Had a friend suggest that perhaps the Nissan Titan was a better bang for my buck. On resale potential alone, I didn't consider them and am happy with sticking to a more proven platform (imo) that consistently seems to have better resale potential. Nissan has different trim levels, of course, but overall they seem more cheaply made.

But what do I know, I'm new to truck ownership. Last "truck" was a Mercedes ML320 built in Tuscaloosa, AL. It's classified as a truck because of the boxed frame it sits on. Despite that, the body and interior are cheaply constructed. Mechanically, it's pretty reliable. Not the best, not the worst. Body resistance to rust is not good.

Here's hoping that my new Tundra will be far better than both.

If I was willing to own a black truck, I would actually buy that BR truck over the black all day every day and twice on Sundays. When I bought my TRD Sport, they had identical trucks...Super White and BR. Living in San Antonio and not having a garage for the truck, SW was the only choice really. But yeah, the BR is a fantastic color...probably my favorite.

Does BR fade that easily? I live in Iowa; paint fade results may vary.

Not sure. I am more concerned about heat. My black tonneau cover gets so hot that you cannot touch it for more than a few seconds. Would consider taking it off..but the Berliner is black. Really thinking about painting it white since it is a hard trip-fold with aluminum panels. The panels have an obvious texture so I think I could actually do it with rattle cans. Of course the "frames" around the panels are some type of plastic/rubber/vinyl material so probably have to leave them black. Wonder how that might look...

The "Stormtrooper look", white body, black stripes. :) With a white Tundra, it just might work. Any white Raptor liner and masking tape/paper in your future?

Nissan Titan?!?!?! Zero F-ing chance. Never again in my life will I buy a Nissan product. And this is after owning a Titan. Replaced literally every major component (axle seals, front differential, rear differential, transmission, abs booster three times). Thank god they were almost all done under warranty but that thing spent more time in the shop than on the road.

You might be surprised at how little Tundra bashing there is on the other forums . Most agree that the Tundra is more reliable but they needed the higher payload of whatever truck they ended up with .

Take a look at other manufacturers forums and you’ll see lots of post of “how to fix this” or “my truck is back in the shop” or “had to call a tow”

Come here and the most popular posts are mpgs, what oil should I use, and how big of tires can I fit. Point being you don’t see many people complaining on this forum about something breaking or being left stranded. That’s the difference between Toyota and other brands

Truth be told, you got the best color…. I went thru the same thought process. You were smart to play it out here. Before my Tundra, it was a Titan Cummins. Sitting with a check engine light on for 3 months that the dealership couldn’t fix was a warning sign and I bailed on that idea. Luckily I didn’t lose any money. My wife will tell you we went all in on Toyota because of reliability and resale. I think it was just the least compromise. Plus we live in the woods but need to park in NYC some times.

Agreed... sometimes I daydream about what a Cummins would have been like in the Toyota instead...

You probably got more answers that you can deal with and I'm late to respond. Here is what I did I looked through the owners reviews on Edmunds which gets a lot of traffic so therefore has a pretty large sample size. In anycase the Tundra killed the others when it comes to the percentage of reviews higher than a 3 out of 5. For 2020 90% of Tundra reviews on Edmunds are 4 and 5, for the 2020 F150 its 79% thats just 2020 as an example.

    Basically I'm on the fence.
Wait for a 2022 or pull the trigger on one of the last 2021's allotted to the local dealers as I've been told as of last week or 2 weeks ago depending on the dealership the last 2021 Tundra's are rolling off the assembly line.

HOPEFULLY the reliability will stay high although anyone that has both owned and worked on vehicles know that a more complicated system will require more maintenance and have a few more issues as parts age and wear.

The next truck will hopefully last until I retire (about 10 yrs) and why I'm on the fence as the current Tundra has proven it could very well outlast me...

Having personally owned a 2017 F150 3.5 with max tow and a 2nd gen 3.5 I think you made a good decision based on my experience(see below).
Sure the Ford has a few more features but they come at a cost and for me it wasn't longevity.
The 2020 and up Tundra has some pretty cool features and is proven more or less.

If the tow capacity and more importantly in my mind payload meet the requirements I feel the a Tundra cant be beat as I know folks who own and have many years and 1000's of trouble free miles.

I just traded in my 2017 F150 3.5 for a Tacoma not long ago and am now looking at a Tundra due to the cabin space, comfort, and towing capacity. Unfortunately a heavy tow comes with a heaver tongue weight and it isn't where the Tundra shines.

I can say without reservation the 2nd gen 3.5 Ecoboost has cam phaser issues that Ford has yet to figure out. Talked to countless Ford technicians and they all told me the same thing...The VCT issue hasn't been ironed out and get out of the 3.5 before the warranty period expires. Two top end rebuilds in less than 41,000 KM's. New intake and exhaust VCT's, timing chains, VCT solenoids, and timing chain adjusters the last time it was in the shop. The issue is beginning to show on the 5.0 as well. From the research I've done and talking to owners, mechanics, and several years on F150.com sharing documented information and not hearsay I've given up on the F150 and Ford.

They they perform very well and look great on paper but a person better invest in extended warranty. If I was to go back to Ford it would be the 2.7 Eco as this motor has seen the least issues although is the most stressed of the bunch(other than oil pan leaks).
My brother is a mechanic as are many of my co-workers and friends. I've been maintaining and operating cars, boats, quads, bikes, commercial marine, some heavy equipment, etc.
Using top grade synthetics, factory replacement consumables, and doing maintenance intervals before what the factory recommends should have kept the Ford happy... unfortunately none of this can make up for shitty engineering. Like frozen door latches...come on Ford. After how many years of building trucks they decide to screw up the most basic of mechanical linkages...WTF?

    Decisions

I traded my '18 for a '21 figuring I wasn't going to like the next gen. And at a minimum, I wouldn't want one of the first years of a new gen.

Even if you go for a '21 and then later decide you like the next gen, your '21 will likely still be worth plenty. There are many who will prefer the old gen no matter what. People still look for low mileage 2015 and below Tacomas.

I'll have to agree with you there.
The only available units were Crewmax Off-road Premium in Cement which were the style I'm after although was hoping for MGM.

I just watched a underhood/undercarriage review of the new F150 3.5 egoboost and holy shit is that engine bay terrifyingly complex to look at. I'm considering getting a new truck because I just can't get comfortable in my Tundra, but I'm heavily debating waiting until we get details about the 2022 Tundra. Still going to do the research and test drives of at least Ford and GM again.

I'm with you on the weak payload/towing numbers. This 5.7 powertrain is way more than up to the task of pulling my car hauler, but the suspension sag is unreal as the Tundras do not shine with higher tongue weights. I just wish I didn't have to put myself at risk in a crash by attempting to modify seat height and steering wheel position to get comfortable driving this thing, else I'd invest in a WDH, etc. Reliability is all well and good, but what if you hate driving the damn thing?

I was on the fence '21 v '22 and just decided to go for the '21 based on resale & build-quality reputation. Haven't driven a lot of different trucks, but I just couldn't wait any longer for a pickup based on the home projects I need to complete.

If I love the 4th gen, I'll trade for it in a year or three. In the meantime, I'll have a solid 3G truck...when it's delivered to the dealer in the next 3 weeks.

May not be a bad plan.
I've had a couple dealers offer me close to full MSRP on my '21 Taco.

    I believe that's not "4 out of 5" but rather "4 and 5". So 90% of Tundra reviewers gave it a 4 or a 5, whereas 79% of F150 reviewers gave it a 4 or a 5.

    I said 90% of all the reviews were either a 4 or a 5 not 4 out of 5.

I was actually in the same boat as you. I have a 2020 white platinum but was always tempted to get an f150. Some notable things I liked on the f150 the tundra didn't have were all the electrical outlets you get (esp the inverter in the truck bed), tailgate with the ruler markings and integrated step handle, and the interior with the bigger screen, nicer leather, and center console that folds flat.

With that being said, the price of the f150 (~65k) would've been way more expensive than the tundra(~55k). I think you've made the right decision purchasing the 4x4 tundra. I especially like the barcelona red you've selected. I wish I had that color. The resale value of the tundra will give you flexibility if you change your mind down the road. If you decide to purchase a Gen 4, you'll probably get the most bang for your buck with the Tundra as opposed to an f150. If you decide to keep the Gen 3, you have purchased the last year of a tried and true truck. Most of the issues should've been ironed out.

Can't wait to see you post pictures of your new baby when it arrives!

The Tundra looks awesome in Barcelona Red! After 40 years of mainly black, white and silver vehicles I decided a change was in order. I regularly receive positive comments about the color. My wife was less than thrilled when I told her I was buying a red truck. She is now a fan....! Congrats on the new ride!

Overwhelmed by the love for Barcelona Red. It wasn't even my first choice, though I like it. I haven't even seen it in person yet on a Tundra. Luck of the draw – it's what's been most recently allocated to my dealership. I think I'll love it. Gonna be a sweet "dad truck". For the coolness factor, it's gonna be referred to as Barcelona Red Metallica. :headbang::muscleflexing:
