Ignoring supply/demand, Covid-19, local market conditions, etc, does anyone know what is the approximate max discount a dealer can give on a new Tundra before any factory rebates? It would be approximate, of course, based on the price of the truck.

I'm wondering what the mathematical 'limit' is, not the "you get what you can negotiate" number.

I'm negotiating a deal on one now, but I'm not knowledgeable on Tundras (Lifelong Silverado convert) so I am at risk of leaving money on the table..or the opposite, and letting a good deal pass me up.

Example: if a dealer is giving me $2,500 discount on top of all rebates. Although that might be good under these conditions, how much more room do they have mathematically before I start being ridiculous with my counter-offers?

    Knowledge is power!

Most dealers are not budging and dealers here will not sell less than MSRP. My dealer has has the same truck for over a month.

At least 10% off MSRP, some are able to get down lower without too much trouble before rebates.

Just before the covid junk, I had a deal ready to go after rebate for 10k off MSRP on a 2020 Limited Crewmax. It was right at 19% off MSRP with rebates.

Best bet is to comb the threads for prices paid and determine price paid before ttl for apples to apples. Current conditions are tricky too. In 2018 i paid 41.5k + ttl for 4x4 crewmax limited (no extra bells and whistles). msrp was 46ish i think.

People should check out costco's auto program before they even start to talk to someone at the dealership they are looking at (probably not the same one that costco will use, i had to drive an hour to get to the costco dealership).

Go through the steps, sales will contact you (i did it via email), tell them what you want and they will give you the pre-negotiated costco price. This gives you your ceiling price, dont go a penny above it, because you can just go to the dealership that costco uses and buy it for that.

This is all assuming you are going with a new truck

For someone that just bought a truck 2 weeks ago it all depends on the market in your area. I'm in NorCal and dealership had been empty for awhile. Only discount I got was the rebate, this is the same dealer that's marking up all their trucks $5000 which is common around here. I bought it because I needed a vehicle and I couldn't wait any longer. I was set that only thing I want was TRD sport due to not having to deal with the chrome bumpers. I had a dealer that was ready to deal at $4000 below MSRP but I didn't pull the trigger and told them I'll think about it. Called them 2 days later and that deal was longer available, they would rather have that 1 Tundra they have sit in the lot because if I don't buy for what they want the next guy will. It's stressful to buy a car right now let alone a truck due to inventory. One advice I can give you is what others have given me here while I was shopping is that it doesn't matter if you pay $1-$1000 more than the other guy, what matters is that you can afford it and that you'll love the truck. I don't regret what I paid one bit. Good luck.

Well, the good news is that the deals are still out there if you are willing to look, then maybe drive! Toyota.com does not make it easy to find the vehicle you are looking for....not like GM or Ford.

Here WAS my deal (notice "Was"):

SR5..Calvary, cloth with TRD SPort & TRD Convenience + some "Distributor Installed" stuff

    $49,066 Sticker (no dealer adds)
    -3,000 Rebate
    -4,566 Discount
    $41,500 Sales Price
    -31,000 Trade
    ????? Other stuff
$10,500 Out the Door **Before tax & registration. It's out-of-state**

I also got an equivalent offer on a Limited from another out-of-market dealer, I think it was $13,500 net out-the-door.

Both of these were out of market (DFW), I was driving 3-4 hours to get these.

While I was deciding between a loaded SR5 and a Limited, another deal kinda fell in my lap:

4Runner OR Premium w Sunroof. Very rare in DFW right now.

    Rebate: $1,000
    Discount $3,042

I think there was another $1,000 - $1,500 in there, but i was happy and ready to be done with it - At some point, you just get tired-head and are ready to be done. PLUS, they made it super-easy. I will gladly pay a little bit of a PREMIUM to NOT go into a Toyota dealership in DFW! Also, it's 104 degress here, and I'm sitting in my living room waiting for it to be delivered.

So, I guess now I need go join the 4Runner forum!

Look at Edmunds for an idea of list vs what people usually pay vs dealer cost.

I am a little embarrassed to say, I couldn't decide on a color.. I have the Blazing blue in a 2018, and really like it. I had a thread going here with my debate. Decided to just keep it.

Oh, I received a call back this week offering me $3k more in trade in value than they did back in the beginning of the covid time too. It seems that the values of used Tundras is going up a bit. They only have one on their lot and I would have to wait a month or so to get a new one.

I thanked them, and will still retain mine.

Pre Covid, I negotiated ~$5600 off MSRP on my 1794 - not including the rebate, so that 10% figure sounds about right as a baseline.

With limited supply of trucks, I'm not sure that is still realistic, but it does give you some indication of where the dealer cost actually is. I'm actually surprised that Toyota is still offering rebates and special finance deals when dealer lots are pretty empty.
