Ok. Thanks. I have no idea what a cam tower is. I guess I have some reading to do on the 5.7.

If you have the 5.7, don’t pay someone to change your timing belt. It doesn’t have one.

    Oiled to last!
Here’s is my opinion, at the end of the day your decision will be what your most comfortable with, my guess is that there was no oil pan leak, it was the seepage from the cam tower leaks, I would use 5w30 high mileage oil, they have special additives to help old failing gaskets, and 5w30 is not going to be that significant a change to cause a oil pressure change. I have a 2010, they were leaking at 80k approx. my first thought was not to fix it, Toyota service advisor actually agreed with my decision, dealer quote was $4k so your quote is correct, then I realized it was covered in my warranty so I decided to go ahead and do it, mine smelled too but I oil the underbody every fall and just assumed it was that but after I had the towers fixed, no more smell. The repair was good, truck runs the same, can’t even tell the motor was opened up, I did have to go back because one of the coolant hoses was leaking but that’s it…I did pay out of pocket to replace the cam phasers and chain tensioners just because they had to remove them anyway and I don’t believe in replacing old parts when you have the chance to replace them with new ones, in conclusion, if you don’t feel comfortable dishing out $4k, don’t do it, you’ll be fine with the oil mentioned above, that was my plan if I didn’t have the warranty, and if you decide to do it go with the dealer, they have the most experience and the right tools and resources then any independent mechanic, hope I eased your mind and best of luck.

Spotted on the drivers side wheel well of the 2012 5.7 iforce - 167,000 km. Is it the beginnings of the cam-tower leak?

^Clean the area as best you can and recheck after a period of time to see where the fresh oil if any is coming from.

Then you'll have a better idea of where and how much it's leaking. At that point see if it's even worth being concerned about and will give you better piece of mind if it turns out to be minor seepage.

But yes, it's past the beginning of an oil seeping from cam tower area.
