    Absolutely. I’d never discourage a guy from getting his Jman if the opportunity is there. But I’d also never encourage a guy to leave a position under a skilled mentor to go to school. On the job training is still the best. Depends on a guys drive, personality type and what opportunities come up.

    Thanks everyone for the info and encouragement. It's interesting that carpentry isn't as regulated as welding. In welding. you don't get much of a raise until you progress up the apprenticehip ladder. We have one guy who has about 12 years in the trade, but has never gone to school. He's a hard worker and a decent welder, but he's still making less than I was as a 2nd year. If he wants a raise, he has to go to school.

    If it comes down to it, I'll definitely check out some local construction companies. If I can move up the ladder without having to go to school, I'd like that a lot. I'd totally be ok with a company hiring me on at say $18 or $20 per hour with the condition that I prove myself within a couple months to get up to $25 with more advancement possible.

    To be honest, firefighting is my real end goal but there's no guarantee for that especially with how competitive it is. Starting another trade is more of a fall back, a way out of welding and another ticket under my belt. My dad was a carpenter before he got on the fire dept and I've always enjoyed working with wood. I can think of worse ways to earn a living. :D

    I don't plan to. It's been a dream since I was a child. I'm 30 now. Still lots of time to make it happen and have a 20 - 30 year career. :)
