I've got a road bike, but I just put mine in the back seat.

That is one of the best solutions I have seen. Now if you could make a version that could be easily removed from the bed, I'd pay $$$ for it. I'm clumsy sometimes and know I'd run into that dang thing when the bikes weren't mounted.

Thank you! I too thought of the issue with running into it so i rounded the corners and so far i havent had any issue. I tucked them as close to the truck as possible. Ill probably make a similar version that bolts to the inside channel and lays flat on top of the bedrail instead of a bedrack attachment which i could do custom as well for different style racks if needed. The flat version should work with tonneu covers, i built a custom bedrack to work with a sliding cover and it was slick!

I recently made a rail/rack system that is compatible with my roll up cover. It is currently setup for 2 bikes although the rack is removable so you could fill it up with 4-6 more bikes if needed.

That's a great system! I use a similar two rail setup with a cover now, but if I ever end up buying a kayak or canoe again I'm definitely stealing this idea and creating a modular aluminum frame I can set on top of the rails. Very nice.

I'm going to try and find someone to work with on making the brackets for others to purchase.

Not sure the exact model number or name, but I have the one that has velcro straps for 7 bikes. At the time I bought it, it was the larger of the two sizes offered.

My preferred way is over the tailgate pad, but I'm wanting to get an ARE camper shell... Not sure I'd want to leave the hatch up while driving.

When I've got a few friends and all our camping gear, I used to own a LOLO Rack but recently sold it to get a North Shore 6 Bike that folds.

For you guys running the tailgate pads, is there room to have a hitch haul in the trailer receiver with the wheels hanging over the back? Looking for a cheaper solution to carry 4 bikes but I’ll need the hitch haul to carry some stuff for camping since I’ll be losing bed space.

I think you could make that work without much issue. A thinner tailgate pad like a Dakine would allow the wheels to turn more and be more flush with the tailgate leaving you more clearance for the hitch hauler.

Thanks! Two of the bikes are kids so the wheels will be higher too. I’m thinking if I put them in the middle and the adult bikes on the outsides I’ll be ok. Thanks again for the input.

When I run the tailgate pad and still want to use the hitch (for an additional bike rack), I use an extender to move the rack further away from the tailgate, because the wheels would hit. Depending on what you are hauling, you might not need to do that. Plus if you are hauling anything heavy, the extender might not be as strong as you need.

Good call on the extender. I’m hoping I won’t need that though. I would just be putting a heavy duty plastic bin that holds sleeping bags etc. it about as tall as a cooler. I think it would be ok without an extender.

I like this. I have cheap beach cruiser bikes that this would work well with. What size PVC did you use?

One more question for the tailgate pad. Have y’all had any scratches to the tailgate??? That scares me the most about buying one. For now, I’ll only be using this occasionally. Thinking if I clean the tailgate before use and maybe add some more protection (like a Pool noodle between the bike and pad) I’ll be ok.

@RW-3 you should just install some clear vinyl like Xpel and you won't have to worry about scratches.

This is so true. I use to do both. Went with bass fishing and hiking. Looked at bikes today. It may have been a bad idea.

Nah, I take mine off occasionally and it looks good. The backside of my Raceface pad is a soft material so that probably helps. The only part my tailgate that's been scratched in over a year of use, is where one of the bike tires was rubbing directly on the paint on a bumpy fire road shuttle.

Thanks for the info everyone. Ended up buying the Dakine pad. The Race Face seem to have really bad reviews of tailgate straps breaking right out of the box and the bike straps turning to dust in a couple months. Dakine seemed to have less of those. We shall see.:fingerscrossed:

That looks like a killer product. I’d be buying this if I wasn’t running triple crown forks.

Fair enough. I seem to end up three bikes max anyway. Seems hard to line everyone’s time up at once for a team ride. Although I suppose it wouldn’t work so well for the family’s bikes.
