Tech at the Dodge dealership “test” drove my truck for 3 days and 150 miles. I noticed once they picked me up in a customers car to give me a ride back to the dealership. I called corporate and the dealership manager and came unglued on them for using customers vehicles for running errands, driving home and back, picking up customers, etc. They were not happy and it stopped that day.
It’s total BS to do shit like that.

Decided to take a peak today to see if I could spot anything. Looks like I may be a winner as well. 2016 @ 55k miles. I guess I get to make some phone calls now.

Passenger side rear looks a little sloppy.

Yep, looks to me to be on the left side of the picture and that it's been dripping on to the heat shield too.

Mine looked exactly like that before I got it fixed under warranty. Hasn't leaked a drop since.

Just got it.. better tyres: BF Goodrich Ko2 275/70R18 Hopefully going to get a proper suspension lift soon.
Have my 2017, 5.7L with just over 123k km. Kept smelling oil 2 months after getting the oil rust proofing done. Looked under the wheel well and spotted fresh pull near the valve cover on both sides, closest to the cab. I will have extended pt warranty and will be attending the dealership on the 4th of January.
I have been aware of this issue on some Tundra's but it's a solid truck regardless imo.

    Will keep y'all posted.

I just got done doing an oil change and noticed a similar find on my 14' with 126k. I'm going to keep an eye on it, but am pretty certain a dealership would just laugh me out the door if I attempted to get them to fix it.

Dealership called me back within an hour of taking the truck in for the diagnostic. My god am I thankfully for the extended warranty.. I'd be broke and furious.
See the attached image of forecasted work to remedy my.. leak. Dealership stated they have already ordered parts and all work is FULLY covered.. whew.

Could be worse. I thought I read on here that some folks had to have the cab off or the engine out to repair their cam towers.

You sound like you have a full blown leak. I've never smelt burning oil or noticed any saturation around that area, just some discoloration obviously caused by oil. According to Toyotas extended warranty, I would still be out of spec. I'm glad you are getting yours covered!

The dealership alerted me to the leak during my 75k service. Quoted $4250 for the repair when I told them I couldn’t afford that they told me how dangerous the condition was and immediately dropped the quote to $3800(seemed suspect). After talking to them a bit they suggested calling Toyota Corporate who apologized for the experience I was having but said the vehicle was out of warranty and they had nothing to offer, which I understand.

After a few months now I have finally located the damp area but I still can’t afford the fix. So fingers crossed it doesn’t become a bigger issue. If it does then oh well.

Unless it's leaking on the exhaust heat shield and you can smell it burning off or you have to add oil between changes, just drive it.

I had a '78 Chevy Bonanza that leaked and spit oil out of the tail pipe all the time. I had to add a quart every other fillup. Keep the oil level ok and everyone will be ok.

looks like we are starting to see more and more gen 3s with the issue now that they have more miles.
I don't think Toyota ever fixed the issue.

So, I have a 2008 with 180K and this is a pic of my passenger side. Looks like it could just be a valve cover leaking (WISHFUL THINKING, I KNOW). I do not have to add oil between changes. My question is, what if any performance symptoms will the cam tower leak produce that a valve cover leak will not??

I have a very minor seepage on my passenger back corner... very very minor and it’s been that way for at least a year maybe more. It barely leaves a residue on my finger when I touch it. I’m only at 37k miles but 4 years and 10 months... can I have Toyota document this for the future if necessary to be covered? I don’t want it serviced now since to me it’s so minor I think they would most likely screw something else up in the process. To me it’s not even an issue as of now.

Since you're almost out of warranty, I would definitely have it documented, or have it done now. Even for an experienced Tech, its like an 8 hour job. Multiply that by the ridiculous prices dealerships charge, and you could be paying some serious out of pocket cash.

My thing is if it never gets worse I’ll be fine, or if they repair it who’s to say it doesn’t leak again? But if it’s documented and say next year it gets severe would they cover it since I had it documented under warranty.

Dealerships in general will gleefully want to repair your cam tower leak under warranty because they get paid, and that's all that matters to them. They still have to get approval from Toyota for the claim, not sure of the approval rates, but when I was with Mazda I don't remember many obvious problems being declined. I can't tell you for sure that documenting it now will cover you, but it would certainly be better than doing nothing. Just my 2cents of course.

I thought they didn't like doing it because they only get paid for 8 hours and it's more like 15 to do it properly.

That being said, not aware of anyone have a leak reoccur after getting the repair, @Walleye1875 .

What the dealership is reimbursed for V/S what the Tech is paid are why Techs usually always get screwed. Don't forget flat rate only applies to the guy actually doing the job.

Finaly had mine repaired at 193,148 miles. It was 3 month fight with warranty company (I did purchased addl warranty that was intill 193,400 ;-) ) At the same time, they had replaced timing chain with all of tensioners.

LOL...that's awesome. I'm sure it was a fight, but to think a company offers an extended warranty for that many miles makes me laugh. Hopefully you at least broke even on that warranty!

    Way more than that:
    1. Water pump and belts
    2. Front calipers
    3. Last visit with Cam tower and timing chain repair

I've purchased warranty at 133,148 and it was for 60K or 7 years. Well, 2 years later.......... well it was well worth it

This should be covered under the 60 months/60,000 miles powertrain warranty, right? I don't have it at the moment with 38,000 miles on the clock, but I am watching it.

Dude, that is awesome. The company is obviously making money but what a risky business model.
