5 times I went into reverse. It literally got to the point where every time I got in the truck I looked for what goofy or not quite right thing was going to happen. I think all the new 1/2 tons are overly complicated but that's what the customer base wants. Once I got the seat adjustment, bluetooth issues configured correctly it hasn't had a burp. If anything, the drivetrain just keeps running better and I keep getting better with the truck as I learn the plethora of small features and settings. I do think the infotainment in the Ford F150 is better and more intuitive but it locked up off and on so that kind of cancels that out.
Glad you're having a good experience, I am too.

It almost seems like Ford is going on write off the current gen of F150's and make improvements on the next gen? When I chasing the SW/electronic issues on my doomed F150 nothing seemed to be iterative. I wondered if they were even doing regression testing on modules. Just one patch after another after another.
I assume you don't share a similar view on the superduty line? I do think those are sorted at least I hope so as that's what I've always had until the F150. I would still be cautious of the >'23.

Strong, strong recommendation to qualify the service side as much as you do the truck side. Make a faux call to the Ford dealer to ask for a warranty appointment and see what they say. Meet the service manager and ask them how many people get loaners, how long does it take to get a module and do they have enough techs to program them once they get parts. Also, swing by the body shop and ask about getting a fender. Ask the same at Toyota or GMC. Do the recall research on all. I think every customer needs to be eyes wide open on how functional the service departments are now BEFORE they buy.
