Looks good, hopefully no issues going forward.

I would submit copies of your receipt and any info you have on this matter and write a letter and mail it to corporate Toyota, you shouldn't have to pay for something they have dropped the ball on.

I agree totally, I just may do that. The service manager did give me a free oil change next time. Lol. You know the funny thing that bothers me is that my dealership acted when I told them it was leaking and they acted like they never heard of the tundra cam tower issue before. But when they found out that Toyota corporate wasn’t going to do anything about the leak and that I was paying for it they said oh we’ve done plenty of those, your truck is in good hands. Just hate the playing of games, shoot straight I can take it.

Just picked mine up from the dealer. Tech pulled out a ton of papers he printed off showing him how to do this repair. That didnt exactly give me a warm fuzy feeling. At the end of our conversation I felt confident in him though. Dealer had it for about 6 days. 10 miles later and SO FAR everything is performing perfectly just like before. Glad i got it done.

Actually, that is a very good thing. Studying established procedures and following them is a heck of a lot better than "winging it".

Before I purchased my ‘19 the dealer said they haven’t seen the issue in ‘18 or ‘19 model years. After reading this thread that doesn’t appear to be the case. In their defense they are not among the busiest dealers in the country. I knew about the issue before making the purchase so it isn’t a huge concern. I was just happy that they have mechanics with experience performing this repair.

I pick out my doctor and surgeon if needed LOL. I pull my own wrenches... Oil change, trans fluid change, brakes, diffs etc. No one cares more about your $45k truck than you. 80% of the people that work at a dealership don't make enough to afford the product they sell or fix. Not being a dick, just stating the facts. $15/hr does not equal $45k crew max tundra. What scares me is turn over rate of employees in the dealerships. My closest Toyota dealer (which I don't use) gets a new service manager, general manager, and sales manager every few months. The wild part is if you are in the computer they are dumb enough to email and call you to announce the new guy and see if you want to buy a new one or stop by and say hi. LOL!!! I would love to mount a hidden camera on tundras and see if they really drop the skid plate and change the filter. When they perform the $300 transmission service do they drop the pan on the trans? What is the mystery oil in the drum? These places are all about profits. How do they make their money? Low wages, and salesman slime with false promises. Thats how!

Exactly! My friend works at our local Toyota dealership . And every time I’m there they beg for a good review. He told me if they get one bad review the get fired. That’s why there’s always new faces every time I go there.

Thank you for the class action link, I sent my details just to get more attention on my truck. We’ll see what the dealer says when I take it back.

    http://www.classlawdc.com/2018/07/18/toyota-camshaft-tower-seal-leaking-class-action-investigation/

Sent them a message on Friday afternoon and they have already emailed me and called me on the phone this morning. Gave them more details about my truck and the leak w/ pics.

They are def interested in more of us contacting them about this issue. We all need to contact this firm about this issue. That’s the only way Toyota Corp will step up and fix these “out of warranty” guys and gals trucks. Let’s help the guys out of warranty, brothas and sistas. If you have this issue w/ a leak/seep/drip/weep whatever you want to call it then click on the link and either fill out the contact me form or call them. :help::help::help::help:

My 2018 looks the same and is weeping slightly still. From my old experience as a mechanic I would say this is RTV failure from either heat or poor oil resistance properties. The emission components on top of the manifolds come fairly close to the cam tower joint that is leaking and I’d imagine it gets pretty hot. The oil is weeping through the rtv.
Thus the fix being a new type of RTV from the dealer.

If I did it myself I’d use Permatex Ultra Copper and never worry again.

    Definition of seep:

    seep
to leak, drip, or flow out slowly through small openings or pores; ooze.

Show this to service advisor when you’re denied a cam tower leak repair for a “seep.”

Maybe I just can't tell from the picture, but it looks like you applied that Permatex stuff to the valve cover and not the cam tower seal?

Haven’t touched it. Truck has 7,200 miles on it. Grey RTV is the factory fipg on the cam tower. Valve cover appears to be a black rubber gasket.

My Toyota case worker called today.
She said there are levels of leaks that determine if they will handle the repair.
    Leak 1, Leak 2, Leak 3, Leak 4
    Seep 1, Seep 2, Seep 3, Seep 4
She’s checking to see what mine came back as, and how to proceed.

They must be watching this thread, because everyone I’ve spoke to asks “how exactly did I hear about or find this leak”

That's exactly what the service director asked me after my whole situation was resolved! It's like they know about it, but don't expect people to look for it or ever find it. Hopefully they at least get yours all documented and then take care of you after your warranty period if it develops into what they consider a "leak".

That’s what I told the lady. I said look - I’ve put hundreds of thousands of miles on Toyota’s for 20 years - and never had 1 leak oil at 60K miles. I said if you refuse to fix this right now, I need a gaurantee you’re extending this under warranty for many years to come and fixing for free when the drip hits my exhaust shield.
    We’ll see!
    I was nice about it.

What exactly is a cam tower. I noticed some oil leaking above the oil filter the other day when I changed it. Is that the issue you guys are talking about?

Possibly. Look (you’ll need a flashlight) above the tire in the wheel well to the rear of the engine. If you see “wet” stuff you sir have joined this elite club!

After you find out if you have joined the club contact the law firm linked a few posts above. Take it to your “trusted” dealer to see if they’ll fix it or not...

Just looked. I think I'm good, I don't see anything. Looks like I spilled a little oil filling it up last time. Thanks man
