clock spring

I know this is like me an old topic. But I will admit, I'm old and I'm confused. So I was wondering if anyone had the OEM part number for the clock spring for my 2003 tundra. Their are just to many parts and part numbers floating a round , that it confuses old people like me. So I want to start out with the OEM part number and go from there. Thanks in advance.

 

Welp, I pulled a random 2003 SR5 V8's VIN# off the internet.

I used the sticky thread at the top of the forum that gives very simple steps to look up your parts, that points to one of the more popular EPC sites online.

• I plugged the VIN I found into the Search, then clicked Search.
• I went to the "Electrics" section.
• I went into the "Switch & relay" section from there.
• I scrolled down to the steering wheel schematic, and I got this full size view.
• I clicked on the clockspring, it says the part number is 84306-0C021 and I've linked that to the Toyota Parts site.

Note the price shown at that bolded link is just the MSRP price; before you get sticker shock click the links to "shop this dealer" near you ... as you see below, my local dealer is offering more than $100 in discount over what they'd charge me if I just walked up to the counter.

Will that part fit your truck, knowing not all parts are universal? I dunno, but you can always follow the bulleted steps above with your own VIN to confirm.

I'm older too, don't use age as an excuse, you're awesome.

 

PS - important to note, the clockspring is a huge safety part on the vehicle. A faulty one can:

• Throw an airbag in your face while driving.
• Cause the horn to not work, when you really need it to avoid killing someone or someone killing you.
• It can cause neverending ABS lights.

We all know the price of OEM is high. No question. But with the problems some dudes have had on here buying aftermarket, especially from fleaBay and scAmazon ... you gotta ask yourself, is it worth it with this specific part?

I'm biased, it's not my money. But I won't buy anything except OEM when it comes to safety/structural parts whose failure could kill me.

 

Thanks for the info. What you point out is just what bothers me about the clock spring. My inspection is coming up in June, so I have to get off my butt and replace it and my O2 sensors. The clock spring I can replace just sitting in the truck. The O2 sensors, means I have get my 79 year old butt on my back and under my truck. I already know what a pain those will be to replace. Important note for you on the AFR/O2 sensors for the '03 SR5 with a V8.

The 2WD and 4WD trucks use different sensors. I went to www.densoautoparts.com and did a quick search. If you have 4WD, by chance, note the passenger side sensor is a different part number, ending in 4162. If you're 2WD, you'll need two of the part ending '4161' and two of the part ending '4169'. Note the quantity "QTY" and "drive type" boxes in the pic below.

And yeah, you're a few years younger than my dad. I can imagine this is not something he'd want to bust knuckles on and he'd expect me to do the dirty work.

Thanks again. You just save me time. That part number is the one for my truck. I do have the 4 wheel drive. I don't put many miles on my truck. Being a 2003, it only has 100,250 miles. For this truck , that all most new.

 

Yup, 4WD, here's your part numbers, it's weird the 4WD uses different downstream sensors, but we see it through some of the years.

Also note, the downstreams show as having a gasket in this FSM page. That p/n is 89466-20020. (Sometimes it has -83 at the end)

Thank's again. This diagram saves me a lot of looking, since I have had not reason to look for them till now. A friend just offered to let me use his lift, when I do the O2 sensors. Man will that save my old back some time and pain. Shifty "from salt, thanks for the harbinger of unsolicited advice" I'll take it any time.

 

Ok guys I'm at a loss now. I got the original equipment part, which was the same part number shifty looked up for me. I even used my vin number to order. It came yesterday, I replaced the old with the new. They were Identical. Everything went smoothly. But that dash light is still on. Anyone have this same problem? Did I not do something right? Or do you have to drive it before it goes out? I even cleared the codes. I use an innova 3160e analyzer. It was what I used that said the clock spring was bad.

 

I almost always mention some variation of the following to anyone reporting clockspring issues, and I even made a point to add it to the community megathread after another member mentioned I should probably do that:

And I say that because buying a clockspring is expensive as shit. But you seemed 100% convinced it was the clockspring and wanted info on the part number, so ... I gave that instead.

You may want to look into that. Sorry. I thought you'd already done all the diagnostics needed.

 

My horn is working and I checked the clock spring. Their are 5 turns in a clock spring. After I installed the new one and before installing the steering wheel I checked to make sure it was 2 1/2 turns in each direction. Also I unhooked both the negative and positive battery terminals. An old habit I got in to when I started welding my exhaust pipes. Any time you weld you have to unhook the battery. I also marked the alignment when taking anything that rotates apart.

 

I fail to see in any of your past posts what problem you're experiencing that causes you to change clock spring and O2 sensors.
Also, what code is your Innova reporting ?
Perhaps knowing the problem instead of part #'s would help us understand.

If I could find a winning loto number I would use it and use it to win and let someone else do this work.
My Innova is an analyzer as well as a code reader. I can't remember the codes, but this analyzer tells you what is giving you the codes. It also lets you check the O2 sensors one at a time. It told me Bank one down stream sensor was bad. But I feel if one is bad, the others will soon follow. So since I have to be under the truck just replace them all and be done with it. I got my clock spring form the local dealer using the vin number. So I know that's the right one. The Innova reader not only has a code but said the clock spring was bad. That light came on a year ago. I've just been putting it off. I didn't like sitting out in the driveway in the winter replacing it or on my back changing O2 sensors. Like I said at 78 then, it's a pain getting down their and back up. Believe me when you get to my age , it's no longer fun. Well since I have the time, I'm going to take it a part again and take another look. While it's off, I'll check that ground. Believe me I'm no wiz at fixing my truck, but I'm just use to doing things myself and learning. I've rebuilt more outboard motors In my life then I can remember.. I also weld and some times build things , just to learn how. But I have to rethink doing things myself I guess.

 

Please get us an actual code if you're able to. It may help us point you in the right direction

 

Right now the computer is clear , so I'll have to drive it for a few days to get codes.

 

Well Had to go to tractor supply this morning. 60 mile round trip. These are the only codes now showing. P0136 oxygen sensor circuit bank 1 sensor 2. And P0442 evaporative emission control system leak detected( small leak). So their the only codes showing. The leak is new but won't be that hard to find under the hood. That's normally a vacuum leak, if memory serves me right. I'm going to pull the air bag just check for the ground as you guys suggested.

 

P0442 … 50/50 chance it’s the gas cap, either you aren’t twisting ‘til it clicks or it’s faulty. Buy OEM, but not from scAmazon or fleaBay or WallyMart online. Start going over your rubber vacuum hoses and check the ends for cracking/splitting. Do you have the EVAP canister in the engine bay, between the master cylinder and battery, or did they stop doing that in 2001-2002?

P0136 … driver side downstream sensor. Did you say you replaced them all recently?

 

Do you still have an airbag light on at this moment? If you do what is the code for it?

 

Well, for what it's worth I'm 55 and don't like getting up and down. I'll do it, I'm thankful I get to lay on a creeper that rolls nicely on the cement. Had too many times lying in gravel,mud,dirt,etc. But yeah, getting up and down is still a pain.

 

Well I took it off and redid it. But this time I took pictures. The first shows the light still on. And their is no code for it. The second one shows the back of the air bag, where their is a lug for the ground. The third one isn't as clear as I hope. The clock spring has an arrow that points up and says top. On the clock spring is a sight glass that has a yellow marker. If the clock spring is not aligned properly that yellow marker will not be seen. I keep my wheels straight and the same as the steering wheel before dis assembly. But that light is still on and their is no code for it now. See my confusion and frustration. No I still have to replace the 02 sensors. also sorry for the dirt interior, I was helping a friend get fire wood and haven't cleaned up yet.

 

On getting up and down, I had open Hart surgery with four by passes in 2005 a year later I was back teaching my marital arts classes. both knees replaced 2018.( to many jumps where I landed in trees back in the 60's) I can't kneel on my knees. So getting up and down is a real pain. Doctor's tell me to take it easy. To hell with that. I'm going to do what I want and if it means the end so what, it's going to happen some day. But the most important thing is I still have my sense of humor.

 

My Innova will show P….power train codes automatically but I have to select SRS from the menu to see any B….SRS codes. Isn't yours the same ?

 

The truth is , yes it does, but I forgot about that feature. Thanks for reminding me. I'll have to check that.

 

Ok their is a code in the SRS. It's B0103 short in D squib circuit (to +B) both past and present. Ok since I don't know what that means. Does any one know? That's different then the clock spring bad from last year. So I may have solved the clock spring problem, but now this is keeping that light on. Thanks for reminding me about the srs.

 

"Squib circuit" is a generic word for the circuit/wire that activates the airbag. The SRS (safety restraint system) has its own ECU, and the SRS ECU runs through a series of checks during each drive cycle to validate whether it's seeing the correct signals/circuits/levels it expects on things to ensure proper operation in a crash.

Your challenge now is to figure out, "where is the D squib circuit and what does it do.

The D squib circuit consists of the airbag sensor assembly, spiral cable and steering wheel pad.
It causes the SRS to deploy when the SRS deployment conditions are satisfied.
For details of the function of each component, see 'DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION'.
DTC B0103/12 is recorded when a B+ short is detected in the D squib circuit.​

That's taken from HERE which also contains troubleshooting steps if you wanted to follow. But seriously, maybe check that one ground I mentioned and (I think?) linked you up with earlier before getting in too deep.

I found @MEWaters had the same code on his system, but I don't know if he ever figured it out. Not only could it potentially be a wiring problem, I think it could also be that your SRS ECU is faulty, but I'd test the wiring per that document first.

 

Yeah, kind of figured it would be a steering wheel pad code. Did you happen to turn key on at any time air bag was unplugged. Or have you checked to make sure it's indeed plugged in good. You'll then have to clear SRS code via your Innova.



BTW….your 2003 factory service manual can be found in that mega thread shifty is always referring to. There are trouble shooting procedures in there if it comes to that.

 

Ok I feel like I'm a last on the right path. But two things have me a little confused. One where is this spiral cable I see coming up in a lot of post. and that also goes for the steering wheel pads. These are two things I've never dealt with.

 

spiral cable and clock spring are one in the same.

Steering wheel pad is just that, the pad you push to go honk honk and bolt the air bag to.
