Went for a hike and bike last night with a bud. Did a couple of runs to work the bugs out for the mountains (Valemount) on Saturday :D. First time this season on a mountain due to covid. I am stoked.
Seems like a Canadian nuff post.

Thanks man. It’s a newer un-sanctioned trail near town, it got logged 2 years ago, and is just about back where it used to be but with wide open views now :) makes for an exciting visual experience

Jelly. I miss the west. Think about it everyday. The drive north of the lakes is long but Northern Ontario is beautiful and rather unappreciated i find. Most people in my parts have never been past Sudbury. Ive done Collingwood to Golden in 3 days on time for supper, but with kids probably 4 at best. Post some photos, im itching to get back, havent seen my little brother since i left.

I have a 3500 lb travel trailer. I absolutely feel it. It has the aerodynamics of a brick with a sail!

Does anyone know much about the Pembina River campground in Alberta? Considering visiting it but I hear it's party central and not super family friendly. Any insights are appreciated.

A friend of mine recommended the Entwhistle campground on the Pembina River. Not sure if that's the same one. He's in his 50s or 60s so definitely not party central. It might depend when you go, though. I think he said last time he went they stayed there Sunday to Thursday or Friday and there was only one other site occupied. But of course it could be different this year with everyone seemingly getting out.

I will. I'm down in london so I'm a good deal further. If MN wasn't closed it would make the logistics easier. But now I have to get through MN in one go so I have to make it from ON to SK in one go.

I have a 4000lbs dry TT about 4500 when loaded. When I had my blue truck, sometimes I forget it was back there until I looked at my mirrors lol.

I'm super sensitive to every little thing on vehicles. On any vehicle I have owned I can notice even an extra 50lbs in the car. Blessing but more of a major curse as I OCD easily when something isn't right and fix it fast (great for people who buy my used vehicles though!).

So for me, I never forget I'm towing a trailer. Especially when the RPMs go up.

I got to say that I find the Tundra really easy to back up with a trailer. Considering I'm not towing every week, I'm getting better and better at sliding into those tight campsites without scraping anything.... at least so far!

What I particularly enjoy is the guilt trip they take you on for no additional charge. The cleaning reminders at a cadence my insurance won't pay for. And I said no to purchasing a $500 night guard that I know I wouldn't wear and didn't really need - wow. It was like I was telling a grandma you can never see the kids again.

It's not that bad to make that - If I'm not pushing I do that easy. Dryden to Regina/Saskatoon is around 7 hours only, 10 hours from Thunder Bay. Only reason pushing it would be an issue is I stop in Winnipeg since it's roughly 12 hours from Sault Ste. Marie and 12 hours to Edmonton.

I actually prefer going through Canada, and it's all because of Chicago. Maybe if I drove it more it wouldn't be an issue, but I prefer the 401 through Toronto over Chicago. And going through the UP of Michigan is not any better than Northern Ontario.

Ya, Chicago is an idiot pit. The wife and I call the state ill-annoyed. The idea of stopping people every 75 feet to collect a dollar or so (thus costing more gas than they're charging in tolls and slowing everyone down) is so stupid it beggars belief.

So, going out, I'll be doing two hops to get to Thunder Bay or so, then to SK then to Banff.

I didn't notice any issues in Chicago when I was there for a week in December (though I may be lucky it didn't snow). I also rented a compact car and didn't have a trailer.

Stayed in Joliet. Drove to Channahon each day for my training course then into Chicago each evening for dinner. People there seem to be what some folks refer to as "professional commuters". Much easier to merge onto the highway there, for one thing.

No shit. A couple years ago they were all horny to pull my wisdom teeth. Not just a grab and yank procedure, a full on sedation with cutting and breaking the teeth up to extract them operation. Probably almost a week off work for recovery. When I asked why I was told they were impacted (buried under my other teeth). Ok, but they're not causing any issues or causing any pain. Apparently they were worried that they might. Well, that's nice but again I'm not having any issues and we can cross that bridge if we get there. They just didn't want to take no for an answer and only after serious pressing did they admit that it wasn't really required.

Time to find a new dentist.

The last guy I went to see was always offering me cosmetic surgery because he claims my front teeth are crooked. The dentists at the clinic I go to now don't ever suggest any kind of extras.

Oh I did. I went in for a check up and cleaning because at the time I hadn't seem a dentist in 5+ years. They said I had 13 cavities. This office had come recommended as The Woman had been using them and after going as long as I did without a check up I had them deal with it. All this despite only ever having 1 cavity in my life previously. Never did do the cleaning. I had pain and temp sensitivity for about 8 months after that work.

Found out afterwards that the dentist who did my work was new and ended up being fired not long after my stuff due to multiple complaints and shoddy workmanship. So yay for that. The Woman still likes going to that office though since she has the good doc in there, but I'm on the hunt for a new one. Still damned leery of dentists though. Zero trust.

The Woman just had a filling fall out last night and they discovered some rot in the tooth and she needs a root canal. $2800 of my $3500 health spending account is now gonna be used up...

My father in law can't understand why I don't want to use their 250hp Larson speed boat.

This is why. No people. No noise. No maintenance.

Solo paddle in Ontario. Did some fire road driving in the Tundra with one of the boys, a little 4x4 on a quad track and stuff my wife wouldn't approve of.

Good Looking Canoe. I love the wood gunwales.

    Here's mine, a Ranger 15':
    20200524_141542.jpg

I take it with me everywhere we go camping, but this picture was taken on an urban river, The Seine River in Winnipeg, during a solo paddle.
My next big trip with it will be a canoe packing trip down the Manigotagan in Eastern Manitoba. 70kms in 3-4 days. It's a whitewater river, but every rapid has a portage, which we'll be using except maybe for a few Class I's that we deem runable without taking any damage. I'd like to get a second canoe in the coming years, one made out of Royalex, probably a Prospector 16 or 17', that I can expedition and whitewater in, without worrying about punching a rock through the hull

I can't say the same 'no maintenance' about my canoe as you can about yours, though. Every 2 years it needs a sand and a couple coats of spar varnish, inside and out. The canoe gets scratched up from use (nudging rocks, branches, getting dragged out of the water, etc.) and varnishing helps fill in the scratches, restoring the beauty of the canoe, as well as adding UV protection from the sun.

@GreatBigAbyss I refinished my wood for the first time this year. Maybe not maintenance free but definitely easier than a boat to maintain and I can jump in and paddle in minutes when camping and not worry about fuel or if the skeg is buried

I've done a bit of paddling on the Seine as I am in Winnipeg. I think that is where Paddle MB used to meet for a weekly paddle during the summer, down at LaBarrier park.

    Ah, you're in Winnipeg? Nice.

We just got back from our annual Rushing River camping trip. This year we had a waterfront site on the North Side of the campground. I could wake up at 7AM every morning before the family woke up, and go for a solo paddle while the water was like glass, and the campground was quiet. It was so easy as my water access was a mere 25' from the front of the camper, lol.

Awesome! Beautiful vessel and country. Thanks for the pictures. :)

I grew up on a lake in ON & miss the great canoeing everywhere. Over 20 years later... One of the few things I still miss from the east.

I like both. My parents have 12' kayaks that we take around the lake. Can't waterski behind a canoe or kayak, though.

We do a week with the family and trailer and my boys and I usually get out a couple more times in the tent at Rushing River. We always get waterfront for the reasons you started. Plus nothing beats lunch, suppers and fire over looking the water or right on it. The North Side is primo tenting spots. Right now we are in Blue Lake Ontario, just north of Vermillion Bay.

Looks like you had a wonderful spot, with swimming access to Blueberry Island. We like to kayak out there, then on the the bigger island to explore and let the dog run around free and have a snack.

Here are a few select pics of this weekend at Rushing River. Some of the canoe, some of the Tundy! We had 4 families sharing our site and using it as water access. My buddy John (he has the kayaks) and his two boys were camping on our site with us, while two other families were camped elsewhere but would hang out at our site and left their rental canoes with us. Because water access.
