Was just looking at the ‘22s for grins and giggles. Just can’t get over no V8 being made available.

I'm now a proud 2.5 gen 17' owner as I have been for over 20 Toyotas and over 2 million miles of driving in 35+ years, including 3 Gen 1's and a 2.5 gen Tundra. When the 4.7 V8 came out it was an incredible milestone of change as there had never been a V8 in a Yota from the factory. It impressed out of the gate but still went through different improvements (vvti in 05-06) to eventually become an indestructible, million mile motor.
Years later, the gen 2 released the infamous Space Shuttle reveal for the new Big 5.7 V8. That was , and to this day is amongst the best and biggest F-U to the rest of the competition... It stuck in everyone's head as a dominant truck.... Before they even drove it.

Now, 14 years later we are eager to see what change has brought us...
What did we get so far.
Well, I only remember seeing some stupid shadow, quick blur of nothing for what seemed like years, (21 was supposed to be the release year) then promises and retracted release dates. We were teased and tormented but we still believed there was going to be a new gen Tundra towing a skyscraper or some definitively out-of-this-world impression that would again, leave the comp in the dust. But what we got was not what we expected. We want it to be everything and more, but Toyota dropped the ball this round and we are inherently disappointed. The new 22 truck doesn't suck at all!!! It's just not what a seasoned Yota guy wants to see as what comes next.
I'm all for change, but I'm also a creature of habit and above all I want to love what I drive. I LOVE driving my supercharged V8 Yota. It doesn't mean I hate the 22. It just has not even broke par with comparison to previous gens. I get 19mph with 550hp 550 torque and if I had to tow the Space Shuttle, I could. But what's the actual point of the 22? Toyota always strips down the first year releases so they can trickle the upgrades for the next 7years. The 2029 gen 3 will be what we want now but we can't have it. So we get a mild improvement in infotainment, less of some things, more of others, but basically, not any Thunder!
I like the 22, I hate the 22, I don't care about the 22 because it's premature and not really ready to get in the ring.

Give Toyota a few years and then we'll see what is really the future of trucks. What we don't realize is all this gassy turbo, hybrid stuff is soon going to be obsolete and we'll be laughing at the days when we "only" had 550hp. Lol

Agreed. I was literally ready to pull the trigger on trading in my barely broke in cherry 2010 with 112k miles. Then I saw what it looked like and gave up on that idea immediately. Waiting for gen 3.5 with some serious esthetics revamping.

Mechanical issues aside, it would take at least $10k in aftermarket parts just to make the 2022 moderately acceptable to look at on a daily basis.

As is off the lot it's an eyesore, something like this would be the bare minimum...

The embarrassing part is what many consider positive reviews is the host stating something like, "Even though the grill takes a bit of getting used to the rest of the truck is.................", or "Although Toyota hasn't broken any new ground with this truck compared to the big 3 it has some improvement over...............". Not exactly complements. And if the hybrid mpg numbers were seeing are accurate then this truck is in trouble. Good news is someone out there is already figuring a way to move the new Sequoia grill to the Tundra for about $8000.

I'll be saving up for the next gen Sequoia, as the TRD Pro trim looks so much better than any Gen 3 tundra. I figure in about 4-5 years, a lot of the kinks will be worked out. It'll be a good midlife crisis present to myself when I turn 40 lol.

Agreed. The design language of the current 4Runner is what was brought over the the Tundra, and it has been polarizing to say the least. Not sure what direction they'll go with the new 4Runner. I imagine the big grille that has been so offensive will carry over due to the cooling requirements, so I expect to the lamentations of their women and the gnashing of teeth will continue.

you could potentially own the last gen 2.5 truck ever made! Price goes up for that.

Right! The thought crossed my mind, if not one of the last very few. I had a 2018, but came out ahead with no msrp mark up, great trade value, and no previous owners. win-win-win.

Edit: wonder how I could find out how close it was to the end.

Not sure how such small changes can have such a massive difference.

Front bumper "appears" to be 1-piece by design for the '23 sequoia, but still 2 pieces. The Tundra has multiple hard angles with large surface areas that make it appear out of place and multiple pieces slapped together. The sequoia has a much better (perfected) appearance by design with softer angles. If I were a betting man, you may see that incorporated on future tundras. That angle and picture of the Tundra doesn't do it total justice either.

If the grill were six inches less vertical measurement it would be a good looking truck. It just doesn’t have the proportionality of the tacoma/4runner. Major miss by the design team

The build date is on the door jam sticker, should have month and year near the VIN. I think you can decode the year with the VIN as well.

I really wasn’t planning on get’n a new truck but when I saw the 22s and it only having a 6 I started my search for the last of the V8s.

Very happy with my new truck!

Whatever this forum told me to do
I reckon I timed this fairly well...buy luck.

I get a new every 10yrs or so. My 20' should do just fine.

We'll see what the landscape looks like then.

So true. Especially when they have to take the body off the frame or remove the engine. NOT a little glitch to work out but instead a major repair.

I have never bought a first year model and never will. I wanted the last year with the V8. Not going anywhere especially its paid for. Just like my 19 C7 Z06 last of the manual. Want no parts of the C8. Especially I have no payments on the Vette either.

I am just so happy I returned the 21’ had for a 4 day test drive and was 90 % going to purchase.. it was ok but problem is I got an early taste of the 22’ and just no way could justify the 21’. Really liked the ride, power, tech and about everything else more. Dodge that oone luckily.

Gotta be honest….this is very tempting to me as a ‘21 owner. I really like being the whole maintenance history on my truck…but is that worth the extra $$$ I’d get if I sold and bought a well-cared-for, high mileage 2nd gen?

Nobody ever likes the looks of any new truck model at first. It’s like clockwork. New truck photos are released and then every truck message board blows up with predictable “it looks like a [insert brand] had a baby with a [insert brand].” Then after a year the looks are accepted and approved.

I just wouldn’t buy a brand new model of any brand that features drastic changes. Ford had major ecoboost problems at first and I’m sure Toyota will have some kinks. But in two years I wouldn’t hesitate to buy one and we’ll all fall in love with the added power of the turbos.
