The way I see it, the keys are simply an emergency back-up if you forget the code, or possible if the combination lock malfunctions. I am storing them some place safe, to be used only as such a backup.

Yep, that's why I am installing the Pop A Lock auto tailgate lock. Didn't get a chance to get my needed Lowe's parts today - may be tomorrow.

@RainMan_PNW, it looks like yours is defective. You might consider returning it for one with a bent corner. :D

My truck came with the oem safe from the dealer. Anyone know where I can buy a tray that will fit the half of the console without the safe? It’s like a black hole that sucks everything to the bottom.

It looks like this. Maybe there is some tray that will go over the top.

Not sure if they sell just the side tray. You may have to get the full tray and chop it in half to make it fit.
Your's doesn't look exactly like the Amazon version, but maybe you could contact one of these sellers and see if they can send you a "replacement" tray.

Hi Ruggybuggy, it's been kind of busy last few days. I tried with the paper and flashlight and nothing out of the norm. I even tried with a little strong magnet I have but nothing either. By looking at the pictures, can you tell if it's a factory box or an aftermarket? I already went to Toyota for a recall work and seems they were not too knowledgeable about the safe. If it's factory I'll go again and push a little more, but if it's aftermarket I'll be getting my drill.

it's definitely a Toyota safe. It looks exactly like mind with the same printing on the combination mechanizm. Your dealership probably doesn't have much experience because they just don't see to many come in with issues.

when you move the knob it looks like you have some resistance. Mine moves without any resistance. If you push in the pin while turning the knob does anything change? If you turn the combination numbers off 000 does the knob turn?

When you do get inside I'm curious on what your going to find.

Both of these can be breached in the same manner.

Have you noticed the guy with the issue has the expensive one?

I was merely pointing out the fact that either could be gotten into, if so inclined, and that even the expensive ones can have issues.

    Saving $150 is also beneficial.

Sure anything can be breached but the knock off would take a large screwdriver to bend past the tab while the Toyota one is going to need a crowbar.

    You are correct.

However, were someone looking for something specific, neither would pose much slowing.
I’m all about quality, but in some situations a significant savings outweighs the positives.
I see the box as more of a deterrent than an impenetrable barrier.

I got the full box version from ConsoleVault. There's still room on the top of the safe for me to keep a mess of unlocked stuff, with the cover closed, but wanted to be able to lock down everything I could if ever needed. Thought about the half console for the purposes of CC, but if you're going into a situation looking for fast access, you should be fully prepared and keeping it in another [faster access] place anyway while you're with the vehicle. #robLeatham ;-)

Anyone know what the hell this extra piece of foam is for? It was half folded inside the safe part but there’s a piece already in the bottom of both sides

I thought that maybe, but it’s nowhere near the right shape for the bottom of the console and has no holes for the bolts.

Since that lock is a Combi-Cam Ultra maybe you could contact Combi-Cam and see if they can send you a master key to get into it.
My bet is the combo was not zeroed out and the key provided is not the correct one.

Obviously that larger cam is going to be more robust, but I'll buy you a beer, make that a 6 pack, if you can get into the other one with just a large screwdriver. Maybe I'll buy another one if the $58 deal comes around again and do a break-in attempt and see exactly what it would take to get into it. I'll film it of course...

Don't you just have to bend the metal arm out of the way? The Toyota one has a slot on the lid side and the safe side. If I was going to attempt to breach the knock off I would take a hammer and smash the plastic knob off they use a punch and drive the latch straight down and off.
