I am not a prepper, nor do I get too heavy into conspiracy theories (unless at Thanksgiving dinner!) but recent events have shown me that so much more can happen remotely than I expect.

Let’s say there is an agent of chaos, whether domestic or foreign, that hacks into Toyota’s connection systems and wants to wreak havoc by disabling millions of vehicles across the US or Canada. It stands to reason if you can remotely start a vehicle that you can remotely disable it.

Just curious if anyone knows if it’s as simple as a pulling a fuse to make our trucks deaf to the outside world? Cuz if the world’s ending I’m going camping!

Probably easiest just to unplug the cell antenna. I think there are 2 of them. There is a fuse but it also disables some other things.

I saw a post recently (don't remember which one) that showed the three antenna connectors behind one of the dash panels to the left of the steering wheel. It should be easy enough to locate the connector bar and simply unscrew the antenna cables from their connectors. I would probably leave the one that the AM/FM radio is using.

I’m waiting for somebody to unplug them to see if the vehicle goes in to limp mode or throws egregious amounts of alarms, bells, codes, errors, etc..

I agree with your line of thinking, Dave.

    None….so far
Yes but that creates ford problems, and I don’t have time for that multitude of issues.

Disconnecting an antenna would be ideal so it doesn’t interfere with other systems

Pick a manufacturer from 1972, I dont think it really matters as long as you want to disconnect

Not all what anybody said in this thread except for you. We’re also not 3rd Gen bashing so no need to get defensive. We simply don’t agree with the idea or principle that the vehicle manufacturer could potentially disable a vehicle remotely for any reason, even if - and especially if - done by a foreign actor. Thus, we (papadave more than me) are looking for solutions to possible problem. Your solution is a solution, but not a viable one. So we are disregarding it. One could eliminate pain in a limb by dismembering said limb - a solution but not a viable one.

I don’t understand if you are casting shade on the possibility of such a thing happening, or one’s desire to not simply allow the pervasive overreaching in tech/manufacturing today. The latter is a larger discussion that is beyond the scope of this thread. The former being the premise and impetus this discussion, refuting such would be like sticking one’s head in the sand to avoid the chaos around them. OnStar, as an example, has demonstrated the ability to remotely manipulate the ability of vehicle to run and operate with technology several generations older than the current tundra platform. Unfortunately, it also demonstrates the abuses of trust and power one company will go to in order to drive up profits in exchange for the end users privacy.

Beyond the comical comments (seriously, I laughed at your first post as it was funny to me), have you anything helpful to contribute?

Even one better w/OnStar and I'm sure others...

Once an equipped vehicle is reported stolen or is logged in a serious crime or even during a 'welfare of the owner' situation, OnStar will work w/law enforcement on location, disabling, and even 'disabling and locking the doors on the occupant(s)' in certain circumstances... Most of this is with very good intentions, but the point that there is potential for overreach or other nefarious opportunities is definitely there and a reasonable concern.

Hell, I believe Tesla went as far as saying that if payments are missed on a vehicle, they have the ability to self drive it away from the owner and back to dealership or whatever... IE>>> repo

So, they're basically saying they'll take physical control of your vehicle 'remotely' over a civil dispute; just something to think about....

I’m stocking up on tin foil and installing a faraday wrap around the inside of my garage. If they really are after you, is it still paranoia? Seriously, I’m glad I have a 2015 without as much of the above mentioned technology.

The CIA has been suspected of taking control over vehicles and making them accelerate and crash when they want to get rid of someone. It used to be only high end cars like Mercedes had the capability but now it's pretty much every new vehicle.

Yep, still got my 02 LS430, 1999 Land Cruiser and 1997 4Runner manual...did put a modern bluetooth stereo in the Lexus but the Toyotas rock AM/FM CD and cassette ha ha...zero connectivity, zero bullshit. My battery died in the Tundra remote so I had to lock and unlock with hard key...truck was all confused beeping and bopping like crazy until it got a new battery and was all happy to be communicating again...man we are lazy

We require a search warrant for law enforcement to listen in on our land line phones, bur we allow SIRI, Alexa, and others to listen in on our daily lives. This is the convenience, and intrusions of modern technology. I am not sure whether or not the benefits outweigh the drawbacks.

I am aware that I can turn off SIRI, and I have the option of not inviting Alexa into my life, but we ought to be able to enable or disable any and all of these intrusions at will.

I really like my 2010 Tundra, very cool truck. But that electronic tether can me restricting. Apparently Musk shut down
that wack-job who militarized his Cyber truck with the push of a button. That's scary, not sure which is more, Musk or the Russian.
1987 Mechanical Direct Injection 12HT 60 wagon without radio. No electronics, at all. Over 3 weeks no contact.
Carry over 50 gal of diesel, which should be available when needed. EMP proof.

A FISA court will pretty much rubber stamp any warrant as long as investigators use the magical words "national security."

If you have any type of mobile communications device (“cell phone”, tablet etc), the data that the truck itself provides is the least of your worries.
