You'd think so right? All the white collar folks in the company got the whole week off. Nope, us hourly wage slaves had to work. Never mind the fact that while for once the shop is ahead of the game, the draftsmen and engineers are up to 3 weeks behind on drawings which will force us in the shop to work insane overtime to meet delivery deadlines.

I'm so done with this job...

That's what I did this year, first time ever. Looking forward to not going go work again next week. Used up a couple personal days and one week of annual leave and get two weeks off

Happy New Year everyone. Stay safe if you're heading out

@Outbound at least you’re getting a pay check. I know a few guys that our company laid off end of December can’t seem to find work.

Yeah, I definitely count myself lucky in that respect. 2020 is shaping up to be stupid busy for us. GP seems to be a little bit insulated from the recession so far *knock on wood*. It helps that our shop pretty much only supplies US based operations and does almost no business in Canada anymore.

I realize I'm totally out of place here since I'm a CO boy, but when I drove up to Anchorage in Nov 2011, I went up thru BC, Yukon, and over to AK thru Beaver Creek check point. Came back the same way the following August except down thru Alberta. On the way up I met great Canucks. The economy seemed to be going quite well. I saw so much fracking going on and other petroleum/nat gas operations going on. I even came across some Yanks at Pink Hill while getting gas on the way back. They were contracted with Cal Frac making big $. WTF happened??? Sorry to infringe...

In a nut shell, politics. For 4 years we had a provincial party that was generally anti-oil/gas. We're going into year 5 of a federal government that is not only anti-oil/gas but also anti-western Canada. Increased corporate taxes, increased restrictions on resource extraction and a myriad of other bad governmental decisions have put this country, and Alberta especially, into a recession. 2010/11 and up to 2015/16 were boom years. I can get more specific in PM if you want since we avoid politics on this site. LOL

Grande Prairie fortunately is primarily natural gas focused and as such has dodged some of the crude oil crash. Fort McMurray and other parts of Alberta have been badly hit due to being based around oil. The company I work for does 98% of our business in Texas, Pennsylvania and the Dakotas supporting fracking down there. We're also just starting a project which, if it goes well, will see us breaking into the Argentinian gas fields. The remaining 2% is rental units for the few companies basically maintaining operations in Canada. Next to no expansion is happening.

I will PM you so we don't violate here. I have a question for you anyways. By the way..I when I was up in AK, the global warming conditions were so bad that there was record snow/coldness in Anchorage.....heh...heh..

Took the old snow scooter out for it’s first rip of the season today. Got up above the clouds / fog for a while, too bad the snow conditions weren’t great and all the riding areas were pounded out by heavy usage. Still beats sitting on the couch anyday.

Very nice. I've only every ridden a sled on the fields in Sask. Always wanted to try alpine sledding. I already have enough expensive hobbies though. LOL

I ride an old ‘02 Summit 600, and yeah, it was the “vintage” machine up there today. LOL.

I ride a lot of snowed in logging roads and access an old cabin for an overnight stay a couple times a year. It’s pretty cheap fun for me.

Today was my first time up into “real sledding” territory, and to be honest I was underwhelmed. Far to busy, and everywhere you went it was thoroughly beaten down from heavy traffic. Add a $25/day trail fee...

It's been so mild and spring-like here with snow melting, above zero some days etc that I've been wondering where winter was.

    Found it.

I was just looking outside this windy morning thinking “it’s so nice people don’t have to crawl out of a teepee/tent anymore on a morning like this”. I’m sure none of us can imagine what’s it’s like to freeze to death!

I've been hypothermic once. That's as close as I care to get with regard to understanding freezing to death. God bless central heating.

We’ve been getting pounded with snow for the last week+.

I just had my snowshoes on so I could scale the 7’ snowbanks on either side of my driveway and shovel them back further into the yard. Now I have to dig out the Tundra and the snow machine and I’m done until the snow quits tonight.
