Canadian Prices 2022 Tundra

So I was able to take out a 2022 Tundra Limited yesterday. Here are my first thoughts. I am looking to buy a Limited TRD or Platinum so this was not the model I am looking for but I will still give my opinions.

Exterior.
This truck looks good but this model looks a little plain.
The wheels are standard Toyota with car like tires ( not aggressive at all). Remember I am looking for more of an aggressive look.
The tailgate button is a good feature, the tailgate drops nicely. When closing it sounds tinny. Like an old truck. Would have thought it would have been much more solid in feel and sound.
This truck did not have running boards. From what I have been told there is only one option for running boards in Canada. The power running boards are not available even in the Platinum from what I have been told.

Interior
The softtex seats are nice and comfortable. They seem a little soft compared to full leather seats. The quality was good, not great. I was hoping for more.
The infotainment system is awesome. I love the 14" screen. I was thinking it might be overpowering but it is not. It looks great.
The heated seats are great, nice and warm, almost hot.
the heated steering wheel is not adequate at all. Even on a not very cold day it barely got lukewarm. That will need to be fixed.

Drive
The drive was great, I like the power. it was smooth and instant. There was no turbo lag that I could feel. You hit the throttle and it was there. Lots of passing power on the highway for sure.
The braking was good. Nice feel. good braking power.

Over all, I like the truck. I don't like how the Canadian models are being set up. Lack of options available for us. Not sure who is making the decisions but in my opinion they are a little off the mark. If it is true that the Platinum does not have power running boards on it and not available seems a little strange to me. I am waiting till I see one. The dealerships don't have a great deal of information. This is a little strange as well. I think the release of this truck could have been handled better.

I am still waiting on confirmation for some information. when I get it, I will update this post.

 

Thanks for the report. Canadian contents are definitely lacking, requiring to pay $65K+ in order to get the front camera is ridiculous. The person(s) responsible for packaging our contents should be fired.

 

I've heard that the heated steering wheel was inadequate. How is the interior sound level compared to the old Tundra?

 

I currently do not have a Tundra, My uncle who did the test drive with me and is looking for one as well, previously owned a 2015 Limited( I believe). He said the noise was maybe a little more than his last one but comparable. The new Platinum supposedly has noise suppression in the floor.

 

Has anybody seen 2022 sr5 cloth seats?

If I build one on toyota canada website, I see totally different looking cloth seats.

 

That is not very good. Last gen tundra was one of the loudest 1/2 pickup I have ever driven.

 

Thanks for your review. I got similar impressions with the exception of the turbo lag that for me was quite pronounced with a bit of a delay in acceleration.

 

If you watch the TFL towing video - during WOT uphill it recorded 61-62 Decibels which they say it's the lowest in any truck they tested.

 

I didn't think they were at WOT when they did that test? I thought they were cruising at 60mph. I admit I didn't watch the entire video though.

 

maybe not WOT - but they always test uphill in an area where it should be the loudest

 

I drove an SR5 today. It did sound like the window was open a crack when cars went by. The road was wet so it was louder but it did seem like there was a leak somewhere for noise to get in. Did not notice it cruising at 100 on the highway though.

The interior was great. All materials were high quality and well put together. The armrest is at the perfect height and shifter perfect position. The truck is way bigger than I was expecting. I drive several trucks at work, the biggest being an F350 dually and this feels like the hood is higher on the corners. Seems a bit too obstructive. The windshield seems a bit short and lower in the middle like the headliner is sagging. Back window is also short. The 8 inch screen is just right for size and the chrome on the dash is dark so everything seems to blend well inside.

The new Tundra is very smooth and fast. I noticed a little turbo lag from a dead stop especially when turning out of parking lots. Takes bumps fairly well. I have 3 Ford Expeditions at work with the 3.5 twin turbo, the newest being a 2021 and this engine and transmission from Toyota is way better. Smoother and stronger feeling acceleration. The head engineer said it was programmed to emulate a diesel and I agree. The power comes on at very low RPM and feels like a diesel with 500 pounds of torque.

I have been back and forth on the new Tundra and 4Runner. Above all else I want long term reliability so it's hard to not give the 4Runner the nod. If I were guaranteed the same reliability I would probably go with the Tundra. Tough decision.

Because of what my 2018 truck is worth on trade I have been back and forth on the Tundra and 4Runner as well. Owned a couple late 90's 4Runners and liked them alot. I needed more space. The current 4Runner has a lot more cargo space now. Their payloads are close enough. But there is "stuff" that goes into the bed of my Tundra that I would not want to, or cannot put in the 4Runner. So getting a trailer becomes a requirement. And not needing a trailer was one of the big points in having a Tundra. If I had a work vehicle to borrow that would solve that issue.

 

The 4Runner is great but its smaller, has less features, old infotainment tech, similar mileage, less truck capability, etc.

I guess you have to ask yourself what things are stopping you from getting a Tundra, and then ask if the 4Runner actually has them available.

Of you're not liking the Tundra because it isn't absolutely perfect, then you need to realize the 4Runner is far from perfect as well...and a new 4Runner is apparently coming, too.

For context, I've owned a 4runner. They're great vehicles, dont get me wrong.

no, didn’t say I was looking for perfection in the new Tundra. I think it’s better than I expected. In the end the unknown reliability of the new tundra engine swayed me. I was comparing the 4Runner off-road to the tundra TRD off-road. The 4Runner off-road has a couple more options than the tundra at very similar price point.
I ordered a 4Runner today. I don’t think anyone will be disappointed in this tundra. I plan on putting a lot of miles on it so I was concerned the turbos might be gone before I’m done with the vehicle.

 

I noticed in the pictures of the 3" lift for the Tundra that the Tonneau cover they had on it looked familiar. It's made by Bakflip now which is what I've put on 3 of my Toyota Trucks. It's pretty much the best you can get. I haven't checked pricing from Bakflip for the 22 but it should be around $1350 which is what it was for the 21 or $1857 if you add it as an accessorie lol. It's not hard to install.

 

Has anyone confirmed what type of materials for the seats in the SR5 trim ?
When I look at Key Features it says Softex Leather but when I compare trims it says Cloth !

I now man, but we are not in the US aren't we ? They get a lot more than we do like air suspension and tow mirrors plus more. I think they gave us a fully loaded SR5 as a Limited.

 

I believe that the prices are lower though if we convert. Plus dealers are not selling over MSRP. BTW they started to get crazy here too - a Ford Dealer in my area is charging 5% over MSRP for everything + a mandatory $4000 package with protection and few other things. No wonder why they have stock of everything including 5 Broncos (only 12K over )

 

Not sub par prices, those are always sky high for less.

I think you're correct ! I thought the same thing after watching another video tonight on the SR5 Offroad with Softex and 14" screen.

 

Congrats! 4Runners are sick! They're such an under the radar badass vehicle, although they have become more popular in recent years.
