A little of this and a little of that.
I'm in the same boat and I'm getting it fixed sooner rather than later.

Some may remember I was told by my local dealer that I had a seep, not a leak and they would not be replacing. It was recommended i take it to the dealer i purchased it from to get a second opinion. I did so and was told the following:

"Sorry for the delay. The ruling is that a seep Is not considered a failure. There has to be a visible leak to qualify for warranty replacement. The dealer in your area is correct."

    Just an update.

A little of this and a little of that.

If oil is getting to the outside of the engine them it's leaking somewhere. Wow. Did you sign up with the law firm staying the class action suit?

No I haven't yet. I don't have any legal experience with lawsuits and such and really don't know how. But, I'm with you and have been up and down the river on that; a seep IS a leak. If water is seeping in through the hull of a boat, then it's leaking and it likely gets worse. Same thing. So by the time my warranty goes to expire, I can guarantee there will be visible oil dripping down on the heatshield ;)

A little of this and a little of that.

All you have to do is go to http://www.classlawdc.com/2018/07/18/toyota-camshaft-tower-seal-leaking-class-action-investigation/ and fill out the little questionnaire and they’ll call you for more information. Takes about 5 minutes. After that it’s just that you’ll be compensated for the fix should the lawsuit go through. SO what do you have to lose? About 5 minutes, that’s all....

I just picked up a 2019 last weekend. I did smell a light burning smell today after I pulled in the garage.
I stuck my head under the driver side fender and I could smell the burning smell.
Just came across this thread and went out with a flashlight to check. It doesn’t look like anything is leaking. Everything looks dry.
I hope it’s just the new burning off. 500 mi on the clock.

The tech that did mine says he gets 1-2 per month, and he just works the afternoon shift.

Just do a quick search on cam tower leaking and there are members with pics after dealer fixed. After the fix it’s black sealant. Factory sealant is gray.

Just got mine back from getting fixed. This is what they said on the ticket. Customer states there is an oil leak at the back of the motor on passenger side. SOP Parts. Checked and verified oil leak from the piss side cam cradle. Also noted an oil leak at the timing cover. Poor adhesion from the sealer used from factory is the cause. Disassembled and resealed pass cam cradle and timing cover. reassembled the engine(eep!) cleaned oil and residue from the compartment, test drove and no leaks or codes found.

Not usually. I think early on when this issue first started appearing they took off the timing cover, but I think as techs got better at the repair they could do it without removing the timing cover. Mine was not removed. However, it's good they took care of yours since they found it leaking.

It looks like the timing cover needs to come off to get to the cam chains.

They have enough room to pull the chains forward, mine was done w/o removing the timing cover as well.

My ‘19 also had the same smell in the first 1K miles. At 1600 now and the smell is gone. With all new trucks, I always do the first oil change at 2K miles. Will go to factory recommendation afterwards. Long and short, the smell is normal when new.

Update everyone just got mine back tonight took them 8 days. Was at the Toyota dealership for 8 days to fix the dam cam tower leak they did both sides and had to pay them $2200.00 going to fax all the paperwork over to the attorneys on Monday so hopefully sooner than later I’ll get this lawsuit going and maybe I’ll recover some of this money I posted some pictures a while back and you can see where they had my whole engine tore apart I stopped in there this past Wednesday to check on it and they were having trouble getting the timing set back right. But it seems to be running good tonight.

The service department billed nine hours to do mine (3 days). Looking at my invoice, they removed the time chain since I see the timing chain gasket listed.

This may be a dumb question, but are FFV and non FFV engines made on the same assembly line? Is there any correlation between FFV and or non FFV with the leaking cam shaft tower issue?

Do they even offer non-FFV engines anymore? I didn't have an option when I bought mine, FFV engine and has never seen E85, and never will.

Yep. I don't think I've ever seen a FFV for sale here in Oregon.

Mine is a ‘16 CA non-FFV, and it has the cam tower leak. Someone mentioned a timing problem after the cam tower repair, and that’s a risk when doing this job because the timing chain is removed from the cams. If the tech doesn’t clearly mark the chain with the sprockets, and doesn’t hold tension on the chain, one tooth off is going to cause performance issues. Really sucks that new trucks have to get a tear down like this. The tech at my dealership said, “don’t go there.”
