Is anyone aware of a cold air intake option for the 2020 Tundra that is California legal, other than a TRD intake? I have looked at K&N, S&B, AFE, Stillen etc, but none of them appear to be smog legal in Cali. Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Yeah stock would be the only option unless you want to swap it out when you have to test.

I bought my Tundra with a Bully Dog intake and the guy passed me but said I’d need a sticker saying it’s legal but it doesn’t get one so I need to go to stock before Sept smog.

Not to start a rant...but is there any specific emissions that are tied to the intake? Or does CA just have a very broad "nobody touch anything" law? Just curious

Sometimes if you call the company before ordering the intake, let them know you are from CA. Sometimes they will provide you with a CARB sticker, after all, they want to make a sell. I had trouble finding one for my Nissan Z which wasn't entirely legal, but the company I wanted to buy it from mailed me a CARB sticker to pass smog. I just keep it in the center console. Didn't want a sticker messing up the look of my "spiffed up" engine bay. Worth a try.

I’m actually not sure. California has all kinds of laws that don’t necessarily make any sense. o_O

CARB requires most aftermarket 'Performance" parts to be approved by them. Essentially, CARB will require a manufactur to demonstrate that their products will not alter or increase vehicle emissions. This testing process is time consuming and can be expensive, in which some manufacturers will not entertain. Even if certain criteria is met by a manufacturer, it can take months/years for a CARB Executive Order (EO#) sticker to be approved/issued. This is why you will see several companies state in their fine print "Not for sale or legal for use in California" or something similar, or CARB EO# pending. Companies can be heavily fined for selling/shipping to a California resident.

I think it's rediculous, but that's the way it is.

Since you have a 2020, and depending on your county, you have at least 5 years (or more) before you would need a smog, assuming you don't sell your truck. For instance, my truck is registered in a smog exempt county.

Just find someone in Arizona and ask them if you can pay their water or electric bill for a few months and register your vehicle there. Save a lot of cash on the registration and get tags from another state that isn't "batshit crazy" about stupid stuff.

a little more than 2 years left till I retire and I am out. I am thinking about sending the wife ahead (to lock down any deals on property) before I retire. We have been looking in Arizona, New Mexico (she is from there), and Nevada. At least there I can mod the truck without consequences. In 1979 I bought a new FJ40 Landcruiser. No smog tests in the county I lived in then. Brought it overseas and modded the hell out of it. When I returned to California a few years later, I couldn't register it because I couldn't pass smog. I had to sell it. I should have paid attention back then.

It is long past time to get the hell out of the state. That was the first of now a second thing I have procured in this state that is now illegal to own in this state.

88% of the hoops we jump through are completely useless. But, there is surfing 40 minutes one direction and desert 40 minutes the other direction.

Intakes are expensive. I need that money for registration fees.

Before I got my Tundra, I had a GMC Sierra with a K&N intake on it and it was carb compliant for California and came with a sticker as well. The instructions said you didn’t have to attach it unless you live in California. Maybe the K&N doesn’t work the same way on the Tundras.

No K&N paid money and jumped through the stupid hoops to get that "compliance". Lots of sales in the Republic of Kalifornia

My wife’s a teacher of 19 years. She’s got 10 more years before 100% pension kicks in. I am stuck here for awhile. My interests are automobile, shotgun and water sports related. I have a huge target on my back here. We are for sure out when retirement comes. Utah and Arizona are on the radar.

Back in 1979 I bought a brand new Toyota Landcruiser FJ 40. I lived in Kings County, California when I bought it from Toyota of Visalia. No smog check requirement when I got it new. Kings County wasn't part of the scheeme. I brought the TLC over to the Philippines with me. Just before I left, I got the header kit from ManaFree and installed it. When I came back to the Republic of California in 1986, I couldn't get any smog station to check it because all of the smog stuff was removed. By then, I had the Holley 350 carb on it and it burned so clean, when my bud in Ventura put the probe in the exhaust, it passed. But, because the junk was missing from it and all the stickers and stuff was missing; no registration. It's all a friggin ruse. Should have left then.... Well, the house here just got sold. Moving company gets a call tomorrow, and I am leaving the state for good (driving my Tundra TRD Sport, with the wife driving her 2019 4Runner Limited behind me).

New Mexico, an open carry state. Not much of a move and not Arizona or somewhere like that, but out of California. New house being built, no HOA and a 3 car garage with a pit in bay 1. No more jackstands to change oil or get to the underbelly of the Tundra and the wife's 4Runner.
