Ok..... so as most of you know I've been on AD orders with the military while my knee is getting fixed. They will soon be coming to an end and I'll be having to go back to my civilian job soon.

While being on my orders I've have fallen in even more love with the time I have been able to spend with my kids. That being said, being a Correctional Officer that works 3rd shift doesn't give me that time with my kids....and since I've been gone for over 2 years of their lives in the past 4 years and missed a lot.....I want/need a change. Not only that....I'm kind of burned out on it.

I am looking for a job that allows me to not be working shift and having weekend off (since that's when most things happen with kid activities) and pay needs to be decent (nobody but me taking care of bills in my house since I'm a single mom).

Do any of you know if any places hiring? I have one member who gave me a place to look, but I don't put all my eggs in one basket. Any recommendations or thoughts are welcome.

Honestly? I dont know....I just want somwthing that keeps me engaged and challenges me. I've been a military cop for 20yrs and I have 15 years supervisor experience and about 7-8yrs managerial experience. I have knowledge in many areas within that time too.... supply, dispatching, admin etc.

I know it's tough to get in, but how about local PD department; not as a cop, but in the office? I'll ask a guy here at the office and he did military logistics and may have some contacts.

Are we willing to relocate. The Navy Yard here in Portsmouth, Va is hiring, and with your military time, that is a bonus. :D

Look into government work. You get veterans preference when applying. Pay may not be glamorous to start, but job security is priceless.

I'd say if you haven't already, get a linkedin acct. A lot of Veteran resources to utilize and Veterans to network with. The premium access is free for military! If your serious about a career change you might be eligible for voc rehab and get paid to go to school for your new career of choice.

Police dept would be great, even a crashing guard job, or resource officer I'm a school.

Willing to go to school for 2 years? I love my schedule as a nurse, if you don't need insurance benefit then you could have an amazingly flexible schedule as an RN.

DOD? it's almost as if they hire vets solely because they're vets and find a place for them. not that i'd know or anything...

take a look at security departments in big aerospace companies. Lockheed has a huge plant down near you. the pay is top notch, but you work for the feds essentially, that's if you wanna work for the man.

It's shift work though and I'm trying to get away from shift work. Its nearly impossible yup be a single mom with no family in the area to work shift work.

ehhh, idk about shift work. i just have to put in 80 hrs. every two weeks, in any fashion. trust me, it's VERY lenient, i can "work" at home as much as i want. i just go to work for tests and face time. i'm also an engineer so...

ohhh i see what you mean. i meant company securities, not security guard work. more cyber, intranet, customer relations etc.

There are a few per diem RNs I work with and they pick up shifts when they can, ranging from 4 to 12 hour shifts, sometimes I'm lucky enough to grab up a 9a-3p or 11a-3p shift and my kid has no clue I was ever even at work I drop her off and pick her up and work while she's in school. Dr's offices urgent cares, and especially walk in clinics are always looking. Especially for part timers, you could get a 3 day a week job at a walk in and still do per diem elsewhere. Around here per diem RN pay ranges from $40-60 per hour for non critical care positions.

I’m in Minnesota right now staying at a resort on Otter Tail Lake. They hire people to work at the resort and it looks like offer them a place to live as well. Probably wouldn’t pay the greatest but it would be a sweet ass gig and your kids would have a blast.
