Does anyone have an installed catch can that caught nothing within the span of, 11-ish months?
I installed one of those on my truck and it is roughly 11 months, no a single drop, though does smell of strong petrol if I sniff the can.
    Normal, or weird?

This was discussed a lot on the general supercharger thread. The newer radium design is terrible and does not catch anything. Better off with a cheap Amazon one or a J&L.

    Oh.....I'm not FI, just NA.....
Installed it just to see what it can catch..... My Taco fiend caught quite a bit from his brand new 2024 (back then) Subaru Outback Wildness.....

Sniffing cans? @hagrid. Maybe you have an opinion on this behavior.:eek2:

Yeah, unfortunately it doesn’t matter whether it’s FI or NA the newer design Radium catchcan doesn’t seem to work too well. Some have modified it with some steel wool with success. I could try and find that post for you. I think it was @PolishedTRD that was the first to modify his.

Radium and big name cans are an absolute waste of money. Buy one of the many $30 Amazon options from Evil Energy or whatever, does just as much if not more than a name brand can and looks just as good imo

My catch cans caught nothing until I altered them. Even then only the can attached to the PCV valve does anything - the can attached to the valve cover ports is pointless.

Looking at that Radium link, it looks like the design has slightly changed from what I have. I ended up gutting my catch can lids and added stainless steel Scotch Brite pads inside the cans. The can connected to the PCV valve now actually catches.

Here are my posts about it in the general supercharger thread. 1 2

Catch cans are beer cans with steel wool. Do not fall for the crazy prices and marketing on them.

Not all catch cans are the same.

200 miles of pretty easy driving. I don't want this 5W-50 in my intake...or on top of my intake valves (DI).

    Indeed.

I do not sniff cans. I sniff buckeyes and starfish. It is a worthwhile pastime that I recommend to all with a Tundra and a mast mounted radial array transmission cooler.

I wish I could find the picture I took of my old L83 Silverado. 168k miles of no catch can. Almost no build up on the valves at all. Direct injected. It’s not the issue the internet makes it out to be.

Whilst I'm inclined to agree, ze germans have responded with, "hold my bier".

I've seen many BMW and Merecedes engines with coked intake valves. Not personally, via the youtubes.

Maybe or maybe not. I do know several BMW owners that have received misfire CEL codes under 50K miles without catch cans. BMW actually has a walnut blasting maintenance schedule for this reason alone. Regardless, my CC's stopped oil from going into my SC. Good enough reason to justify it.

I did a PCV re-route on my diesel too. When I popped off the intake plenum to the turbo my compressor wheel was nicely coated. My charge pipes were as well. 25K miles later, that has been resolved.

Personally I don't mind the cost or added maintenance. If the one can caught that much oil in 200 miles...imagine in 3000K miles between oil changes?

My "new" Radium wouldn't catch anything until I modified it. I went a bit further than just steel wool and added a bypass port cover sleeve AND more wool. I posted in the SC thread about it.

Now it finally catches some goo.

This was how full my Amazon one was after a single drive the other day. Fat ring gaps, new engine still sealing, and seeing 20psi of boost every few minutes :D

Yeah, I would say that's a sound investment. You can get some really cheap CC's that work well.

So, help me understand some more, the CC is not catching mainly due to not enough pressure build up to "push" the blowby into the can and actually making the CC work as intended?
My Taco fiend said his Type R Civic caught quite some as well, but from my limited knowledge, those are all FI, not NA.
I have no issue with it not catching anything, if the pressure buildup was lacking therefore, not catching.

But looking at some of those pictures, I might need to take the whole thing apart and figure out this "steel wool" thing.

When Radium redesigned their can to have an overflow float ball valve, they inadvertently allowed it to bypass and not condense in the can. Vapors come in and immediately go out without anything to help them drop out of suspension in the air. This is where the steel wool or a sleeve to force the flow to never bypass, comes into play.

Ah. So the valve ball has to be removed in order to not have it "bypass" the can? If that's the case, guess the easiest fix would be the steel wool to "force" it to condense.

Check post #10 above, he posted links that have photos and help explain the simple fix. Mines buried in there months later and involved a copper tube sleeve in addition to steel wool.

I give the tube some thought, might try that later, steel wool sounds a bit easier.

This one? Just discovering this mod. I’m not boosted (NA). Is this worth my time? Will this one get the job done for $35? The Radium is almost $300 and seems not to work according to other posts.
