Easy day today. Some our guys are flying out while some are flying in. During our morning inspection of the prerunners we found one of the trailing arms had a crack in it. So we’re gonna get our local guy down here to weld it up. The guys flying in will prerun about 20-30 miles north of here back into Loreto.

Here’s the view from my hotel room.

Back in 2000 the Baja 1000 was the Baja 2000. It was 1800+ miles. Ivan Stewart couldn’t be the sole driver for a race that long. So PPI and Toyota employed the legendary Larry Roesler to take over for him and they would split the driving. This is his fire suit at the Rice and Beans in San Ignacio. Very cool.

Mike, how easy is it for spectators to follow along? Are there hotels available? Do you need special passes? Is it kid friendly?

My first one was in 2005 and I’ve done it every year since. I love it.
For this one being that it’s a peninsula run, it’s not really set up to spectate logistics wise. A loop race with the start and finish in Ensenada is much easier as you can go to several spots to see the race. The easiest place to watch it would be the start as they go through the wash. That way you see all the vehicles.

Hotels are booked months in advance. Not too many Americans come down to spectate. It’s mainly the locals spectating.

Probably not kid-friendly either. I'd say it'd be worse than Talladega, Atlanta or Daytona in the infield. After all it is in Mexico.. but it would be one heck of a time. Wow 12 yrs in a row... Are you still married? That could cut into a marriage.

Yeah there’s always some dumbass during the race trying to show he’s macho.

The kids that flew in yesterday prerun some of their section today which took them to the other side of Baja. So we have to give chase them and gas them up. We did that at Scorpion Bay which I’ve never been to. And it is gorgeous. If you love to surf and fish with perfect weather every day of the year, that’s the place to retire to.

We are now back in Loreto trying to plan dinner and tomorrow’s prerun.

740D5609-9876-47BD-B172-A69C9A609638.jpg I have seen several dozen Tundras down here. Two 3rd gens at Scorpion Bay (pictured) just today. Of all these owners I’m shocked none of them are on here.

San Javier mission. 18 miles outside of Loreto. All paved road with 5-6 water crossings. This is part of the race course.

Made it to La Paz. Fed a few more stray dogs along the way.

Tomorrow is the work day for my Tundra. I have to tow a prerunner back to La Paz.

There will be live tracking the day of the race, Thursday. It on the SCORE International website I think. I also have a friend running a fb page called Fishgistics that will be updating his page throughout the day.

So that was quite a drive. Thought the trailer broke again. It didn’t. The trailer wheel bearings were getting hot and didn’t want to smoke a bearing in the middle of nowhere when it’s 96* outside. So I had to turn the trailer brake gain down from a 6.0 to a 4.5 which was noticeable and put more load on the Tundras brakes. There’s lots of hills to climb and descend coming out of La Paz and going into Loreto. The road itself isn’t as bad this far south as it is up north though where there is almost no road maintenance. Coming down the last big hill with lots of tight turns the brakes were getting a little soft and hot.

But my Tundra was able to haul the weight of the car and that shitty trailer.

    Tomorrow is race day.

Right now our team is spread across Baja. The drivers are staying in Ensenada and some are flying out of there tomorrow to Bay of LA. One truck with the head mechanic/prep guy is chasing them down. The rest of the team guys are either driving to where they need to be or are already close to it. I won’t see there cars until about 3-4am Friday morning.

Time for dinner and a margarita.

Forgot to add the car numbers. Cars 138 and 153.
