I can’t pass up a good oil thread. They’re just so entertaining.

My truck is a 24 model with an 8/23 build date. It’s got 29K miles with no problems, but every time I head out, I know in my gut that today could be the day.

In the spirit of staying on topic, I did my first oil change at 1,020 miles.

Isn't third gen ownership fun? That said, I'm making a decision not to worry about it and enjoy the truck. There is little I can do about it. If a monster piece of swarf is going to let go from its hiding place and destroy the bearings, I just hope I'm not out camping somewhere hours from home with the trailer.

I'll keep mine in warranty and do 5k oil changes, the rest is fate.

I changed my oil at 100 miles, it smelled like straight fuel, and (ofc) had some metallic flake to it.

I was VERY surprised at the filter size. Our Honda Accord has a bigger filter.

I plan on changing it again at 1k miles, then at 10k.

Yes, it is a baby oil filter. I drive an old scion tC as my commuter and it has a slightly larger filter.

Ah good catch. I misspoke, my plan is 100, 1k, 5k, then 10k.

I have about 300 miles on the odometer atm

On my last three Tundras I have just gone with the Toyota maintenance intervals at the dealership maintenance and never had a single problem. Yes, all three did not have their first change until 10k.

i understand the logic of early break in oil changes, but it's actually based more on superstition than logic. modern engines absolutely do not need a sub 1k oil change and they are actually designed to take advantage of the gritty oil to help the piston rings set during a break in. Otherwise, there is the potential for excess oil burn-off/higher oil consumption for the life of the engine. May seem counterintuitive, but you don't want it too clean during break in. Especially since these vehicles are specced for 0w20 oil.

the 10k oil change interval is heavily influence by environmental standards, and while modern engines and oils are capable of 10k intervals, it can (and probably will with a turbocharged engine) decrease the lifespan of the engine in the long term. The life of the engine as concerned by vehicle manufacturers is the life of the warranty.

rule of thumb is every 5k for most modern engines. Severe use, towing/hauling, should be changed more often. you should rotate your tires every 5k so you may as well change the oil while you have the vehicle up on stands.

This is the guy to listen to when it comes to motor/drivetrain oil.

I used to think engines were broken in or at least ran on an engine dyno for a few minutes....right? Not even close.

Before I retired, the company hired an engine mechanical engineer from Cummins and boy did he set me straight on a lot of industry standard. One in fifty are dyno tested.

One of the things this guy says (at about 5:45) is the absolute key to all of this, and that's 'OBJECTIVES'... and more specifically it's that we (consumers) have different objectives than the manufacturers and the dealers... This is why the 'advice' given within the owner's manuals, by the dealers, and mechanics within Toyota and other establishments may not be giving us the best recommendations to meet OUR objectives. I will say that I've had interaction w/some Toyota dealership folks who will provide advice on maintenance, etc. over the years who were more in line with my objectives. However, they are far and few between, and they put themselves at risk for going 'off script' when not following recommendations they were taught in training or the recommendations of the owner's or service manuals!!!

Great video, and 1000% confirms what many of us believed to be true and the reason why I follow break-in procedures any time I purchase a new vehicle and why I am so damn anal about not wanting a 'new' vehicle that's got 20, 30, 50, or 100 miles of 'test drives' on it.

    Excellent video!!!!

You gave us all heart attacks.

I'll do 5k....letting the dealer do the 10k and 20k changes. I will check for no skid plate bolts missing, new filter and oil level.

Got an ok deal on 16qt of full-synth 0W-20. Got the 15mm drain tube for the filter, and a Fumoto Valve going on during this first oil change. So it'll be the break in around 1,500, then probably another 2-2500 in. Digress to the my originating post, my haunches and history have always broken in motors with early oil changes. Maybe technology and better quality control overall makes it less likely to have significant break in wear, but the "cheap insurance" mentality reigns supreme in my mind.

Having had a 5.7, I mean, sure...it was great. I was also a die-hard fan of the Jeep/Mopar I-6, the 2-bolt Chevy 327, and the 454. Truly entertaining to watch keyboard specialists do their thing (regardless the subject tbh).

He is changing his oil using the expotential program technique. After 10K, he will switch to 100K OCI.

    Too many, but not enough....
I don't have a 3rd gen but the principle applies to any car. On my 2.5 gen and corolla hybrid I changed the oil at 500 miles, then again at 1000 miles for break in and there absolutely was alot of metal in there. I believe I did another oil change around 3000 ish miles because I hit the 6 month mark which is always when I do oil changes regardless of miles since I don't drive alot.

that would be SUBO, the worst poster on this forum and the worst poster I have seen in the history of forums.

I have owned 100s of cars and belonged to 100s of message forums. Your posts are baseless senseless nonsense and everyone on this forum who owns a 3rd gen is worse off for them. Nothing insightful is gained from them and the resulting mayhem results in 3rd gen owners pulling their hair out by the roots.

In the ending everyone is left feeling stupid and resentful; along with you probably do not even own a truck or a Toyota or a Tacoma or Tundra, but rather live in a basement under a rock while playing video games, and driving a 20-year-old Camry or Corolla with 250 thousand miles.

beyond that oil filter size doesn't really mean much, it has to do with surface area and by-pass pressure. Once the filter reaches bypass pressure it doesn't filter and is basically useless.

My break-in period is doing a burnout right at the dealer lot, then hitting the highway to see what speed the governor kicks in. Change oil at 10K because the manual. I heard that it helps with the piston rings by disintegrating all of the metal shavings at 8,000RPM.

as they do on all forums, Oil threads are vastly divisive since everyone has an opinion and thinks their way is best. I would say just go with what you like. Toyota oil is good, from my understanding it is Mobile 1 as an OEM supplier built to Toyota specs.

I use the dealership for oil changes on it since I do not want them to deny any warranty work related to my truck.

It is a little more sure but it ensures that they have a record of the service.
