Buying a new truck. Talk me out of buying a F150

Thanks. last F150 I’ll buy and it will most likely get passed down to someone in the family when I die and if they ever sell it I’ll haunt them

My next question was do you want to sell once the new Tundra comes out. :) That thing looks CLEAN and I don't blame you for wanting to hang on to it.

I mean stranger things have happened but I have a good amount of money into so the offer would have to be pretty damn good

I guess you don't have much experience with Ford door panels. I had to tell people not to rest their butt on mine

I changed my own spark plugs at 10 years on my 99 F150 as I did not trust a shop changing them,. There are entire threads on Ford spark plugs being blown out. I was lucky as mine never did. It was a process of heating up the engine for 5 minutes to give some thermal relief when removing the plugs. It took me 2 hours to do 4 plugs so I restarted the engine for another 5 minutes. I had no helper so it was a lot of trial and error in getting the right extensions for the plug removal. It also involved removing the COP for each one. I'll take a oil leak vs blown plug any day imo.

Any truck from that era is better than most trucks today. On the other hand, I looked forever it seemed for a used Tundra. Kept missing them because resale is crazy on them and if you’re not standing there when it’s listed it will be gone before you make the trip. When I did get mine the salesman was all whatever didn’t say anything unless I asked didn’t bash any other brands didn’t push me on a new truck instead of the used one. They sale themselves and he was just the guy to go along for the ride and answer any questions I had. Love my Tundra!

Yes, I liked the style of the old 99 F150. But I ( and wife) like limited Tundra CM way more than the old bench seat Ford XLT xrta cab. With all the texting drivers out there I hope to never use the airbags, but the newer Tundra should be safer. The 5.7 liter is a step up from the 5.4 liter, more up and higher redline.

This thread is getting tired, but I will relay my experience. Bought an 07 SR5 in August 2007. Surprisingly within the first 4 months had to take it in for a failed battery and new belts (found cracks upon close inspection). Aside from that, no other issues in 10 years of ownership. I was meticulous in my care and service on that vehicle. Sold it 10 years to the day to purchase my 2017 Pro. Within 1st month of ownership of the Pro my head unit craps out. Fixed under warranty, no big deal. 3 months later, guy who bought my 07 calls me and says the engine seized up! Toyota corporate steps up and helps the guy with the replacement engine since they deem it a complete fluke based on the service history (ALWAYS serviced at Toyota dealership). Generally Toyota vehicles are reliable, but a blanket statement saying they are unquestionably the best is bold. My FIL (now mine) 2013 F150 with the 5.0L has never been in the shop aside from service visits. Every manufacturer is going to have lemons. Yes, Toyotas have less lemons, but I've owned two.

I love my 15 SR5 TRD. I rented a brand new F-150 Platinum with the 3.5l Ecoboost last week in Jackson Hole. I have to say that I loved that motor, but only as a renter. I have (founded) concerns about the motor long term. I have (founded) zero concerns about my rig long term!

Ford also has a better suite of technology and built-in features than the Tundra but my #1 value in my vehicle is that it'll start up and run true when I absolutely need it whether that's getting to work on time or out of the mountains when I'm solo.

If I had to commute long distances I'd be ok with the smaller Ecoboost but it's not ideal. Otherwise I'd stay away from them...plastic oil pans, long term reliability issues, too much technology imo. I want a truck...I don't need heated tailgates, backup assist, etc. My Tundra will be worth more than a Ford of the same year when I go to sell it.

My parents tend to buy F150s and keep them for quite a while. The last two have been pretty bad. Their current one has left my dad stranded at least a couple of times. That said, it is getting old, I think a 2008. Only has 60k miles on it though.

My brother just bought a new one though and it had some mechanical problems almost right away. If I remember right, something about a vacuum switch causing the transfer case to grind at highway speeds when the temps got cold.

Doesn't matter how much trouble they cause, or how many needless trips back to the dealer it takes. I have friends who'll buy Ford after Ford and will happily stay blissfully ignorant, of any other brand but the blue oval.

I only know one guy who has an f150 platinum. He has had it in the dealer maybe 10 times for stupid issues.

The f150 is like dating the super hot chick with daddy issues. The features are great but not a long term idea

I had a 5.0 F150 the year before the aluminum bodys came out. It would get 17 MPG even though Ford said combined was 19 MPG. I get slightly better MPG with the Tundra. Ford fluffs their numbers on MPG and towing, where as Tundra is more conservatively rated. No real issues with the Ford. I give an edge to the Tundra as far as fit and finish is concerned. One thing that really bugged me about the Ford was when you closed the door, the door panel would flex/vibrate like it was thin as a sheet of paper. The Tundra doesn't do that. The Tundra gives you more for the money too. You have to step up to a well equipped XLT or Lariat in the Ford to get a touch screen and factory bedliner. My SR5 came stock with those options. Plus, having a rear window that lets down is a neat feature that I like. If I was going to get a Ford, I would only consider the 5.0. Even Ford mechanics will tell you not to get a turbo charged engine. However, Ford and Chevy both have had issues with the new 10 speed transmissions... Lots of threads online about all the issues shifting, studder, downshifting, searching for gear, etc. The Tundra is sort of the Glock of trucks. It's stupid simple and just works.

Toyota has lemons, but I think your story helps illustrate another huge difference with Toyota ownership: customer care/service.

Toyota stands behind their products. Corporate, and the dealerships, will generally be very accommodating if something serious goes wrong, sometimes even out of warranty. The same can't be said for the other OEM's.

That said, even with those noted lemons, I feel much more comfortable owning a Toyota outside of warranty than I do owning a Ford or GM or FCA product. Toyota's are engineered to last longer....plain and simple.

I can't imagine 10 speed transmissions, when I still read about how our 6 speeds, "shift too much" or "gear-hunt", when the solution is Tundra's Sequential Shifter+ a tiny bit of effort on our part. Yes, I'm a "Relic" from the past, who started driving 50 years ago, with a standard transmission:eek2:. The solution to the proper gear for speed, load and road conditions, hasn't really changed though, it's still at our right hand; just like it always was:thumbsup:

F150’s are updated substantially every couple years— look at the resale value on a 2017... it’s crazy how fast they kill you. I know a vehicle is a terrible investment, but it helps when you trade in for another model.

For instance— just got a 19 limited out the door for 45k. Cargurus says I could sell it in my area for 47.... that’s wild.

In 3 years if I want to get the 2023 tundra I’ll be able to do so without worry.

The old inline 6's Toyota put in the LC 80's had head gasket issues.
The 3.5l v6 (tacoma and plenty of crossovers) can have oiling issues on steep inclines.
Even the venerable 4.7l v8 (LC 100, 4th gen 4runner, previous gen Tundra) had timing belt and water pump issues.

No engine is perfect, even those designed & made by Toyota. But Toyota's engines do tend to last longer, even with those known issues in mind. I've yet to hear about a Tundra owner getting stranded because of leaking cam towers on the 5.7l v8....whereas I've heard of plenty of F-150, Silverado and Ram 1500 owners getting stranded because of hard powertrain malfunctions.

So yeah...we shouldn't place Toyota on a pedestal as if it can do no foul....but we also shouldn't be so naive as to think that other OEM's emphasize QDR in the same manner that Toyota does.
