$599 and hopefully the last year I will have to renew in this god-for-saken state. When I moved here in 2013 the state charged me over $1500 to register my old F250 because I purchased it less than a year in South Carolina before moving to California. They decided it was a great idea to just take their own cut of a sales tax difference between California and South Carolina. I could not believe it.

Even some of Moonbeam's followers are pissed. Here's hoping we can repeal this mistake in November.

Does registration fees go down as the truck gets older? How do they base it?

I think it’s based on the value of your vehicle. I could be wrong though. I hope it goes down eventually.

Just paid $555 for 2015 with custom plate in CA. You can still buy property in Bay Area if you manage your money properly. I’m a blue collar worker in the electricians union doing commercial audio video installs and my wife is a preschool teacher and we bought a house a mile from the beach in Pacifica which is 10-15 minutes from SF 3 years ago. Sure it’s pricey, but to me it worth it. We have everything in Cali. People look down on construction workers, but in the Bay Area that’s where the money is at without the stress of being stuck behind a computer in a cubicle all day. If you’re good with your hands and know a trade you should be ok. Plenty of work with great pay. Join a union though. Otherwise you’re getting played. As for politics. They suck everywhere. No exceptions, someone will always have something to complain about on any side. Nothing or no one is perfect.

Great. Should have bought a Ford then? Doesn’t their value drop in half after a year of ownership?

Mine's (mines?) an older rig ~ 2005. Newer vehicles get hit lots harder ~ older rigs like mine, not so much.

Over two years my registration has only increased $8.00 ~ I'll take that okay. On a newer vehicle just bend over . . .

$140 to register my Tacoma in Pennsylvania for two years, and registration isn’t tied to passing smog (here it’s just called emissions testing, and police haven’t been enforcing it due to COVID)! I paid $47.50 to for my truck’s emissions test safety inspection last August and it’s good for a year!

California is the most car enthusiast unfriendly state in the country!

Another thing that really sucks about California with regards to vehicles is smog testing. In pretty much all other states, you can put antique tags on any vehicle that is 25 years old or older, and in states with emissions testing (Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut, etc) your vehicle is exempted as long you only drive it a certain amount of miles; Not in California...

All vehicles 1976 and newer must past smog every two years, and there is NO antique vehicle loophole.

Nevada supposedly requires smog testing for all vehicles 1968 and newer ONLY in high population areas like Vegas and Reno, but I find it hard to believe owners of muscle cars in those areas would actually have to get them smogged...

Would a ‘69 Road Runner or ‘70 Chevelle SS, or any full-size America truck made prior to about 1978 even have emissions control stuff on them?!?!

Well I left California too, I did not understand why 1/2 of the gas tax and vehicle license fees went into the general fund for welfare programs and not for roads. Also 10% of the car on the road in California are electric and they use the roads but don't pay gas tax for roads.
