I have always built my personal computers and do the computer ordering and setup at my work. Even built our last 2 office servers as i was able to build it for less than half the cost of a dell server.
For our office workstations for running CAD and rendering, we have been ordering the dell XPS special edition towers with i9-9900, 1080 graphics card, 1tb m.2, 64gb ddr5 ram, w10 pro. Dell had a huge sale last month, was able to get the computer tower for $2300 each. I could not build a similar spec'ed computer for less.

Nice setup! The i9-9900k and m.2 has been spoiling me at work, my home computer needs a major overhaul

Yeah I couldn't make up my mind on a case. One I really wanted they stopped producing I guess. Found a build someone did on youtube and really liked the "be quiet!" case, mostly from a construction standpoint. Wasn't the cheapest one around, but looks to be built like a tank and some great features.

Damn, that's a hell of a monitor, haha.

I do wonder how well a curved screen would work for editing photos though, humm.

Damn, how in the world did I miss this thread all this while. Good to hear from all the IT folks and their hobbies. I also work in IT, mainly with front end support.

I build my first computer in 2008 with Antech 900 case/ Nvidia nForce 790i mobo/ Nvidia Geforce 7700GT Graphic card/Intel Quad Core CPU/Corsair PC3-12800 1600MHz starting on Windows XP With 2 WD Velociraptor running on Raid 0 was the most dangerous and the best performing PC I had. It finally died last year so i stripped it off all the components and now I am going repurpose the Antec 900 case and build a Nas with it. Thinking of going the FreeNAS route but Unraid is still an option.
Let me know what you guys think Freenas or Unraid.

I've had 5 FreeNAS boxes running in the basement for about 12 years I think. I thought Unraid was a little more quirky. Not bad, just different. :)

#1 is a 3TB RAID1 with SMB enabled. That is the main box that everything in the house maps as a network drive.
#2 is a 2TB RAID1 that through RSYNC automatically backs up #1 Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday.
#3 is the same as #2 except it backs up #1 Monday, Wednesday, Friday.
#4 is the same as #2, but I go downstairs on Saturday and physically power up/power down for another backup from #1.
#5 is a 3TB JBOD with all my music and a lot of my movies. Basically my media storage that feeds my Plex server(on a Windoze box).

The 5 NASes are all on old MSI WinPC boxes, running Atom processors with 1GB of RAM each if I remember correctly. They run cool with an external brick power supply and draw next to nothing. Unfortunately that particular box is discontinued. I wish I had bought a couple as spares.
I'm still running the original version of FreeNAS, version 0.7.1 Shere (revision 5127). I have it loaded and running from a CF card in the on-board slots. I believe they have upgraded and rewritten the entire package since I set everything up, but these are good and stable, and they are all blocked from the outside world at the router.

Excessive? Yeah probably, but I'm kinda nerdy and like to tinker with things like that. And I've got a boatload of pics and videos on the main box, so plenty of backups ;)

Nerd alert. There they are top left in this pic.
On the desk is the Nixie tube clock I'm building.

Very Nicely done Mike - I didn't see any PSU's. I am also considering either a Synology or a Qnap NAS i know they're expensive but that's something I am willing to explore as they've had great reviews especially the Synology software. It has public cloud integration such as Amazon cloud which i am thinking of using as my offsite backup.

The Nixie tube clock is cool, I considered FIYing a smart mirror myself.

I inherited a HP DL380P Gen 8 Server. 8x600GB drives, Dual Xeon E5-2640 CPUs (24 cores total). 192GB of RAM. Set up proxmox on it. Not a lot running on it now as far as VMs. Mostly playing with different containers, a win10 image, second pihole box, some different linux VMs to test out. Working on setting up a segmented off pentesting lab on it. Wish I had more time to actually play and get things working. Also keeping my eyes out as there's another box which is similar but Gen9 with 384GB of RAM that I might be able to snag in a few months.

Also have a nice quiet box running FreeNAS with 5x2TB WD Red drives. I haven't had it running for several years so I'm in the process of rebuilding it.

Love me some dual Xeons. I built the one described on some internet page I stumbled on. I use it for crunching on the 4K video from my drone

That looks like a good time. You’re missing an integral part though....

I don’t see a six pack anywhere. Pretty sure you can’t assemble a computer without a beer.

First boot to make sure everything comes on. Now to install windows and get it running. Will also be able to change all the lights to be uniform.

Man I haven't done this in forever... Wish my case had a PSU shroud and cable channels but at least there's some space to route things around

    Specs:
    Ryzen 2700 / stock cooler
    32gb Ballistix
    Gigabyte Aorus Pro B450
    Samsung 850 evo 500gb
    Seagate 2tb
    Asus R9 290
    Seasonic Gold 750w
    Antec 1100 v2

I'll probably upgrade the 290 to maybe a 1660 or 2060 later this year, and pull all 5 fans for some Noctuas. The case/PSU/storage/GPU are from I think 2012-2014.

First computer was a Commodore 64 hooked to a B&W 13" TV in 1985. Loved it so much I opened a computer store. Learned how to build them and use the CPM operating system. Then dos was born. AMD owned the CPU world with their '86's then Intel took over. Eventually sold the store but kept building computers. I'm happy now with the 5 I have still running i7's and Xeons.
