Yep, doesn’t stop me from buying them. It’s his loss, plenty to gain from here, but with that attitude I’m glad he is gone. It’s one thread about a very real issue...

I don't think this here is ad nauseam. I think you described it better as "Stating a problem and working together...". Without coming here and 'working together' by describing how you went about trying to get a service done, I don't know how anyone here would even know the scope of the issue. Toyota isn't going to show up here and say 'Hey fellas, guess what we see happening with the cam shaft towers...'. I too just spent 50k on a new truck. It will probably be fine but there are no guarantees, only warranties. So now I know to check it regularly, and isn't that part of the point of this thread?

People are just reporting the problem ... I don't see it as whining and like the posts and the info.
Even if I had the seep, I would still buy the Tundra but it's good to know what's going on.

I have my appointment tomorrow. But how does Toyota determine whether they're going to fix it; if they can visibly see oil around the gasket seal?

Suggest giving the forum a shot. I've been on here for several months and this is the only thread that has a negative theme. The rest are quite good, but had they been like this one, I too would have departed.

Man what a bummer your other side is leaking now. This is what I was worried with for mine as well and I couldn't get an extended warranty out of them. So I might go the same route as you and move onto something else, haven't fully made up my mind. Been looking at 2500hd's with the 6.0 and the titan XD.

I wonder if Toyota will ever issue a formal extended warranty for this issue like they have done for the AIP systems.

I don't know. We are really effing close to paying off our mortgage. Hoping to have it wrapped up this year. I don't really want to direct cash toward another truck right now. But, if I am going to have pesky problems like this - I might as well just get a heavy duty from one of the big 3. Sure, it will probably have issues, but at least I'll have some real payload to work with.

    Freakin' blows. :frusty:

Ha I was going to throw that out there, he has to know. You would think they would review warranty work that's happening on there products so they can look ahead and know where to make changes to solve it. I really think this is an inherent design flaw that can only be cured by redesigning the motor which I don't see them doing until the next gen. If they carry over the motor with upgrades then maybe they might have a fix for it.

Toyota needs to completely redesign the cylinder head and eliminate the intermediate cam tower, and integrate the cam cradles into the head. Look at the Ford coyote 5.0, no separate “cam tower.” Four cammers have come a long way since Toyota introduced this 5.7 in 2007.

Just checked my 2017 with 12k on it. Passenger side looked fine. Driver side is leaking Looked at my buddies 2010 with 80k. His driver side was BAD. Picture is my truck. Gonna call Toyota. Really dont want my new truck getting ripped apart.

Yeah that would be a much better design and something the could integrate onto the current block I would think. But this would require and investment in tooling at the factory level which is a cost Toyota probably wont incur this late in the trucks platform cycle. Maybe gen 4 will have an updated 5.7...we can hope.

I wanted to be like others and say it was no big deal and it was small thing. Because of this thread I went out and looked at my 2018 with 6000 miles on it... Guess who has two thumbs and both seals leaking? THIS GUY! Before that guy leaves this forum he needs to open a google search and start typing "tundra cam" the rest will auto-fill with our pesky little topic in this thread. When I called the dealer today the service manager was dumbfounded and "has never heard of this!" I told him to type that into google and see what happened... His tone and level of help changed quickly. This ain't a secret anymore.

Sorry to hear yours are leaking, seems like a lot of members on here with very low mileage 2018's with the cam tower issue. I hope 2019's are not going to follow suit.

If it can be fixed by a mechanic in a shop then i dont think its a design flaw..a mfg. defect.

I see your point, its just hard to understand why a manufacturer would let a "defect" persist for so long without a resolution at the production level. The repair calls for a different type of sealant other then the factory applied and some have had repaired motors leak again which to me points to a design flaw. I think with this 2 piece design there is movement there that causes the seal to fail, if it was a once piece assembly like mentioned a few post back it would eliminate the issue.

Semantics. How about this: It is a poor design that is sensitive to operator installation errors as well as material variations.

Add me to the list. '16 SR5 with 50k on it.

My truck was at the dealer today and I asked them to go ahead and check them out since I was nearing the 60k power train warranty. They did and advised my Driver's side was leaking. They are replacing both under warranty and giving me a loaner.

Thankfully I asked them to check it out. I almost didn't!

I had both sides done. Dropped it off yesterday, they called this morning said it was ready. Very quick turn around. Now just have to burn off the oil smell from them doing the work.

2018 CM Sport V8 4x4 purchased in June of 2018. I decided to finally check mine today with 5100miles on the clock. Passenger side dry, driver's side leaking pretty good. You can see the oil has dripped onto the heat shield quite a bit. Hmmmmmm…..

    Driver's side
