Wife and I are pretty addicted to Kicking Horse coffee beans. We grind small batches at a time. Yum

    Yes, yes they do. LOL.

Kicking Horse is pretty good, especially fresh ground and sent through a french press. We like the Grizzly Claw and 454 Horsepower ones.

Next time you're in GP, check out Wapiti Bean Co. They're on the west end, near Costco. Old Smokes Coffee is another local one that's decent.

Damn. I'm swamped with appointments with Little AK today. Next time you come through, give me a bit of a heads up. If I'm in town I'll buy you a coffee (not Tim's, I promise :D )

For those going through Southern Alberta, this is arguably the best donut shop in the region. I’ve driven an hour just for the Friday fritters.

Kicking horse coffee was bought up by a big Italian company, still roasted in Invermere which is good. I like the decaf and half ass as caffine does weird things to me.
Big Mountain coffee is local Calgary roaster which is cool, but im no coffee snob so some may disagree. Its priced on par with Kicking horse and sold at co op.

Lots of nice places for hiking in summer and skiing/snowboarding in winter. Revelstoke. Golden. Panorama.

Kimberley is kind of a cool town but don't go on Mondays because everything is closed. Fort Steele for some history. Fairmont or Radium hot springs.

Touristy stuff or lesser known? What are your interests? Where are you based out of and how far are you willing to drive?

I grew up in BC and can point you to a few things.

We ar won Vancouver island but with the ferry system I’m not worried about it. This ferry system is amazing by the way.

The kids and I like Hiking, biking, kayaking basically anything outdoors except camping. The wife likes Hiking(ish) we all enjoy Historical kinds of things. On that note, I really wish they didn’t gut the Royal Bc museum as we absolutely loved that thing.

We went to Whistler for their first ever ski trip last weekend which was pretty great. That whole area is beautiful and the mining museum in the way is spectacular.

vancouver isn’t really our jam though. The suspension bridge is cool but the city itself is, well, like every other major city I’ve been to on the west coast.

Good food is always a plus!

Would like to see some of the touristy stuff and some of the not so touristy stuff

Having been there, and have at least one in my extended family ( and a few close seconds from Cape Breton) - Can confirm! they do, and all of us "mainlanders" talk too slow for them - we are slow talkers because, as they say, we are slow thinkers!! They dont talk fast, we listen too slow!! LOL
Fantastic salt of the earth peeps & lovely landscapes

    Why thank you!!

Yes it was Bullocks! it was funny seeing the menu in Japanese & English, catering to their very niche Asian market for Newlyweds conceiving under the Northern Lights!! 2/3 of restaurant was Japanese customers when I was there.

I gotta try the blueberry too!! 2 of my fav flavours, Blueberry & maple...Yum....and for sure baileys doesn't even grace my liquor cabinet anymore.

I would agree Montreal bagels - although I don't go there, there was a St Urbain in Thornhill that was Montreal style & they rocked

All this chatter has got me thinking of changing my Sept travel plans, and instead of the Trans Taiga, do the Que/ Trans Labrador route and ferry over to the Island & loop though Cape Breton & back....hhmmm Decisions!! LOL

LOL. You'll hate the ferry system soon enough. I don't know a single person from Vancouver Island that likes it. That'll add cost and alot of travel time but here's some ideas on the mainland.

I'd also recommend getting a copy of the Backroad Mapbooks for the regions you'll be travelling in. In addition to detailed maps they also have write ups of hikes, paddling adventures, campgrounds and historical sites. They're a great resource for planning a trip.

    https://www.backroadmapbooks.com/brmb-products/backroad-mapbooks/bc-backroad-maps.html

    Hiking:

    - There's the Grouse Grind which is right in Vancouver on Grouse Mountain. It's a steep climb but it can be done in under a day. Take the tram back down. Cypress Mountain is nearby. Both also offer decent budget friendly skiing (compared to Whistler).
    - Mount Cheam out east of Chilliwack is a good day hike. Lady Peak is right next to it, with a saddle between the two. Once you get to the saddle, you head up one trail to Cheam or another to Lady. A strong hiker could conceivably do both in a long day.
    - Stawamus Chief near Squamish is another great day hike with an incredible cliff view

    Paddling:
    - Manning Park, specifically Lightning Lake.
    - Kootenay Lake
    - Wells Gray Park has some great paddles. Murtle Lake is the largest canoe only lake in North America

    Historical:
    - Barkerville was the hub of the Cariboo Gold Rush. Lots of cool things to see around there.
    - Fort Langley has a museum which is neat to check out.
    - The Last Spike railway museum in Revelstoke. This is where the last spike of the Canadian Pacific Railway was driven in, completeing the railway across the country.

    More remote options:
    - The Bowron Lakes chain is a beautiful paddle. You can do day trips though I recommend a week and doing the full chain but if you don't like camping that probably wouldn't work.
    - Tumbler Ridge; this isn't far from me as it's up in the northeast corner of BC. Loads of fantastic hikes, including some gorgeous waterfalls like Kinuseo Falls. Dinosaur tracks too.

    Food:
    - If you pass through Cache Creek, stop in at Herbie's Drive-In. It's a old school grease stop, basically a heart attack in burger form. So good.
    - Fruit stands in the Okanagan, especially Keremeos. There's a place there called Gerry's Fruit and Veg. My uncle and aunt owned it years ago, not sure who owns it now though.
    - The Okanagan is home to dozens of vineyards, so if wine tours are your thing it's worth a trip.

    Other stuff:
    - Sturgeon fishing on the Fraser River. Considerd the "poor man's marlin", I recommend spending a day with a guide on the Fraser tangling with these dinosaurs. They grow to 12+ feet long and hundreds of pounds. Sturgeon Slayers is a highly reputable guiding outfit.
    - Whitewater rafting on the Thompson River. I've gone with Kumsheen Rafting and had a good time.
    - Hell's Gate in the Fraser Canyon. The mighty Fraser River hammers through a narrow canyon. The power of the river is incredible. There's a suspension bridge, tram and historical center too.
    - I've skied at Kicking Horse Pass in Invermere and loved it. I actually preferred it to Whistler. (The coffee mentioned above is named after the pass and roasted in Invermere).
    - The Okanagan in summer, especially Osooyos, is kind of like the California of Canada. Lakes, beaches, cooking hot in summer, hotties in bikinis, the works.

    Hope that helps!

A coworker from Nova Scotia told me mid to late October is the best time to go to Cape Breton.
