I went straight to the dealer on a Saturday morning just to have them verify I had the cam tower leak. They called around lunch and confirmed it and said timing chain cover was leaking too. They were waiting on confirmation from toyota to cover the tc cover work, and already knew the cam tower leak was covered. Said they had done a "few" whatever that means. Asked to keep it till Monday to hear back from toyota and offered a loaner car. I declined as I have three other vehicles. Called Monday, said it was all covered under the powertrain warranty and had it ready Tuesday after lunch. They assured me it was repaired properly and backed that up with a 12 mo/12k warranty.

I'm satisfied, but will call toyota hq to push for an extended powertrain warranty.

The master tech at the dealer will tackle the repair, it's a pretty big job. when you get the truck back make sure to check your oil level and run it about 200 miles and change the oil. If you look back a page or two I had a good bit of gasket debris in my filter at the 200 interval change after this repair.

Hope you have better luck getting an extended warranty, all they would offer me was $350 towards parts or accessories.

Just got call from dealer and person from Toyota warranty approved to do both sides. They said parts are already ordered and team of head mechanics will work on my tundra unless he lied to me.

Wondering how long would take to get those parts and he said they won't open engine until they get all necessary parts at service. He don't have competition date yet, originally I was told by end of the week.

Also what he mentioned that most likely they will pull engine out or enough to work on it. Is this true that they need to pull out engine. Also after he stated that they may come up with different solution, don't know what he means by saying that. Also he said definitely they will not remove cab in order to perform this repair, I didn't even ask him about this.

    Your thoughts?

Dealer had to order that for mine as well, arrived within 2 days. They at first told me my engine was going to be pulled as well but in the end just ended up doing it in the truck and without pulling the timing cover. Mine only had one side leaking and that's all they would approve for repair. Hope all goes well with your truck, its a pretty big repair and doesn't sit well with anyone to have there engine removed and cracked open so don't feel like your alone being worried about it. Those in this thread have been there also.

Where'd you end up taking it? I'm in the western suburbs and I'm interested to see how there work turns out.

Toyota only pays for those hours. They might have worked on it longer. Do you have black sealant now. Post pics. :)

A lot of the pictures on here and Google images of cam tower leaks looks like there is a LOT of the FIPG sealant, as in it looks like it's "oozing" out after they closed everything up after application. Is that just a symptom of time, or is it because too much FIPG was applied during manufacturing? My cam towers look like there's a lot less FIPG; it looks more like little beads rather than a ton of sealant being squished out.

I'm going to tell myself that having small beads of FIPG is better and is indicative that it will never leak, so nobody tell me anything different.

when they repaired it, it has even more FIPG...like all over the place.

Don't they use different FIPG, though, or is it just a different color?

I don't see any difference in starting engine and driving. Only 200 miles?
Are you guys typically changing oil that soon after this repair or?

Yes. When they did mine, my dealer even changed the sticker on my windshield, to change oil in 500km (310miles). After that they told me next oil change would be at 4000km (2500miles) after that it was normal oil changes.

Interesting, they did not told me anything about that. Also my sticker is still there, old one for 30,000 oil change and currently my truck is 28,690 miles

Mine had smaller bead from the factory and it leaked, I don't think there is any rhyme or reason to this and you will drive yourself crazy trying to make sense of it.

Change the oil, my dealer said nothing about it either. I took the advice of @the beast And changed after 200 miles. Debris in my filter, so it's good piece of mind. I will change again at 5k And then back to 10k after that. 20180311_214956.jpg 20180311_215033.jpg

Lol, my advice is stop viewing this thread. It will drive you crazy, shoot I read about the issue before purchasing my truck and thought " hell its 2017 Toyota has to have this handled by now" wrong! Typical Toyota fashion let a big issue plague a vehicle for many years, this is partly because they keep a platform for so long. That's good in some aspects but bad in others...look how long frame rust has plagued Tacoma's and they keep adding years. I like my Toyotas but I hate to see stuff like this.
