Can anyone talk me out of buying a new 3rd gen?

After I crashed my 2015 Tacoma I went truck shopping. 3rd gen Tundra fit the bill perfectly. Very happy with it.

I checked again: my CM back seat floors do not anger me.

    Ditto this.

And coming from an '18 Tacoma TRD Offroad... the Tundra is 10x the truck.

The Crewmax back seat is like sitting in a limo.

Look at what the Big 3 are doing and you'll have an idea on what Toyota will do on the next Tundra. I'll be very surprised if they get rid of a V8 option. V6 Turbo? I believe it but this is America and a full size truck has to have a V8 option. If you get a CMAX now, you're getting a truck that is proven. If you wait on the new models, who knows what bugs they'll have to work out over the years. IF you can find one you like, give it a shot. From what I read, dealerships are wanting Toyota trucks since they can't keep them on the lot / supply issues.

Im went from an 08 CM limited to a 18 CM Platnium and the back seats are fine. My kids have plenty of legroom and the best part was the car seat facing back and my oldest son still had room to walk between my seat and the car seat. Long rides in a cramped car truck or suv sucks. I rather a foot less in the bed and more leg room. If i need to take something bigger than the bed size i tow my trailer.

The issue with the back seat is the lack of adjustability and the lack of access to the little bit of storage behind the seat.

Older CM had recline and slide adjust like the front seats. Also, the space under and immediately in front the seat was open. Due to the supercritical foam transport compartment under the rear seat, you have to keep feet out in front of you. It is also awkward for kids to move from one side to the other because the slope is right where they want to put their feet. The floor mats on a newer CM back seat are smaller than on a Gen2 DC... Also, for kids, there is nowhere to store anything in the back seat area (other than on reduced floor space). Cant slide a back pack, spare shoes, diaper bag, wipes, etc under the seat because you have the precious foam compartment.

Cant easily put anything behind the seat because they don't fold forward or slide forward.

If you really want a CM, I would find the lowest mileage 2013 model. Kids will ruin it anyway.

Had a Gen2 DC with three carseats and would go back if I could do it all over again. If you have not gotten a chance to inspect a Gen2 CM, it is worth finding one and taking a look at how much was taken away with the newer version.

//Rant over. Just miss my DC.

I want the largest cab possible. Recline in the rear seat doesn't really matter to me since the kids are in car seats/boosters anyway. As for lack of inside storage, that's a problem with any pickup truck. Even with under seat storage, it's going to be lacking. That's why you get a DECKED system and/or topper for the bed.

Don’t get me wrong guys. I love my doublecab. By far my favorite truck I’ve owned. But I’m sick and fucking tired of cramped road trips. We are a family that travels a lot and need a full size vehicle and the wife isn’t giving up the 4Runner. It’s paid for and she loves it

Appreciate all the feedback. Lots of good opinions. I really like the 13’ crewmax idea

This kind of scenario is what pushed me to the CM over the DC in the first place. I know that if I ever need more bed space I can make up for it with a trailer, but there is no way to increase the cab space if you find you need more. I like road trips, and I prefer to drive, so the CM decision was purely for the comfort of any and all future passengers. That, and it's nice to have enough room that little legs can't kick the back of my seat!

I've never leased a vehicle in my life, but I leased my new Tundra for exactly this reason.

If the next generation truck is awesome, (big, powerful, loaded with Tech and fuel efficient) the 3rd gen values will take a dive. If the next gen is an underpowered, undersized turd, 3rd gen values will hold very strong. Via a lease, I pay a bit more in finance charges, but have zero risk on resale value.

I will add that based upon the residual values that Toyota projected for the trucks I considered over a 36 month lease, they are NOT expecting a significant fall-off in the used market for 3rd gen trucks.

Good point. I bought a 2011 F250 new off the lot. I spent most of its first year in the shop with all types of bullshit. I sold it and bought a 2010 f250. Then I my work bought me an ecoboost f150 when they came out. Same shit all over again

Pretty sound logic. The only thing I would add is that if the rumors of there being no V8 option in the new Tundra turn out to be true, then I think the 3rd gens will fair pretty well in resale value. Even if the new Tundra has everything else you are looking for, the V8 draw will keep the current trucks from taking too much of a beating, IMO.

Our last trip was West TX, NM, OK, AR, East TX and back home to West Texas. It was miserable. Oh and my 7 year old gets extremely hot and claustrophobic. He went through almost 50 throw up bags on that trip. I’m hoping the rear air vents and cab space with help him out

I will say the visibility for kids in CM is much better. Should help with the travel vomit. Never understood the wide rear window frame on DC rear doors. Blocks a lot of view.

IMO 2013 CM is close to a perfect truck for kids. Wish they offered it in SR trim (vinyl floors and seats). Going from 2014 DC to 2013 CM you will gain a handful of other smaller features as well (2nd glove box, more functional door storage compartment, drivers side O-Shit handle and a few others).

Dont forget to look for a front bench CM. Doesnt seem cool until you need another seat. In TX, you can put wife in bed but it is probably better to just get a six seater.

Also keep in mind, Toyota has started cutting even more corners on the 2019+

The whole rear window will roll down for him too. He can just stick his head out the back and :puke:all over the tailgaters! :fistbump:

This isn’t the best time to buy a truck with the current situation. I just traded in my 2017 and they’re selling it for what I paid for the truck brand new. Truck prices are $5-10k higher than they were a few months ago before the virus hit

I think this really boils down to each family's needs. It definitely sounds like the double cab is a great fit for you.

I have 2 older boys, the tallest being 6'8". Our family of 4 is all over 6' tall and we regularly taking camping trips in our travel trailer, so the crew max was the better option for us.

The real solution is a crew max with a long bed. I can dream, can't I?

Yes sir. I’m not turning loose just yet. I was looking around July 4th and prices were close to 10k lower like your saying. The value of my 2014 has gone up 5k

I've heard that, sort of. What I've heard (from 2 salesman and a mechanic) @ the local dealer is that they'll likely carry over the V8, and use it as a 'base model' engine, with the TT either available for extra $, or as the base engine for some of the higher trims (e.g., Limited on up).

I was in a very similar position last year when we were expecting our first. I had a 2012 FJ Cruiser, wife has a 2013 Tacoma - and we're both just too tall to properly fit a rear facing car seat behind us. I desperately wanted to keep my FJ, I loved that car - but the wife Green Lit me selling it, and getting a TRD Pro so I went for it. I do still miss the FJ, but I absolutely love this truck. I can't even imagine how much of a pain in the ass it would have been trying to get a baby in, and out of a car seat in the back of an FJ.

Do you have a spare vehicle to drive? If so then possibly you could consider selling your current truck while prices are inflated higher.

Then buying again when Things go back down

I predict 3rd gen values to go up after the release of the new tundra ... From a mechanical stand point , switching to a turbo v6 with direct injection will bring its share of issues ( at least for the first few years until they work out the bugs) .. Remember why the 3URFE 5.7L is so reliable ? Because its simple , it uses tried and true technology , Naturally aspirated port injection . Once the new gen starts having problems , people will want the 3rd gen trucks even more . That my prediction .
On the other hand , if anyone can make a reliable turbo v6 truck engine its Toyota . Hell even the 2020 ford ecoboosts are still riddled with problems .

Buy a 3rd gen and be proud driving the most reliable 1/2 ton on the road !
