Hey guys. Trying to figure out a new prop for my Honda 9.9 on a 15’ Smokercraft Alaskan. Currently has a 3 blade 9 1/4 x 8 stock aluminum. Boat moves plenty fast for a 9.9. However, it takes a little work for it to plane with my family on board.
    - will a stainless steel of same size help with the “hole shot”? I don’t want to lose any speed, and I don’t want to make the problem worse.
    - will a stainless of the same size give a little more speed but do nothing with hole shot?
    -other opinions?

    Thx.

I don't think a ss prop will help. That's more for big hp motors. I don't think the prop on a 9.9 is spinning fast enough to cause flexing in a aluminum prop. A 4 blade will give you a better hole shot but you will lose top end. If you go with a prop with to much higher pitch you could lose rpm witch means less speed. I'm not positive about the Honda but other outboard brands have several different hp ranges on the same platform. For instance I just took shipment ofa new suzuki 20hp today. This motor is the same platform as the Suzuki 9.9hp and the 15hp. There is just a few parts that are different. Computer, intake etc. You might get more bang for you buck if you can bump up the hp. This would require some research on your motor and year.

Yeah I looked into that a while back and I believe the bf8/9 are same displacement but bf15 has bigger displacement. Mine is a 2014… I think there is a misconception with the Honda’s that the throttle is governed to hold back 5hp… but with different cylinder size your not going to make them the same. Don’t remember the details but it wasn’t cost effective.

I may end up using this motor for a sailboat and finding a good used 20hp for the smokercraft… 15 would be an improvement but I think a 20-25 would be good, especially if it was a lighter Yamaha.

A boating thread on Tundras.com. Trucks and boats, what could be better!

Been boating all my life. On the water is always the best place.
The current boat is an Alumacraft 18.5’ bass boat with a 115 Yamaha. Stable, pretty fast, fishes well and also pulls the kids well kneeboarding or tubing. Pictures are from Kerr Lake in NC, camping at one of the state parks with family. I was actually able to launch the boat at the campsite on the sand. Didn’t even need the boat ramp!

    Here’s a quick question for y’all;
I am looking for a long shaft 4stroke trolling motor, around 8-10hp. A new Honda would be about $2,400.00. I hope to find a decent used one for 1/2 that.
I live up in the upper nw corner of Oregon. If you have any good leads, please pm me

I have myself a 1974 Sears GameFisher powered by a 1986 Johnson 15hp e-start and a Minn Kota Terrova.. Awesome little local lake hopper.

The Terrova was put on recently and I've only been able to go fishing twice since the new install :annoyed:

    Congrats on your sale.

Yup, it’s a sellers market. I sold my 30 year old Large boat for nearly what I paid for it 8 years ago.

Sellers market is a huge understatement, I sold my 91 Rinker cuddy for $10k. I purchased it for $6600 in 2017. Not bad for 5 years of boating.

I wish! My boat was winterized and wraped mid October. Can't wait to get back out. Won't unwrap till the end of march.

Do you ice fish? At least you have that. NJ winters are the worst. Cold no snow and not enough ice so you can't do anything but wait for spring.

Man, this Covid crazy and boat prices are out of control. Just got an email from the boat dealer I bought my boat from in ‘19 saying they just got a shipment in. The exact same boat I purchased is now 22% higher price with a smaller motor. Crazy!

Failed to mention if 2stroke or 4stroke, if you change out definetly go to 2stroke I have mariner9.9 2 stroke , went to trade for 25 hp 4stroke , dealer said no , the 2 stroke had same power as the 4 strokes, so if going up in hp make it 2 stroke.
