Thought I wanted a 2018 with the TSS until my wife got a new Honda Pilot with Honda Sensing (Honda version of TSS) and realized I didn't like the features. I ended up with 2017

Just got a call from the dealership, they said that with the help of a special Toyota hotline they were able to figure out that one of the Oil Control Valves went bad. They said this controls timing and other engine features and is what caused all the error codes. I asked why this would set off a Pre Collision System malfunction. They said it will set off all kinds of codes. They said when they examined the old part it had gasket material in it and they think this is what caused it to fail. I’m not sure if I’m buying it but hopefully it’s fixed. So they are ordering it and I can pick it up tomorrow after noon.

Gasket material in it? That's worrisome. They going to get into the engine to see where it came from?

Who knows, they didn’t seem to think it was a big issue, I asked them to check the oil pan, who knows if they will

I'm not disputing that they found a part that was fouled with gasket material, just that it should have nothing to do with the TSS.I wonder if they might have done some type of re-calibration and kept it quiet.

These engines are loaded with silicone gasket material during/after assembly. I sent in an oil sample to Blackstone Labs at 5K miles, and their analysis showed extremely high levels of silicone. Machines apply the silicone beads on mating surfaces and where does the over flow go? Into your oil and sensors. With a few oil changes the silicone levels dropped according to Blackstone. The days of cork gaskets are gone.

I wanna keep everyone updated in case this happens to someone else. I just called the Toyota dealership service to see what time to pick up my tundra and the service person said that they changed the Oil Control Valve and they got the codes again, so he said that they wanna check some filter under the valve cover. So still not fixed and told me they would call me tomorrow with an update.

Update, I got the truck back last night. So far on the ride home no problems, they said it was an oil control valve issue. Code was p0011. So after changing the OCV they stil had the issue. They then opened the valve cover and saw that the OCV cover gasket was not installed probperly and this is what cause the valve failure and is now not allow the new valve to build pressure. After replacing the gasket and reinstalling the valve cover and new OCV the tech accidentally broke the cam position sensor wire harnes. So they then had to get a harness and splice it into the truck, which looks like complete crap and I no doubt some day will have issues it’s it. Then after everything was back together and repaired and a fresh oil change they still had same issues. Finally they said the issue was the truck needed to build pressure with the new part and it was fine. They drove the truck like 40 miles before giving it back. I have driven it like 50 more and so far it’s good. This entire experience has really make me rethink this dealership. We shall see how this fix works as next week I’m driving 600 miles each way for vacation.

Wow.... that's all i Have. Totally unexceptable IMO. It didn't come in with hacked up wiring so it shouldn't leave with one.

My guess is that they couldn’t get that covered by Toyota since the dealer broke it.

How many miles on your truck? I’d tell them they are the proud owner of your truck. Ask when your new one is coming in.

Curious as to the miles as well. That engine bay pic doesn’t look like it should be of a 2018.....

Not sure I would be too happy either with that roll of electrical tape wrapped around the wires on a new vehicle. Could they not at least put back on the stock loom? or is that under all the tape.

Could someone with a 18 take a picture of the same area to compare. My 17 is almost 2 years old and the wiring doesn't look that butchered or raggady. I would raise a stink to get a proper wire harness installed. You are right, you WILL have problems later on with it. These computer systems in the trucks measure all kinds of voltage to make adjustments and they are very small volt changes. Introducing the extra resistance for a poor splice job is just asking for more issues.

My truck is a 2018 4.6 CM, bought it in early May and it has 4700 miles on it. Could someone post a pic of there engine in this location I’m curious to see what it should look like. I complained to Toyota today and emailed the head of the dealer service as well as the president of the dealership group. Awaiting there response.

Well, the top guy from the service Dept contacted me back and stated that the harness should have been replaced. He has assigned the manager to look into why it was not replaced and stated that they are going to make things right. The harness is being ordered and they are going to call me to set everything up. Hopefully this is a positive experience and all is repaired correctly.

Would have been fine if they would have told you they broke it and did a temp fix to keep you on the road while a new harness was ordered. But sounds like they were trying to be slick and got caught

Want to make sure I understand something... So, it ended up having nothing to do with TSS, right? It all came down to the failed Oil Control Valve - which sent pretty much everything into lala-land?

    Thanks,

I got the impression the initial problems caused a "cascade electronic event" too. You guys can coin that if you wish. Lol
More common than you think. We naturally fill in the blanks sometimes assuming the trucks traction alert, TSS, etc have a specific cause and effect, but given his situation and the way all these computers communicate, I'd accept the systems were dropping off.
I totally understand the harness replacement. It's a tough road. Toyota wants a certain image and one mechanic and a shortcut can easily ruin a reputation. Hell.. How many of us bitch and howl about the lube techs.
The production issue was a fluke. Service stumbled and later made it right. OP should have had a demo truck, should have had a service managers apology, and maybe a few complimentary oil changes after the freebies are used up, to instill a relationship of trust and familiarity.
Glad it ended well. That engine will run forever. How was the trip? How did the truck run?

Correct, nothing to do with TSS. The Oil Control Valve and cover gasket were the issue.

Leaving this coming week, will report back. They assigned this situation to their manager and he’s has promised me they would make this right and ensure I’m comfortable with the repair and confident in my truck. I pretty happy the way they responded to this and have delayed the rapair to when I get back.
