That’s a nice temp… though it would appear prince Rupert is in the middle of NOWHERE. I got my Confirmation of permanent residency a few days ago and we are heading to Vancouver island. At least that was the plan until I took a gander at the Covid housing prices. Holy hell…

Congrats on getting your PR! I am still waiting for mine. And yes, buying a home in Canada right now is very expensive compare to the US. Vancouver and Toronto are the two highest almost or even more than NYC, LA, and SF. I tough of moving to the big island a few years ago, but can not justify the cost or living. But my wife decided to go home to PE and the cost of living is about the same or even higher. The housing cost during the last year went up 125%. The houses you would not buy for $150K pre pandemic are getting bully bid over $350K. Mostly people fleeing from BC and ON driving the prices up here in the island. We bought a few acres by the ocean hoping to build, but the lumber prices and shortage in supply can not justify cost of the build. We decided to buy house instead to keep for a few years until everything goes back to normal. After 6 months of searching, we got lucky to found a private sale. We close Monday.

I am absolutely shocked at how much housing has appreciated during the pandemic. Houses in Canada have appreciated 38% and the Canadian dollar has advanced on the American dollar by 10 percent or so. The buying power of an American moving to Canada has collapsed. Houses in Hawaii have a median price of about a million US dollars now. I can’t figure out how people pay for these things. The only thing I can think of is real estate investment trusts and foreign money.

A friend of my wife bought land on PEI before the pandemic, right on the beach, and built herself a house. I wanted to do something similar in BC but that’s not going to happen with prices like they are.

I assume you’re waiting for an inland PR and you married a Canadian as I did?

You think Prince Rupert is in the middle of nowhere - may as well get cozy and we'll drive 15-24 hours to somewhere closer to nowhere lol. There's a lot of space once you get to Northern Ontario and go West, and not that many people really. 3 Hour car trip is short lol

The island I live on is 40 miles wide and 2500 miles from the next major landmass. It would be in the middle of nowhere if a million people didn’t live on it.:)

We still have money in the US and playing the wating game to see if how the USD/CAD will play out.

Your wife's friend lucked out and built before the price of lumber went up. The current build here is starting at $300 per sq/ft. This pre-pandemic was it started out as $125.

Yes, married to a Canadian. She decided to move back home, and I've been sitting idle for 8 months now. I now have a temporary number, but still need to get the OWP to get processed so I can start working again.

Guh, 300 a sqft is ridiculous. And sitting for 8months is crazy you must be losing your mind.

Been trying to buy a beater for my sons first car, at this point its honestly cheaper to lease a Corolla for 36 months.

Another day I saw someone asking 84k for a 4runner trd pro, I doubt anyone is that silly to pay that price.

And I found a new pet peeve, so there's this new federal rebate on retrofit your house with energy efficient appliances, which is great cause one of our houses uses ductless systems, and I see if I upgrade to the one I wanted which has 3 heads, heat pump etc you get 5k back, which the system costs about 8k when I last inquired back in Feb, now the system is about 11k to 12k installed, wtf.

Yep. I was dipping my toe in the market and seriously considering selling my truck to upgrade. Forget it. I'm out. Dumping money into my '05 and driving it for a few more years.

yikes, and that's a trail edition without any leds, I still remember I tried to get the last SX (unsuccessfully) in Ontario back in October, they wanted $48k + taxes, which is more or less the same as a Trail.

it's a trd off road, they are asking what I paid for my truck, I also found out in Canada, TRD Pro is listed as SR5, MTO wanted them to test it if it was going to be its own trim line so Toyota Canada just categorize it as an SR5.

I looked at over 15+ hoopties, most of them I wouldn't even pay more than $1000 for last year is now going for $3500.

Same thing happened when they had $1K Sump Pump rebates here in MB a few years ago. People at work who had them installed a month earlier paid say "$2K". New estimates were $3K and $1k rebate.

Numbers in example are all made up, but the rebate was a complete wash as the prices magically went up during the rebate period.

DC back seat has tons of room, it fits our Berner easily. And then you get a 6.5' bed. You'll be much happier in it.

One Caveat - I keep my TRD Pro wheels and new rubber lol

My canopy only fits the short bed. And my wife is addicted to the chesterfield in the back seat.

I'd settle for a standard box but I doubt I'm replacing my truck until my kids are big enough to run me out of payload anyway.
