Picked up a brand new platinum the week before last just before I had to go out of town for the week. Drove 5 mins from the dealer to pickup a kid and noticed a long thin panel on the rear passenger door is loose and on its way to falling off. See photos:

Was pressed on time and omw out of town but let the dealer know and they assured me that we can work out fix when I return. Seems like a easy QC issue that can be trivially fixed.

Chatted with them while I was gone and they propose I drive 45 min to drop the truck for an indefelinte period of time and go home with a loaner car. Dealer much closer said to bring it in and see what they think they can do, but that they should be able to fix

Question: is it worth the trouble or is this just a gorilla glue job ? It looks as if it was originally attached with adhesive and no nuts or bolts. It's beginning to loosen more and will probably begin scratching paint while it wrattles.

If they're offering to potentially fix it, I would take them up on that offer and load up some miles on a loaner. But can gorilla glue do the job? Probably. Though, personally, I wouldn't want that to be my solution after paying ~70k.

Common problem on Platinum trim. Dealer can fix it, but it will probably happen again. Issue is the black plastic expands in heat causing the adhesive to fail. Many of us (myself included) simply remove the trim altogether. I like the cleaner look.

Others have had the trim expand to the point where it intrudes on the opening/closing of the front doors and it snaps the end off.

A little searching will yield numerous threads on this topic.

Amazing to me Toyota has not implemented a solution to this failure.

Let them fix it. My 22 Platinum did the same thing 2yrs ago...doing it again as of a few months ago.

I would NOT gorilla glue it. Let the dealer fix it under warranty. God forbid you do something that they then say later caused the issue and deny a warranty claim….like a paint issue. Or remove the piece of trim entirely.

What I would do (and did after I swapped my 1794 badges into black oem platinum trim)

get the new pieces from toyota, but don’t have them install them. Have them remove the existing ones on the truck and clean/ prep the area.

Get on Amazon and buy a big thick roll of VHB tape by 3m and do the entire emblem in one run per section, cut it right on the edges. Heat the truck up and heat the VHB up and stick them on- mine never came off after doing that

I second not using gorilla glue. At least not the stuff I have. Says right on the bottle that it expands. Of course I used it before reading that and it was a mess.....

Well over $60k with glued on exterior trim pieces on a truck, that fall off??? Apparently Toyota Engineers expect these to be always garaged and never see any work, parking lots, car washes, etc.

That is disappointing and sorry for you to have to bother taking back. Please let us know if the solution is a permanent one, not just to make it last past the basic warranty.

Thanks for replies and link to main thread--didnt have good luck choosing search terms that would have landed me there.

Today I noticed the front platinum badge on the other side of the truck has also started to separate. Brought it to the closet dealer and have an appt next week. Hopefully it's a quick one.
