I’m buying my first Tundra after owning my Ram 3500 for 17 years and after looking at used and finding the price of brand new to be close enough to justify brand new I decided to go that route as this will probably be my last truck.Hearing so many rumors bad and good about the 22’s I was just looking for some help in choosing and maybe someone else is in the same boat and might chime in.Looking at ordering a double cab TRD 6.5 bed in magnetic gray. Thanks in advance.

How important is the V8 to you? All the rumors are pointing to no V8 in next gen. I have a 20 that I'm leasing for 3 years so i can wait and see what the next gen looks like. If I don't like it then I'm keeping my 20. If it's amazing I'll be done with lease March 2023 and can get new one after they have had 1 year of production.

    - Proven technology
    - Big V8, reliable AF
    - Relatively low payload
    - Relatively heavy

    2022
    - Likely lighter, should have better payload
    - Likely more powerful engine, albeit smaller
    - Likely more emissions crap with said engine (eg. start/stop)
    - Surely better MPG

I just bought a 2021, decided I didn't want to wait. Maybe I'll have envy when the new ones arrive. No matter what you pick, there is always something better/newer around the corner.

What do you do with your Ram? A 3500 to a half ton Tundra is a big change.

As a Toyota truck owner for almost 20 years, I would wait a few months to at least see the next gen before making a decision.

I see no reason not to wait. The next gen may blow the previous gens out of the water (which I believe it will). If you don’t think so you’ll be able to find a previous gen either new or used. There will be plenty of used ones on the market.
To me, the V8 isn’t that big of a deal. If technology allows a different power train to achieve better MPG, more horsepower and more torque while still being reliable then what is the disadvantage?

I agree. The 5.7L has been great but I think Toyota will surprise a few folks like they did in 07.

Wait and see. Then everyone here selling their trucks with mods for a 2022 will give you a great deal on a used truck that’s already awesome. Or, if the 2022 is that amazing for your needs and wants get it instead. Either way you win.

Wait. You may want a 2022 or if the 2022s are really that much better, there will be some nice, low mileage used tundras to pick from trade ins. Either way, think waiting is best.

The used market will eventually stabilize too once Covid is in the rear view mirror and production kicks it up a notch. Gas prices are going up and although pickups are selling like hotcakes the last few years, high fuel costs will turn away some folks.

That change worries me more than the question of waiting for the next gen. A 3500 serves a purpose the Tundra is unlikely to ever duplicate.

Yep, the OP has a reason for that 3500 I'm assuming.

I would definitely wait if I knew the v-8 would still be available but it sounds unlikely and a v-6 in a full size truck does not appeal to me at all.The guy at the dealership I talked to said that he thought it was going to be built more for “asphalt warriors”which does not sound good to me.I love my Dodge but don’t need a one ton anymore and my wife won’t let me have two trucks it I’m pretty sure I’ll regret selling it one day because 6 speed diesels will be impossible to find.Really just want a truck I know will last and be super reliable.

Most guys at the dealership have no clue. Toyota is very good about keeping things under wraps. They were in 07. Lots of scuttle butt out there.

Thanks for all the suggestions,I’m gonna wait to see what the 22 looks like nothing to lose and a lot to gain either way it seems.I’m just glad patience comes with age.

If you want the new 22, wait for the 23. No one gets anything right the first time. You could get lucky and have no issues, but if it was me I'd have all the odd ball problems occured to me if I got the 22 lol

Either way, it's a Toyota and if you like what they are offering, go for it

Gonna need a truck sooner than that for sure so it’ll have to be a 22 or a 21.Really hope they still offer the 5.7 but from the sounds of it not likely.

Check the build link in my signature.
I also wouldn’t be surprised to see a considerable increase in sticker price on the ‘22 as well, especially on higher trims or with any options and given the fact they’ll likely be pushing a lot of features in their attempt to play catch up.

As others have said, I wouldn’t buy first year of a new Gen - let someone else be the production-model tester. I went for a 21 when I knew the 22 was going to be the “next gen” because I had almost 300k mostly trouble free miles on a 2008 with the same fundamental power train, frame, and many other parts. It still drove like when I bought it, but I decided to jump on the last year of the current Gen to (hopefully) see another 300k and 12 years before I have to start thinking about a replacement.

Really hard to argue with that logic.I’ve drove quite a few used ones in the last month and really loved the truck and they are great looking rigs even for being “dated”.I am also concerned about a big price jump.

I’m about numbers when buying vehicles. I have a deposit down on my Luna rock 2021 pro sometime to come in end of April. I will not buy the first 3 years that just me. I have nothing to loose with having my deposit down. I’m getting almost what I paid for my 2020 AG 4runner Pro. The value is crazy on the 4runner pros and the tundra pros. So even if I buy this which I plan down the road if the new Toyota Tundra is better I will still get top dollar for my tundra pro. I’m not forced to move up to the 2021. It may work out for me by the time I see mine there might be more news out on the new tundra. A lot of times old school vehicles are better to stay with than jumping into all this tech stuff. More issues and problems to go wrong.

I would say buy a 21. Let the 22 come out, get any kinks worked out and possibly buy a 23 or 24 if you really like the new style. By that time you will have a full range of available modifications also.

These trucks hold value well, as you know from shopping around.

Having been burned buying a new redesigned Honda a few years back, I would say buy a 2021 and keep it for a few years until all the bugs in the 2022 get worked out. I bought a redesigned (new engine design as well) Honda CRV within the first year it was released, and it had a really terrible vibrating engine harmonic that they could not fix, which is why they ended up having to redesign it again a year or two later resulting in oil leaking into the gas in the next model they produced (probably because it was rushed). They got sued in a class action, but it didn't matter, they knew of the problem and continued to sell them until the redesign! I traded it in 6 months after I bought it (went right back to Toyotas) and never again will I buy the first year of a new vehicle without reading multiple reviews and waiting at least a year or two for the bugs to get worked out. Had I read the reviews on the CRV, I would have known about the issue BEFORE signing on the dotted line.

Anyway, sorry for my long story and lesson on not buying a newly designed vehicle. I do have more faith that Toyota will not do what Honda did, and will only release a new vehicle once it has been correctly engineered, but one never knows. I would also maybe wait and see what it looks like and what the details are once they reveal it. I heard the reveal was going to be this year at the Chicago Auto show, but the show has been put on hold from what I understand. It will be several years before we can really judge the reliability of the new engine...

Good luck with whatever choice you make...

I would wait. There will still be a good amount of 21's on the lot when the 22 is announced, and you can make the best decision for yourself knowing about both models at that time.

Wow thank everyone on here for the help,I belong to the Cummins forum as well but rarely asked a question because it almost always devolved into a bunch of arguing or “my truck is better than yours” stuff.I really do agree it’s risky buying the first year of a new vehicle for sure so I might just go ahead and order a 21 and drive it a few years and if the 3rd gens are all that pull the trigger on one of them at that time which was unthinkable to me buying two new trucks because I never thought I’d buy one new but after looking at used a new one seems like the easy choice.Looking at ordering a TRD with a few upgrades and doing a 3-2 leveling kit.Not sure about the audio option levels though. Thanks again to everyone.

Buy the 21. They are great trucks. If you decide to sell in a few years, the resale value can’t be beat. You will probably end up driving the 21 for years
