I took the jump with this one. It’s a budget brand but it has the cold cutoff, etc and should be an easy replacement for my trailer.

    More Canadian randomness:

This week is the best time of the year for cell phone plans. So if your contract is up, brave the call in to your carrier to negotiate before Sunday.

I do the same with my phones. Buying outright always saves money.

I’m with Telus and changed the plan to $60 a month, 100GB shareable 5G in Canada, USA and Mexico. All the other typical add ons like visual voicemail, international texting, hot spotting, etc, included. No contract. Happy to stop switching sims in the USA now.

if roaming isn’t a big deal for you, I heard Fido is doing $30 for 50GB in Canada.

did you negotiate that in person? I tried online chat and they weren’t able to do anything other than what was posted. Your, deal sounds good. I travel a few times to,the us. Roam isn’t a dealbreaker.

I guess $45 for 4 GB from Koodo isn't as good a deal as it seemed 10 years ago.

Not so much anymore. You can either drop your monthly rate or get more for your money with a couple of calls.

There is. Fido has a $29 plan and Freedom has a bunch of lower cost ones including a year up front paid.

That's what I was thinking. Before COVID, I was contemplating paying a bit more to get a bit more data but now I don't get anywhere close to my limit.

Telus/Koodo are the only ones who have anything remotely resembling service at our lake lot and other spots in the middle of nowhere. We've tried Rogers and it's terrible out there. Not interested in giving Bell my money. The Freedoms/Virgins/whoever don't even have service in all areas of the major cities, let alone anywhere else.

I sometimes forget how big our country is and how much cell service we have compared to other countries. Yes, it’s cheaper in the UK, etc, but we have service in Rubber Boot Manitoba and downtown Calgary.

Try running dual sim for a month. Get a cheap carrier prepaid for $30 and see if you have service and the quality. I did this for years where my company paid for data but I wanted to keep my personal number. Works well on anything newer than iPhone 11.

i considered going the fido/freedom/virgin route but would rather my phone work when needed.
Everything I read said freedom is just awful for service.
Kudo is like $10 less than telus so I do not see the lure there.
I was offered 150g for $75 from telus, was the best I could get out of them.

I'm waiting for a provider to give me a proper deal. I need less than 10gigs of data, unlimited talk and text, voicemail. I'll bring my own phone.

Every company just offers more data for the same price. I want to pay less, not get more stuff I don't need.

Koodo has the same towers/service as Telus. But it was also more than $10 less when I switched.

i was at the mall recently, went to every cellular carrier and wasted their time.
Yes kudo is telus and fido is rogers. Pick yer poison.
They said telus can offer better discounts for home/cellular/home security which kudo cannot. Eveyone agreed that freedom is trash haha!

I have freedom, they are actually pretty good. Some Quebec company now owns them and they upgraded the service.

    Good to know
How is the service in crownland areas like Mclean? We are often in small town BC, do you get service there?
I was temped by freedom as I could get a new phone/plan for the price of just a plan at telus.

Outside of the major cities Freedom roams on either Bell, Rogers or Telus depending on the area so the problem usually isn’t rural coverage. I believe McLean area is on Rogers (from memory). But if you are roaming I think 5G is still blocked and the speeds are slower than the competitors for data on LTE.

The bigger problem with Freedom is still in the cities. Lots of dead spots and it won’t roam to other carriers areas where Freedom has spectrum licenses.

Quebecor (Videoteon) bought Freedom from Shaw as part of the Rogers and Shaw merger. They actually committed in writing to the Federal government that keep Freedom pricing at least “20% more affordable” than equivalent plans offered by the big 3. Great for the pocketbook but you’re paying less money for less network.

I have 5G where ever I go. That has been resolved too. Your roaming data is the same as your city data.

Outside of Calgary? Not sure how you would get 5G everywhere. Rogers and Telus aren’t covered.

I went all over BC this summer and had 5G coverage all over BC, including the island. While all over Alberta, zero issues with coverage.

I pay $25 for about 3GB from Lucky. It's enough for me (as well as wife and 2 teenagers) and we never go over our data.

There were some sweet deals on Black Friday. But they all involved 8000 GB of data, which I don't need, even for an extra $5/month.

RedFlagDeals is a good source for cell plan deal alerts and info etc.

    I'm cheap.

    Was at Costco today.

switched from virgin (67,a month 6 gig) to Fido. (30 a month for 50 gig)

37 a month cheaper. Didn’t really need that much data but didn’t,care.

all said and done saving 37 a month only cost me just over 600 bucks, lol. I hate Costco.

Boil some water in an electric kettle and put it in an indoor plant watering pot with a long neck. Get on the milk crate if you can't reach and pour away.
